Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

Have you seen it? Did you like it?

I saw it last Friday (ostensibly while at lunch) and thought it was good. Sure, it's very similar to Nightmare Before Christmas in some ways (I think I liked NBC better, actually), but that's Tim Burton for you.

What say you?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I am beginning to suspect Mr. Burton is a necrophiliac.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

The last defensible (very good in some ways) film Burton made was Sleepy Hollow, and the last unfuckwithable movie he made was Ed Wood - so I'm not really expecting much.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm so psyched for this.

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

I only just noticed posters for this and was all, "What the...a Nightmare sequel? What is this?" I'm intrigued, though...

Milo mostly OTM except I still haven't seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yet to comment on it (though once again it seems he veers wildly between commercial baths and smash successes).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm beginning to suspect Mr. Burton is a...GOTH!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

OH YOU DIDN'T

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

It's sort of sequel-y, while being completely not.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

it's getting reviewed well

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

So this isn't directed by Henry Selick then, like Nightmare Before Christmas? Too bad. Anyway, since Nightmare is the best film Burton's ever been involved with, I guess my expectations are quite high with this. I see the score is by Danny Elfman, which is great - the one thing that made James and the Giant Peach worse then Nightmare Before Christmas was that the non-Elfman songs weren't as good.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Is Corpse Bride made by stop-motion animation like Nightmare? Cause the trailers I've seen look very CGI, although the designs and the whole look of the film is similar to Nightmare. Of course, you could argue that all Burton movies have a similar feel and look.

Speaking of Henry Selick, he's directing a film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Coraline" which I'm really looking forward to. "Coraline" is a great children's book, very well written, even though the goth Alice in Wonderland premise was a bit of a put-off at first.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

they're coming out with a Nightmare Before Christmas video game sequel next month, called "Oogie's Revenge". Has all the voices, etc.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

According to IMDb it is stop-motion, but it's shot with a with a new sort of digital stop-motion camera (whatever that means). I haven't seen the trailer, but they've might've digitally enhanced the picture in post-production... Which, if true, is a pity, because the magic of stop-motion is to see real, physical objects come to life, and that doesn't work if it looks too much like CGI.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Tuomas. Yeah, I just saw the trailer a couple of weeks back, and from what I can remember, it doesn't look like it had PIXAR standards of CGI, but it's definitely smoother than Nightmare. I didn't really like the slickness - one of the best things about Nightmare was just how everything in it seem to have different textures and weight. Still, can't wait to see it.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the trailer has very slick, plastic look to it. It looked so cgi I'm surprised they even bothered with the stop motion. A movie involving corpses shouldn't look so shiny and new.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Stop-motion filmed digitally, instead of with regular film. The traditional problem of stop-motion as I understand it is the lighting - maintaining consistent color temperature and brightness throughout the hours and hours it takes to shoot a single scene is not only a PITA, it's a HUGE BITCH. Bulbs go out, have to be replaced and then allowed to burn for 10-15 minutes or so to heat up to the level of the prior bulb, etc. etc. So I imagine using digitally taken footage makes it much, much easier to just take small lighting changes in stride and then balance all the frames to the same levels later in post-production. Resultant filtering likely produces CGI-looking gradients etc. "shiny and new"

Point being, "being too CGI" is the least of the problems with this film, I mean seriously, people, TNBC is utterly snoozeworthy, who even greenlighted this?

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Tom, there are lots of people (including most posters on this thread, I'd assume) who don't think Nigthmare is "snoozeworthy", so maybe we actually want to discuss the details of this one, even if it sounds weird to you.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

SHAME ON YOU TOM FOR EXPRESSING A NEGATIVE OPINION! WE WILL BE FORCED TO FLOG YOU WITH GUNS NOW ;-)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

It's just that I don't like folks rounding opinions with "seriously, people", as if we haven't yet gotten something that he already has.

"Yes, now that I think of it seriously, TNBC is utter twee-goth shite! Thank you for pointing it out, I'm glad I took a moment to think about it seriously."

