What's the difference between "Violent" vs "Hyperviolent"?

We even have a special category, just for this!

Anyway, what's the usual dividing line between media being called "violent" vs "hyperviolent"? The graphic nature of the violence being presented?

for video games: Is GTA:SA more violent than say a WWII shooter due to the nature or amount of violence? Or does it take something really fucking sadistic like Manhunt or Postal 2?

for movies: what about something like Saving Private Ryan, which is a really fucking graphic WWII flick offset by long periods of drama, versus something like Hard Boiled or a Jackie Chan movie in which the violence is far more constant but completely unreal?

I guess this is a question of word choice: for those that actually use that word, what's the threshold for when that word applies? when does one become the other?

With hyperviolence the blood spurts in slow motion and you can see the tendons and bone fragments.

so it's just the graphic nature of the violence portrayed?

I've never heard of "hyperviolent." Why says that?

They say it to hype the violence in a particular movie:

"So hyperviolent you'll be spitting out teeth!" -Newsday-

"I spewed on the screen and no one knew it. Super hyperviolence!" -Women's Wear Daily-

"If you bring your children to this movie you'll have to kill and eat them afterward, to prevent them from growing up criminally warped by all the hyperviolence in this flick." -Rex Reed-

It's like the hyperspace scenes in Star Wars, except with severed limbs.

If I refuse to choose, you won't come after me with a chainsaw, will you?

"hyperviolence" involves the forced extraction of unicorns from wormholes

"ultraviolence" is an obscure Japanese videogame power-up

If I refuse to choose, you won't come after me with a chainsaw, will you?
