Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

because it looks ragingly unfunny and nobody watched it but you.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

And that line you quoted isn't helping.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Also I heard that watching that show will give you herpes.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

i made it through approximately 5 minutes and realized its just like worcester massachusetts.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I was cracking up at the first half of the show, but then was prevented by fate and technology from the second half. It's pretty danged funny!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

It was good. Not as good as I expected but better than most comedies. Plus Jason Lee is a former skater.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

A former skater AND a Scientologist!

How this affects the comedic value of this television show, I dunno.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Ned, in context that line PWNS.

fuck this show

kurt broder (dr g), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

“Dibs!”

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Earl was crackin me up last night. When was the last time a non-animated comedy made you LOL more than once in 30mins? I'll be watching this next week too. Plus, it's actually got a theme running through it. The scene in the gay club when IT Takes Two comes on is classic already.

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

it was quite funny in places. it very well might have promise.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Arrested Development

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

ah. good point Huk-L. must be all the p0t i smoke when i'm watching tv!

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

When was the last time a non-animated comedy made you LOL more than once in 30mins?

Arrested Development
Scrubs
Malcolm In The Middle
Will & Grace

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry about this, Dan, but I just imagined you and Ned watching Scrubs DVDs together and hugging and being all "we're just like Turk and J.D., aren't we."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Dan likes Will & Grace? I feel so disillusioned.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Will & Grace is shrill, tacky and wrong, which is precisely why I find it funny.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

malcolm in the middle is a giant festering elephant turd.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

oh jesus, lupton otm. i can't stand that show. unless you really like watching people being OVER THE TOP ALL THE TIME. i want to kick the dad in the balls.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha I don't understand you people at all.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Last time I watched MitM (a few years ago), I didn't like it, but I could see how it would appeal to a very young kid.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

This show was so underwhelming. I lasted to the second commercial break before switching to a Law & Order rerun.

I want so badly for Ned to call Dan "Brown Bear" on this thread.

Still haven't gotten 'round to watching Arrested Development, but everything I've read/heard indicates that I'd love it.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

SANFORD AND SON

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

you're all tv snobs. i liked this show just fine. pilots are always a little eh. if anything kills this show it will be the karma theme or the fox promos saying 'we havent seen reviews this good since the office!!'.

of course, jason lee is a pro-skatin' fox which helps a whole lot.

i wonder why its ok to mock and be grossed out by scientologists but its mean to mock a christian? theyre both man made(up) religions, right?

sunny successor (he hates my guts, we had a fight) (katharine), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I wish I hadn't learned that JL's a Scientologist -- thanks, ILE! The taint of same always makes people I admire seem...creepy.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

will & grace and malcolm in the middle are good

That wasn't a threesome that I wanted to picture.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I watched for 10 arduous minutes and then realized it was hideously unfunny, and that this show would only fly if they reworked it to be animated. Let's just say it ain't no Roseanne.

What I want to know is why ain't there a Head Cases following yet. Unlike this Earl show, I thought Head Cases was hilarious.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Dream on ya sick fuck.

Yeah, same here. It'll happen.

Happilly, we're living in the extreme DVD age.

The Ghost of Junk In The Trunk (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

What I meant by my MITM=kiddies love it! comment was that it all seems to be appropriately loony and quasi-innocent/naive and sort of slapstick and whatever.

The fact that I have not been recognized as Jesus is sad, but that means I can claim other avatars.

Ned, you are Xenu (Warrior Princess)!

I'm still laughing about "gatherer/stacker of souls"!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
This show is horrid, unfunny and condescending.

Malcolm in the Middle is funny, but maybe you have to be raised in a family w multiple siblings. Who beat up on each other all the time.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

WTF is wrong with you people this show is cute and charming and classic! Joy (Jamie Pressley) gets all the best lines: "I don't care if she's Chinese, Vietnamese er CHUCKY CHEESE!". And the thing about "that picture of Jesus and his buddy's having dinner"...? Whatever. Sometimes it's like I don't even know you anymore, ILX.

you can email me if you wish to challenge the truth (nickalicious), Friday, 23 June 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

This show is great.

S- (sgh), Friday, 23 June 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

"I don't care if she's Chinese, Vietnamese er CHUCKY CHEESE!"

This wouldn't even make the excelsior thread.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 23 June 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

this show fuckin sucks

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 23 June 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

I tried to sit through an entire episode tonight and failed. Nice to see the big fat skinhead from American History X still gets work though. He lost some weight.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Friday, 23 June 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

This show is hilarious and doesn't give you herpes. I wish the pics I linked upthread hadn't gone away.

Also gear was onto something!

