Apparently there's another CS on Thursday (19th). Who's going etc etc? And can you get 3 month returns on the blue bus or did I just imagine I got one?

DG, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yes I'm going and yes you can get 3 month returns on the blue bus.

MarkH, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Can't make it this time, I'm afraid - I just don't have the time off work. Still, I've given it a plug in the Strange Fruit newsletter, for what it's worth.

Paul Strange, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm going, if they'll let me in after last time. Hang on, considering the amount of money I spent on alcopops last time, there's no way they could turn me away. Has there been any publicity (apart from Paul's sterling efforts) this time?

alex thomson, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd go, but I've been banned from the Red Bus for shamefully drunken behaviour. Have fun, y'all.

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why not take the BLUE BUS instead?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think I'll be there this week as I am a bit of a fool like that. I'd ask if you would let me spin some tunes, but last time it was all CD and that's officially no good for me.

I assume lots of Club Sussed flyering was done at the big Radiohead gig.

Pete, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I had been planning to take Friday off work and go to Sussed but once again it seems I will be unable to. In a fit of optimism I decided that the only reason I haven't done anything interesting in the past 3 months was just that I was being too lazy and pathetic to bother making the effort, but actually I've remembered that it's because I'm too lazy and pathetic to know how to drive. Plus apparently there will be a Red Arrows display at work on Friday and hopefully I'll be allowed to spend an hour standing in the carpark watching it instead of working and still get paid. Yes, I'm sure Sussed is better than watching Red Arrows really, but this is almost certainly the most exciting thing that will ever happen during my job, so it might be foolish to miss it. So, as Kate said, have fun, y'all.

rebecca, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm not allowed to drink either at the moment.

Re: Flyering at Radiohead. Can you believe that Radiohead asked the Rock of Travolta *NOT* to flyer at the show, on the grounds that flyering was environmentally unsound. So, like all those W.A.S.T.E. cups littered all over the floor *WERE* environmentally sound, then?

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This gives us a valuable insighted in the the wonky eyed world view of ver'Radiohead.

Rock Of Travolta = not very high on priority list Being (or being seen to be) environmentally sound = pretty high of Radiohead priority list Beer - Highest.

Can you - in all conscience blame them for this. (To be fair though that hiughest on their priority list might be "Getting punters drunk so that they have the verisimilitude of enjoying themselves").

Pete, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Plus apparently there will be a Red Arrows display

Wher do you work? Nowhere I've ever worked got buzzed by the red arrows.

Ed, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm very poor. There is a chance this is the first club SUSSED I shall not be able to make.

WEEP!

sarah, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

aw, bless you DG. there has been copious flyering of ox over the past week, and mentions on local "what's on" sheets and local bbs, so *hopefully* there will be some ppl we don't know there this time. also we have local boy guest dj, who better have lots of mates, he certainly has a good solid indie-schmindie rekkid collection by the sound of things (i met him on the all tomorrows parties mailing list).

much as i'd love you to dj mr baran, as you pointed out it *is* cds only, nevermind...

carsmilesteve, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I will *probably* be attending, this week is insanely hectic and expensive:
Tomorrow: Go See The Lollies.
Thursday: Probably go to Oxford.
Friday: Go see a band up London somewhere.
Starurday: Picnic + Strange Fruit.
All of these activities will require a 4-zone travelcard (£4.30), and I only have a budget of £50 for the fornight starting on the 18th. Eek!

DG, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Remember I still owe you drinks, David, so you can count on me for bouze at both Lollies and Strange Fruit. Since I won't be ALLOWED to be drinking said bouze myself.

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In response to local boy (but what is his C-Name???) DJ's indie- schmindie horror, I am promising my poppiest and most sprawling sets yet. So there.

Tom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You've said it now Kate, you can't take it back. As for Thursday, you could get the big blue bus instead, it costs just as much and is a bit nippier, I think.

DG, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

DG, cheat at the weekend by getting that amazing thing, the weekend travelcard. I think I pay £6 for a Z1/2 when I get those so that's some of the hassle averted. And they now work on night buses.

I've got my hands full with meetings, interview and deadline, Idler party and picnic preps so won't be Sussed on Thurs. Have fun and see you on Saturday...

suzy, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In response to Tom's above post he will be tied up, covered in mirror tiles and hung pinata-like above the dancefloor like a giant disco ball.

carsmilesteve, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

All the better to sing along to "One More Time"

Tom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

DG - all zone Bus Pass. £2. If you ain't in a rush its the bollocks.

Pete, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd just like to add that every year the Red Arrows did a display over my primary school. As they zoomed from one end to the other, the kids would barrel along the same. Fantastic!

But SUSSED is better. Going is still debatable. Hmmm. It might depend on how frightening the Fighting Fantasy thread gets.

