Taking Sides: Tobias v. Tobit

In an earlier thread, someone claimed that the reason you don't get loads of people called Tobit unlike other Bible names is that The Book of Tobit is considered apocryphal by the kind of people who give their children Old Testament names.

Yet, there are plenty of people in the world called Tobias. This is the name of Tobit's dad in The Book of Tobit. As far as I know this name occurs nowhere else in the Bible.

So why are there many people named Tobias, and none called Tobit?

tobias would sound rather majestic and wistful if said with the voice of patrick stewart. i lack the gravitas to pull of tobias, as i am cursed with a thin beard, and shall ever think of myself as a tobit.

Interestingly, the latest issue of popular comic 'Promethea' mentions The Book of Tobit. Alan Moore describes it as being part of the biblical apocrypha to kind of imply it's chuckful of esoteric wisdom rather than just some stupid adventure story.

Praise Tobit.