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

earl is good. great concept, good execution and its a delight to look at jason lee for 22 minutes a week. no, i dont care that hes a scientologist.

my new suprise favorite sitcom is 'king of queens'. yay for reruns. i dont know why its funny but it is.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 23 June 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

it's just. so. fuckin. mediocre. I think it could be really good, but too many pulled punches.

Will (will), Friday, 23 June 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

so those of you that enjoy the king of queens will enjoy this show

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

There's something really off putting about the whole hipster-plays-redneck context.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

But Earl Hickey's not really a RED redneck type character (they left that for GIOVANNI RIBISI), he's just one of those guys that only owns flannel shirts.

you can email me if you wish to challenge the truth (nickalicious), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

"The redneck its OK to like"

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

GIOVANNI RIBISI's mom is the #1 recruitment officer for the Co$. The wife on king of queens is also a high level member of the church.

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

haha OMG!

you can email me if you wish to challenge the truth (nickalicious), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

GIOVANNI RIBISI's sister is married to beck now, nick. they are a power church couple. they have spawned. jason lee named his last kid pilot. kind of like travolta!

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

OMG I wonder if CRABMAN is a Scientologist too.

you can email me if you wish to challenge the truth (nickalicious), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

this show is the first thing I've liked jason lee in, if I haven't already mentioned that.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

PILOT INSPEKTOR

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

LA dude in obsession over who's in the Co$ non-chak-er. also I like this show so I am stupid and non-classy. I also do not like King of Queens but I think Leah Remini is hott but I'm not falling for her sneaky outerspace wiles.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I like like it a bit (those lines quoted above were great) but it seems the characters are too stuck in their conceptions to be interesting for very long. JL is always earnest and persistant, the sidekick is always dumb and childlike, Joy and her husband get off better, but not much. I think I only watch it because it's on before The Office.

My guilty low-brow pleasure was Reba, the two female leads have a good rapport.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

am i obsessed or am i BLOWING YOUR MIND? boom.

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

I also do not like King of Queens but I think Leah Remini is hott but I'm not falling for her sneaky outerspace wiles.

she expands and contracts over seasons. its fun to watch. jerry stiller is mostly wasted by the writing but the main guy bitching under his breath in a 4th grade way comes off pretty well and makes it easy to watch for me. its seems kind of weird to be all hip or highbrow about television. especially sitcoms.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 24 June 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

shitty is shitty. nothing hip or highbrow about it. the new sitcom with john lithgow and jeffery tambor looks like its going to be good. lucky louie is GREAT but probably not allowed to be counted since they say fuck on it.

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Saturday, 24 June 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Actually it's Hope and Faith I like, not Reba, with the added bonus that Ted McGinley's on it.

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 24 June 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

shitty is shitty.
i have so many problems with this sentence (that have nothing to do with you). its the reason i cant listen to music anymore.

the new sitcom with john lithgow and jeffery tambor looks like its going to be good.
have you seen the previews? it looks terrible to me. i love jt but he seems have to be sucked into some kind of lithgow vortex and the result is two old men running around all panicked and screeching for 1/2 an hour a week. i hope im wrong.

lucky louie is GREAT
yeah. this show absolutely kicks the ass of anything up thread.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 24 June 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

There is a Lucky Louie thread going already:
Come anticipate Louis C.K.s HBO sitcom LUCKY LOUIE with me

I thought I remembered a bunch of haters on it, but it's pretty much just s1ocky. I haven't made my mind up about LL but I definitely like it better than what I've seen of Earl.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Saturday, 24 June 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

This show features the fatty goth from Butterfly Effect, non?

http://i.imdb.com/mptv1.gif

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

really? who does he play?

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

He plays Earl's brother.

http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/77/18/00/10m.jpg

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

I can't watch this show because of him. The Butterfly Effect ruined him for me, as did Cold Mountain, the worst movie I've seen in the past three years.

My inner pedant also hates this show's simplistic view of karma as some kind of cosmic slapstick Code of Hammurabi.

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I mentioned him upthread. He was the big fat skinhead in American History X, back when he was about 100lbs heavier.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

It is pretty fun to watch this show is you have a precocious seven-year-old girl narrate a play-by-play as you watch it. "She's mad at him because he spent all her money on lottery tickets. But he's mad because she won't give him the keys to his car. The brother is locked in the trunk of the car. That guy who is helping him is nice. Earl helped him and got better karma." "That isn't how karma works." "It is on this show."

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 24 June 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

That's always fun unless it's someone else's kid at the movie theater.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Saturday, 24 June 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

abbott, i thought you meant lucky louie, but still. wow. i never realized that was the same guy but it seems so obvious now.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 24 June 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)