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, people, Tuomas is a poncey closet goff socialist and that's the least of the problems with this messageboard.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

"Goff socialist"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Tim Burton should make a movie called GUNFLOGGING.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

GOLFER SOCIALIST

I thought YOU were a goth, TOMBOT. Admittedly in a clever disguise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Can someone explain to me why the first phrase that popped into my head after reading "FRISBEE GOLFING SOCIALIST CLOSET" was "Capri pants!" (complete with exclamation point)?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Admit your Zubaz love.

THESE COLORS DON'T RUN (unless you wear them while jogging)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, there should be something in the Constitution about not putting the flag on your sweaty, steroid-afflicted crotch. Why is it that the people most het up about flag-burning are the same ones who fall over themselves to buy American flag thongs?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

How else are you going to look 'good' while doing it for your country?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

If you still have the thong on, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG OMG

The Ghost of Cotton Friction Is Not Your Friend (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

They would have been so much more successful if they had worn gothic zubaz.

They Might Be Goths

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Your search - goth zubaz - did not match any documents.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

And there would be such a market for them!

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

We must correct this lack. (I use 'we' to include all of humanity, so I have to do nothing.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Tim Burton can wear them to film premieres.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Robert Smith will have pants that fit him.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

*arches eyebrow* Quite literally below the belt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I am seriously going to make this happen. Think of all of the goths out there that need pants with elastic waistbands. I am going to be rich!

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

(Okay, I didn't need a mental image of Robert Smith wearing Zubaz on his dick.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

It would probably be the classic goth zubaz "kiss me kiss me kiss me" print.

Anyway, since Nightmare is the best film Burton's ever been involved with

This statement is not true, obviously.

Also, saw it today; not bad; better than Charlie. I want to like it more than TNBC.

I also find it profoundly interesting that the Bride herself looks kind of like Lisa Marie and Victoria (Victor! Victoria! HAHAHAHAHA) looks kind of like HBC... It could also be that I want to think Burton is the type of director who sends messages about his current state through his films.

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Better than Charlie by a mile, and better than Nightmare Before Christmas by a bit. It felt a little short in the story department, like the Corpse Bride needed more fleshing out in her decision to give Victor up, more comment and fewer long shots that were meant primarily to show off the set.

Much of it was great, though. All of Elfman's song-and-dance routines were good, loved the Napoleon skeleton and maggot, 'Grandpa!' and so on.

It does look much smoother and more like CGI animation than Nightmare. Sometimes it was so smooth that you couldn't tell the difference (lighting aside) from a Toy Story-type cartoon.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 30 September 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

For a moment just a moment i thought the title of this thread referred to Helena Bonham Carter. Apologies.

^^ I thought that too. I saw it tonight. I think Charlie was better, but I liked all the little sight gags. One of Victoria's ancestors looks like Molesworth! That's topp.

stet (stet), Sunday, 23 October 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Deliciously designed and executed ... Some of the characters get laughs before they opened their mouths. Nice gags too (the dead justice making himself a drink). The camera swoops also look 'real.' I could've done with more songs, but certainly the best thing TB has put his name on since Mars Attacks! (possibly excepting C&CFactory, which I haven't seen). Helena BC at last gets a more goth role than Fight Club.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

hum... i thought it was pretty boring... which is weird cos I like burton and, from the trailers, thought i'd really like it. but no. nothing happened. the songs bothered me a lot. some funny things here and there and it's really well executed. but just didn't do it for me.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

So anyway I picked this up last night in SF at this store where a friend of my sis's works and she and I saw it when we got back to her place since she hadn't seen it yet either. We both liked it a lot! Lots of funny bits, the exact ending actually had me guessing, probably the best work Danny Elfman's done in years -- good stuff, and just long enough at 77 minutes. Christopher Lee brilliantly cast once again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it was good, I didn't like the backstory song the skeleton sang though, the whole sequence went on too long.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 March 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

sucked, tim burton tries to imitate himself-when-he-was-good and fails.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Saturday, 4 March 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

'Bride' stripped bare is an interesting article about the making of this film, wich was done using regular (expensive) digital still cameras.
