Where were you in 92?

hi, i've been around for a little bit but this is my first top post so i guess an introduction is in order. i'm danny viborg, a graduate student from oakland. not really a professional in the music biz, more of a dabbler.

so here's my question. i just heard peaches' "shake yer dix (tiga's where were you in 92 mix)". i can't really stand peaches tired, sensationalist vocals, but the production kills it! i really like the old school rave meets electroclash feel. so i'm hoping to find the source of the sample of air horn/crowd noise in that track. my life needs more air horns and crowd noise. any leads?

Check on ILM

In 1992 I was in high school. I was on the drama team and in the writing club. I also had my first sexual experience (but not intercourse).

In 1992, I was working at LIFE magazine and foolishly got involved with a co-worker (well, it didn't seem foolish at the time). We broke up, and both life and LIFE became one big facsimile of Hell.

Music was better then, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

LIFE is Hell.

You can't move a thread - and the question is posted on whichever board you clicked 'Ask A Question' on. You can ask on ILM too - it's your best bet.

my first year of middle school (or junior high), and probably one of the worst years of my life. the other kids were mean to me, i didn't see any of my friends from grade school, and since the school was convinced that every new student was involved in DRUGS and GANGS, the hall monitors were even nastier than the kids.

I was thirteen, which means I'd just begun 7th grade. And since 7th grade is the first year in upper elementary school here in Finland, I must have felt old back then. My puberty had begun already, I remember distinctly that my pubic hair began to grow at quite an early age. I was playing role-playing games and listening to Eurodance and British hardcore techno. Other than that, I can't really remember. It wasn't a particularly memorable year. Besides my parents' divorce (which wasn't a big shock, since it was years in the making), nothing dramatic happened in my teen years before 16 or 17.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

The worst year of my life! Hurrah! (Though possibly it was eclipsed by 2001.)

Ah, 1992. Shoegazer and indie, loads of good bands. Abusive boyfriend who almost set my hair on fire. So I moved to Melbourne. That was probably the best thing I ever did.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Doing my GCSE's. Listening to shoegaze/indie rock/grunge bands. Also when I started drinking and smoking pot! Happy days. Actually probably was the first good year at secondary school for me, the 3rd & 4th years were pretty crappy.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

I was 9, chilling in Grade 4. It was a good year, I started hanging out with one of my closest friends, got loads of time off school to go to New Zealand. My teacher Mrs. Fu11in4w was balls though. She wouldn't let me play in the ACC football Grand Final because I was wearing the wrong fucking socks. Bitch wouldn't even let me on the bus, I had to stay at school with some younger class.

CMB, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

was 12, half the year in hong kong, the rest in the UK for the first time. cold. 6000 miles away from the girl i fancied. fancied a new girl towards end of year. whacked off a lot.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Ah, 1992. Shoegazer and indie, loads of good bands.

Yup. And going to my first ever gigs - The Cure, Reading Festival and The Sultans Of Ping FC!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Ah. That was the big year of Riot Grrrl, or at least the beginning of it. And going to see Suede, Pulp and St Etienne in a big group of people who were friends with them. Also the year I went to my first Damien Hirst show and moved opposite the White Horse in Hampstead, which was a great development for all sorts of reasons.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Good grief, Laura and I went to some of these gigs. Small world innit?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

It is. End of year was capped by being asked to read (my own fiction stuff) onstage with thee huggy bear at Brixton Academy when they opened for the pavement and the Sonic Youth. Quite a lot of people saw that and I suffered with strange, cowering and therefore unsuitable boys approaching me about it for six months afterward.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Bloody hell, was that you? I remember that! L said it was the best bit of the evening!!

started the year in peterborough on my teacher training placement. then back to cambridge to finish off rest of PGCE, then got a (surprise) teaching job in a cambridge community college and moved into a place on Gilbert Road.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Second year of secondary school, not really going out at all, buying Horse and Pony magazine religiously, seeing just how many posters of Downlands Cancara I could acquire, half heartedly playing the tenor horn, asking for things like jodhpurs for my christmas present, then never having a reason to wear them. Generally bad times. Living in a caravan, frequently having to explain why, being called a gyspy for the next 5 years as a result, increasingly withdrawn at school.

