Tempted to say Fresno or Imperial..

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, it has to be King's! What's worse than that? I swear I saw a hitchiker's skull at the side of the highway, eye sockets being pecked at by giant crows.

(VERY surprised no one picked on O.C. yet)

As I am here, it is automatically hallowed ground (yet polluted, in the same way that the moneylenders corrupted the Temple, provoking Jesus's indignation).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

OC vs. King's...

Well, OC actually has things, buildings, PEOPLE, LIFE in it , so it wins by default.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Alpine county wins this with Kings a close second.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Markleeville used to have a great biker bar in it, though.

Imperial is the poorest, apparently, and also the newest.

The valley was named for the Imperial Land Company, a subsidiary of the California Development Company, which at the turn of the 20th century had reclaimed the southern portion of the Colorado desert for agriculture.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Does 395 go through Alpine County? If so, I can't knock it, because it provided a beautiful backdrop for me with all the snow when I drove down it almost three years ago.

and I didn't nominate Imperial just because it's the poorest.. it was mainly because of the Salton Sea... probably because it just symbolically and physically is just depressing (and stinky) as hell, for reasons I won't go into. That said, I was unaware of some of the other recreational areas in the County.

At least Kern county (where Bakersfield is) has Buck Owens.. and the northern edge of the Tejon pass... Frazier Park, etc.

That said, I say Fresno County. It's got Coalinga -- 'nuff said.. and Fresno... and some other smaller sub-Fresno cities around it. And lots of manure, dirt, and haze. 'Nuff said.

Wait.. in WHICH county is the central valley I-5 In-N-Out Burger located? Kings or Fresno? Whichever one DOESN'T have it wins for worst county. (I may be a vegetarian, but In-N-Out can still make great animal style "grilled-cheese" "sandwiches")

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I love destroying all of my UK friends' conceptions about panoramic California drives by describing the sheer drudgery of the I-5. You have to love a highway where you can measure the time left by which correctional facility you just passed.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

My favorite I-5 prison - whichever one houses the aging perpetrators of the Chowchilla bus kidnapping.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

adam, that's hilarious and depressingly true.

donut, 395 goes through part of Alpine but the drive from 50 through Alpine on 89 to395 is awesome.

I wasn't picking on Imperial for being poor. It's poor 'cause it's recently developed agricultural land dominated by agribusiness - that's why I was picking on it.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Who needs the correctional facilities when you've got That One Cattle Ranch/Slaughterhouse?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

You're so fucking brutal.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

5 is the one highway I can think of where you're doing 90 mph and you still feel like you're moving backwards.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

You should probably take the car out of reverse.

SOCAL vs NOCAL FITE!!

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I gotta go with Kings.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

It has to be a central county.

Way too much beauty in the coastal west, the mountainous eastern parts, the desert-y south, and the mountainous/foresty north parts of the state (for totally different reasons)

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Although Crescent City somehow defies the coastal west "beauty" part.. but it's not anywhere near the bottom though. (And I'll grant it, given it's gotten a tsunami in the past.)

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

There are a lot of tiny counties west of i-5 that I really know next to nothing about. No desert county can be the worst because california desert is beautiful. No coastal counties. Nothing on the i-99, which is green and moderately pretty.

San Bernadino and Riverside would be good choices if they didn't happen to extend toward the desert. Kern would be great except for the mountains and the Kern natural reserve.

But Kings county is just 100% pure awfulness.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

That should say east of the I-5, not west.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

That One Cattle Ranch/Slaughterhouse?

My girlfriend and I were having dinner in Mexico and they had Harris Ranch wine which just made me think of that horrible smell on the 5. I think the waiter was kind of confused and offended that we giggled at his wine.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

As regards the counties I see on any regular basis, San Joaquin is my least favorite. It's too flat and always filled w/smog. I don't really know the northern counties well enough to say much about them either way.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

nothing on the i-99, which is green and moderately pretty.

