A few of my friends had pet turtles back in the day, and washing your hands afterward was something that got drilled into your heads. I'm sure this isn't a case of bad turtling as much as lazy parenting.

I think it's the painted turtles in particular that are more known for the fatal feces, but yeah, I remember as a kid (and I'm an old fucker) to always wash my hands after handling turtles, painted turtles in particular..(not the totally awesome box turtle pictured right above, of which one reverse-adopted me as a kid. I fed that thing so many strawberries and sowbugs. He/she kicked ass.)

I had one too! We picked it up off the road of Kentucky. Later, back in my home of Green River, Wyo., it was ran over by a car on Bridger Drive. RIP turtle 19??-1988.

― latebloomer, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:56 (eighteen years ago)
my wife and i just inherited two red eared slider turtles. i'm practically having panic attacks because one of them has a fungal infection. and i'm like "we need a $90 filter, an a $200 aquarium and 18 different kinds of food and aaagghh" when the girl who gave them to us kept them in what are basically giant tupperware containers and fed them turtle food and occasional vegetables.
but we don't have that kind of idiot luck, so panic panic panic.

There is a 'natural history museum' for kids at my mall and they have tanks with some red-eared sliders, one with two soft-shells, and one with this craggy old beast of a snapping turtle, his shell all coated in this freshwater mossy plant. I can just watch them forever. The soft-shells are so beautiful, but they look like aliens, too, all flat and smooth with that weird sucker-nose. The snapper's my favorite though – he's got that 'wise old turtle' thing, but he also seems a complete salty bastard. They're just inspiring.

some of my favorite childhood memories are from when we lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and occasionally I'd find a turtle and my mom would let me keep it for a few days, then set it back out into the world. turtles gotta be like the most endearing non-mammal known to man.
― some dude, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

The top "pond turtle" of felicity's looks just like my boyfriend's red-eared slider (um), and I would not like to have that running up to my toes looking for food, vicious bitey critter that it is (but cute, of course).
Anyway, he says - the boyfriend, not the terrapin - that a big enough terrarium is important (and be warned that they grow as big as their environment can take, so if they've been cramped and they get a bigger home they're going to grow) and a heater and a sun-lamp + sunning rock (might be more optional where you are than in the UK climate), but apart from that they're fairly resilient. His is in her late teens and for the past decade has mainly eaten mealworms and not much else; she refuses to eat any of the salad leaves or vegetable pellets we give her, so if yours are currently eating their veggies this is probably worth encouraging.

When my wife and I went to Maui a few years ago, we ate lunch one day at a little place in Lahaina whose name escapes me, right on the water. While we ate, there were, like, scads of sea turtles coming right up near the restaurant, popping their little heads up out of the surf every couple of minutes. Adorable.

― fields of salmon, Sunday, 26 July 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)
Turtles are noisy little chaps. Our red-eared slider likes to get in one corner of the tank and swim frantically against the tank wall, scratching her toes against the plastic. ALL DAY (and night). Really hoping the neighbours can't hear.
The first time she did this it was egg-laying time and we hadn't provided a big enough sandbox to lay in, but now she just gets phases of scratching, and last time we put out the sandbox she didn't lay any eggs, just repeatedly flipped the sandbox over to catapult sand over the living room.
(She's pretty clever at learning from previous escape attempts, so I believe this was a deliberate form of amusement)
I am posting this maybe in case someone says "we had that, here is how we stopped it" but mostly because I have a day off and it's happening now and it's hard to think about much else.

I have placed a variety of tank ornaments (logs, rocks, etc) at the scratching end and am watching her devise ways to move them out of the way, climb up them to see if she can get over the edge of the tank, etc. Unfortunately it doesn't take her long.
Next pet needs to be less clever.

maybe you need a torus-shaped tank so she can keep swimming in the same direction without actually leaving the tank
or position a video like this one at the scratching end. That way she'll think she's heading back to the seaside.

I have a Texas spiny softshell turtle, and he was doing all the scratching. I kept saying, "Chareth, you are making my life into an Edgar Allen Poe story." Eventually he stopped. So you may want to teach your turtle some empathy via literary allusion.
Also I think it helps that his tank has a gratingly loud filter.