(nice work on making this an ILE thread everyone :))

at this point in 92 i was just about to leave home and go to College, which was pretty mental as i'd just about given up due to appalling a-level results, but then scraped in at cheltenham after a last minute clearing interview. i think i had a mark gardener inspired hair-cut (no, ok, i KNOW i had one).

i also happened to be at university in kingston, ontario. it was a pretty good time. school was ok, i had 2 shows on the campus radio station, and then became the MD, which was my first real start in the music 'biz'. i was pretty happy. i drove to toronto lots to do interviews with bands (james! charlatans! catherine wheel! ride! slowdive!). and yes, i really did do a lot of raving, as well as organising and DJing at raves in kingston. yee-ha!

carly (carly), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Haha the very beginning of '92 there was this huge screening for Wayne's World which I went to with Nick's old flatmate and we returned to the flat triumphant having spotted Neil Tennant, thus making Nick extremely jealous. Nick also DJed at a sparsely populated club called Fortress Europe and would dance to his own records. My best friend from home, Nellie, was over doing an internship for Sir G30rg3 Y0ung and most of the time we were the only two girls there apart from the promoter's girlfriend. The only other people that seemed to turn up were P3t3 A$t0r and L@wr3nc3 (Nick's friends) plus a couple of assorted oddities.

That year changed from one extreme to the other at almost exactly its midpoint, and I spent a lot of time at the Falcon, the Good Mixer and the Monarch besides the Cheval Blanc, but also around the ICA and the young artists I was starting to meet.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I was 16 and backstage in a high school play giving hour-long back massages to a Swiss exchange student named Naomi (for whom I had a serious longing deep down in my pants) and most emphatically not having the fucking balls to attempt to kiss her, ever. When I wasn't wearing out the tapedeck in my mom's Civic with Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, that is.
Also, I was on the swim team even though I was a little fat. And I was still convinced that I was a genius (learning otherwise was a profoundly painful experience that didn't roll around until I nearly flunked out of college in 1995).

willpie (willpie), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Gee, I was twelve years old in 1992. I couldn't have been too many places. In fact, my life existed solely inside this tiny sphere of home, school, church, and a few stores and restaurants. Hm. I was still in grade school. 6th - 7th grades, actually. This would've been the first full year I was aware of a thing called MTV and a thing called VH1. I was also perhaps in a rapidly more '80s-obsessed La La Land, but not without also slowly acclimating myself to *gasp* new music. And, um, yeah, puberty. Which had actually arrived the year before, but was really letting me know it was there in '92. Oh, and I began catchecism classes in the second half of that year in preparation for confirmation. And I got audiocassette tapes for Christmas! I wrote a wish list and got several of what I want, including a Nirvana tape, because I liked what I heard from them. And... yeah. That's it.

1992. Wow. What a year. I was living with a friend who is no longer with us. My band had just come off tour, my hair was pink, and life seemed full of possbilities. I was 25.

turned 16 in august. waited for the matthew sweet anime vid to come on mtv, went to my first comic book convention(my dad hung out in the lobby and some of the viewing rooms), learned to drive a stick-shift that summer by sitting in a blue chevy S10 truck, listening to a tape of "Paranoid" on repeat, and going back & forth in the driveway. sophomore/junior year in high school.

first discovered Sam & Max, finally discovered the AOR station out of Midland(93.3 WKQZ) and Led Zeppelin. Listened to a lot of Queensryche and Queen and Aerosmith. Began to think about applying to the Air Force Academy(funny how that one turned out). Switched from playing piano to taking acoustic guitar lessons. Roadied for my buddy's teenage band since i was the only guy they knew with a (small) pickup truck that could hold drums. read a LOT of X-men. 2400 baud modem on local BBS's.

and later that year, having my best friend's U.S. Senate connections(he was an intern for the local Democrat) getting us into the Clinton/Gore '92 victory party at the local UAW hall in Flint. Good times. I think my parents voted for Perot.

To sum up: comic books, computer games, classic rock, and Bill Clinton.