Which part of the 99 have you driven on? There are stretches of that road that are some of the most depressing places I've seen in CA. I think it's a far uglier drive than the 5.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

It's uglier though less dull.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

99 is the noise freeway and 5 is the drone freeway.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Which part of the 99 have you driven on? There are stretches of that road that are some of the most depressing places I've seen in CA. I think it's a far uglier drive than the 5.

I drive it from San Francisco to Los Angeles when I don't have the patience for the I-5. I don't know, I've always liked it better. Granted, we're comparing two terrible drives.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I wish the 101 didn't add so much time to the drive, it would render both the 5 and the 99 worthless.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I've driven the 5 from LA to San Jose for years and lately I've started taking the 101. It's really not that much longer and it's sooo much nicer. Only in the daytime though as it would be kind of pointless at night. I've only gone on the 99 when I've had to go up near Sacramento and it starts to get pretty bleak around Modesto and Stockton.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

My Dad always used to take 101 to 152 to 5.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I've been on the US-395 bit through Alpine county and the drive is indeed spectacular but my main beef with the place is checking out Markleeville (which I hadn't yet been too) and finding it utterly anti-climatic. Even the biker bar was Delaware-like.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I love taking any one of the state highways connecting US-101 to I-5. CA-198/CA-25 is my favorite for drive quality vs. speed, but CA-58 to the south is a fantastic driving road.

Don't forget to stop at the Parkfield Cafe for an Earthquake Burger.

I used to drive from Oxnard to San Jose all the time, for which the 101 was the only way to go. Great drive. If I had to pick between 5 and 99 I'd probably prefer 99 since theres more cities to drive through.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

So, no nominations for Yuba County?

I've yet to hear anyone say anything good about Yuba City... maybe the county's overlap with some national forest ground is its saving grace, and the main city itself is just bleeaah?

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

polyphonic, what about Tahoe, Death Valley, Yosemite, King's Canyon, Mono Lake and the east side of the Sierras?

In all honesty, my knowledge of most of the unpopulated parts of California is limited to a discussion of how nice the drive is. King's seems to be located right in the middle of my least favorite drive in California, but it probably isn't particularly bad, just damned by the fact that I've had to drive it so many times.

It's a tie between Orange County and Riverside County

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

King's is actually pretty fascinating (albeit in a rather depressing way - or if you are interested in agribusiness). Has anyone stopped anywhere in King's? (Kettleman City the most obvious I guess?)

Half of these counties I want to pretend don't exist.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Orange fucking County. That place can take its botox and raised pickups and go to hell.

For so many reasons, but mostly because of the stereotypes it creates that those of us that live in normal, workaday Los Angeles County have to live with.

SoCal!

carne asada, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

The raised pickup is totally an OC thing. Like, right across the Orange Curtain in Huntington Beach, you can start counting them. I once counted, no lie, 35 different ones b/t the 405 and the beach.

LA County is more about the beat up old Civics with kazoo-style exhaust pipes.

B.L.A.M., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

For King's County (and others in general), this looks possibly interesting

Come on, there's quite a bit of bleakness in the valley but it's a self-contained bleakness; Orange County is an active harm to the rest of the world. It's also so beautiful -- such a colossal waste. San Diego too.

theboyqueen, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

what is with the British phrasing of this thread title?

Anyway while I can't think of anything particularly attractive about King County (Corcoran State Prison reprazent!) OC is hands down THE WORST, agreed about the "active harm" element.

I've been shooting a film project in Madera County recently. Anyone familiar with it? It's very weird.

I also spent a bit of time in some of the seedier parts of Fresno. Anybody else know that long strip of godforsaken highway cluttered with perfectly rundown retro motels? That part is crazy.

inkbitch, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Alpine County got a little press in the late 60s when some gay organization tried to get gays and lesbians to move there so that it would become a gay-majority county with respect to voters, and so they could allow things that weren't allowed elsewhere. NBC's Laugh-In made a lame joke about this - a title card saying "Alpine County flies bi-planes" in their party sequence section.