(My friends read those. In primary school. I didn't. No really. NO! Any primary school age girls here, my hint is, DON'T be friends with the boys. It leads to bad ways).

sarah, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm not going to Club Sussed III because it's an indie disco and there's not getting away from the fact with your clever words. I'm not goting to another indie disco until:

a) everyone starts putting a bit more effort into their appearance
b) there's cool lighting and/or other proper club tricks
c) the DJs start to be a bit more discerning about the discs they play, rather than playing any old tat that they think might get people dancing
d) there is no possibility whatsoever of the House of Pain's 'Jump Around' being played
e) everyone is on speed

Nick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Bloody hell Nick - you consider a club full of people on speed to be a good thing??? Ulp.

Emma, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh Nick oh Nick. How that indie person who despises indie thing GETS VERY BORING. Stay at home and listen to the bloody Smiths then. Maybe things will be pretty inside your own head. Whereas the people going out and have a laugh will all be out, looking gorgeous, and dancing to the ahem, "eclectic" (pissed) mixmastery of DJs with Silly C Names.

The all out on speed thing has been DONE, will probably be done AGANE, but honestly, if the £1.50 sangria is there, I'm sorted.

sarah, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

a) Can't help you there, as I am a scruffy biff. b) This would be good. c) Have tried getting people to dance at an indie disco? Even at the high class indie discos at which I have djed, half the crowd won't dance to anything unless it's Belle And Sebastian or some pre- 1996 'classic'. Being discerning normally means having to put up with endless requests for The Smiths, Belle And Sebastian and the fucking Stone Roses. d) Does this still get played? I haven't heard House of Pain for years. e) This is a good thing?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I give up.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh Nick oh Nick. How that indie person who despises indie thing GETS VERY BORING.

Boring answer: I don't despise indie. I just despise indie clubs.

Possibly even more boring answer: I've been through the " 'indie is boring' is boring" phase and now consider it quite boring. You've gotta keep up!

Honest answer: I was mainly joking (esp. about the speed thing) , and I'm sure Carsmile Steve runs an excellent ship.

It's not all just a 'I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me' contrarian thing. I do think there's room for a non-pissed up student disco style indie club somewhere. Where they concentrate on a particular kind of sound, like other specialist clubs do. And where there's a bit of effort spent on creating some kind of atmosphere better than that 'hired hall' feel you usually get. Maybe it needs a dedicated (small) venue, if such thing is possible. Such places might exist. I wouldn't know - I just stay in and listen to Smiths records.

A couple of years ago, DJs would play Harlem Shuffle and watch with glee as all the House of Pain jumpers dashed onto the dancefloor as the opening brass kicked in, then dashed off again when they realised they'd got the wrong tune. I, too, watched with glee, then enjoyed the space to shake my ass in.

Madchen, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah...it depends what you mean by indie discos. Strange Fruit and Feet First, both attended by me in the past two weeks, are both (more or less) touted as indie clubs and both were *totally* different. Feet First was like what Monday nights at Hollywood's in Romford used to be a bit like - primarily biased towards the kind of people who read both the NME and Kerrang, thus a playlist of pap like Ash and Feeder, plus a few tracks like the odious 'Jump Around'. SF on the other hand seems to me to be more aimed at the kind of people who swore by the Melody Maker, before it got shit, obviously. Therefore:
Feet First = poo. Strange Fruit = good.

DG, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think i will go. unless, i have to work early friday. I've had fun both times before. however, if too many people turn up, i will be too shy to do my spaz dance. hmm. probably not a bad thing. i shall try to be on speed. or something.

alix, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ooh, where are we meeting before the club? The Angel and Greyhound again?

DG, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes, pre-club = angel and greyhound.

All doubters should come along because I am going to do some once in a lifetime special mixing. AND because I have the last DJ slot for once.

Tom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A&G when? I may be there (uh, if you don't mind), even though I really really shouldn't be as getting home may cost a day's wages (assuming I can find any taxis that want to go that far), but, dammit, I am BORED and have not gone out and got drunk for three months [*] and I probably have more chance to go this evening than I will again for the foreseeable future, so, er, yeah. Maybe. If I can get myself changed out of my smart work clothes which I've been wearing all day into non-smart going out indie clothes (I'm sure there's something wrong there...) in time to get myself on the last bus.

[* So don't mock me too much if I fall over at the first mouthful of vodka. Oh, and I apologise in advance if three months without going to an indie club means that I have no intermediate stages between "too timid to dance" and "really embarrassing".]

Special guest local dj: if he's reading this (saw him on ILM) and remembers who I am then I owe him many thanks and apologies and most importantly DRINKS, and I've been meaning to email him since ATP to convey the first two. If I am there this evening then I will belatedly offer all three.

rebecca, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A & G from about 7.30 Rebecca - be great to see you there.

Tom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Thanks for coming everyone who did!
