Movin' Them Chains: A Thread for People Who Enjoy Talking About American College Football

I just noticed that the category of "Sports" comes between "Sex" and "Urine" on the ILE list: NICE.

So: how about Brian Calhoun and the Wisconsin Badgers beating #15 Michigan last night? How about University of South Florida? How about Harvard beating Brown in overtime? (Suck it, Brownies.) Ah, let's talk about this -- if at least Phil-Two and TOMBOT and Blount don't jump on this thread then they suck like suckers who suck, or like Brown.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

On Wisconsin! Barry Alvarez called Brian Calhoun one of the best athletes he's ever coached. It showed. All 80,000 people in Camp Randall would know Calhoun was getting the hand off and he'd still get five or six yards. The score would've been more lopsided had Michigan not scored on that gimmicky flea-flicker.

Bucky, Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen ANYONE run like that since Barry Sanders. The opening day game against Bowling Geen (yeah... I know...) where he was running UNDER tackles was amazing...

Jimmy Mod Loves Alan Canseco (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Bowling Gein.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

OH FOR FUCKS SAKE. Take it else where. We don't want to have to be forced to read about your stupid fucking jock passtimes, you hateful, retarded doucgebags. Go and pound on some faggots, the ones who work out and will wipe the floor with your semi-evolved faces. Douchebags.

Sensitive American, Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Are you kidding? Who's forcing you to read anything? And if you're not kidding, according to the ancient Hellenes, you semi-evolved fascist, athletics was an integral facet in the healthy life.

Anyways, I'd love to see Wisconsin have a banner year, since Alvarez is moving on to become the Athletic Director.

Bucky, Sunday, 25 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

This just in, Ty Willingham has taken over from Bob Dylan as the conscience of the nation... (Dylan in rematch to reclaim title Monday night on PBS.)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 25 September 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Are you kidding? Who's forcing you to read anything?

Bucky, the poster is snarkily referring to this:

"Except for one thing: I hate sports and the people who play them, care about them or care about the people who play them."

But this is about American college football and how the hated Trojans must finally collapse this year. Oops I gave it away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

congrats to dave wannstedt for finally guiding his alma mater (pitt) to its first victory of the season, holding off the div 1-aa youngstown state penguins 41-0. if only his bear and dolphin teams could have scheduled youngstown state...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 25 September 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Gawd, so THAT's what happened to Wannstedt. My coworker Tom and I were trying to figure out where he had gone to!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

My Cal Golden Bears are 4-0 after beating up four complete patsies. Hello, low RPI rating!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 25 September 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

how are FSU looking this year? I passed out at half time during my only live American footbal natch while attemptoing to watch them. All I can remember is the native american on the horse, the big cups of coke and the stadium spinning around me as the night before's debauchery kicked in.....again.

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

GO AZTECS

ath (ath), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

FSU beat Boston College on the road last week pretty convincingly. I think they're a solid national title contender for sure; they've already beaten Miami, and they won't really be tested until their season-ending game against Florida in Gainesville. I'm hopeful that they and Virginia Tech both win their divisions, since they appear to clearly be the class of the ACC; my beloved Syracuse Orangemen are next up as sacrificial lambs to the garnet and gold, but such is life.

I'm not really sure if Louisville is that bad or South Florida that competent (I lean toward the latter, I guess), but that game is going to give the Big East's critics all the ammunition they need; I didn't see a play of Harvard/Brown, but did manage to view the rapturous postgame throng of Biffs and Muffies as I rode my bike back home through Lower Allston yesterday.

Really looking forward to LSU/Tennessee tomorrow.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

My Ducks almost took care of the Trojans. Then reality set in.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

your duxx suxx

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I was excited about the Ducks; they're tough at home. Then they got their ass kicked. No shame in getting smoked by USC this year, though.

willpie (willpie), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

i would be interested in seeing usc play: texas, florida, virginia tech i guess, maybe ohio state. not sure who else would give them a real game. note: this doesn't mean that discussions of 'are usc the bestest college football team of all time?' aren't ridiculous.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Cal beat USC two years ago, came inches away from beating them last year, and are playing them in Berkeley this year. Should be a great game.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

so i guess the fightin' zookies were a fluke afterall. oh well.

also i cant decide who's cuter. matt leinart or joey harrington.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 26 September 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Joey Harrington is one of maybe five players in the NFL who aren't kickers who I could probably beat up.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

For me, Boston College is like this guy who always wanted to rock hard and appeal to everyone. So he gets in this band and he gets some gigs and pretty soon it seems his career is taking off. He even gets a video on MTV and has a big success with it. But, it seems his first highpoint in his career is to be his last. Cut to a couple decades later, when his "best of" disc comes out and the common problem everyone immediately notices is that every song sounds just like his one big MTV hit, "Bad To The Bone." And he hasn't moved past that one big hit, but at least he'll always have it, even if he has to live out that one moment of glory for the rest of his life. And that's what I think of when I think of Boston College. George Thoroughgood.

Clem Kadiddlehopper, Monday, 26 September 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

the Rose Bowl, while taking it's "turn" in being the stupid 'BCS championship' game, will continue to be the grandaddy of them all. And it will continue to feature a Big Ten team versus a Pac Ten team -- as God, in his infinite righteousness, intended. And it will feature SPARTY kicking the tar out of the University that hails from Southern California.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 26 September 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

i havent paid much attention to college football in awhile though. i think the last games i saw in person was when i had season tickets that year northwestern went to the rose bowl (and lost to fucking keyshawn johnson and usc) and then the next year when they went to like the citrus bowl (and got smooshed by tennessee).

is notre dame still suck? i hope so!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 26 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Notre Dame is good again.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

oh well. :(

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 26 September 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Penn State suddenly looking maybe, quite possibly for real, beating Ohio State 17-10 today. If all this means is wall-to-wall incoherent Joe Paterno interviews, I welcome our new Nittany overlords.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 9 October 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

As somebody who totally bought all the "JoePa needs to pack it in" guff of the last several years, I'm feeling kind of abashed.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 9 October 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

2nd quarter of that game had me on edge as the defense looked swiss cheese-like. 2nd half had me on edge period.

freaking fantastic to see this, though next week makes me nervous already...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Sunday, 9 October 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, Penn State killed Minnesota, and Minnesota beat Michigan. So naturally, Michigan will kill Penn State.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 9 October 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Ducks looking sharp tonight, too, Nym!

I should also mention Georgia, who dominated Tennessee on the road today en route to a big win; it already looks like there are a handful of teams (USC, Texas, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Georgia) who are totally dominant and could be legitimate contenders. Considering that the Top 10 is Penn State's likely destination after today, a win in Ann Arbor might well elevate them among the elite. They looked damn good today; Derek Williams is the real deal.

The first BCS ranking should be interesting. When does it come out?

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 9 October 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

ROLL TIDE ROLL

Bama cannot be stopped.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Go Bruins! 7-0.......

But still getting no respect from them pollsters.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Monday, 24 October 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
ROLL TIDE ROLL
Bama cannot be stopped.

bwahaha.

But my real point in reviving is...Penn State! Barring the last couple seconds of the Michigan game, it's been a hell of a season. And with Miami going under, they're into the top 3. Hats off to the man in the Coke-bottle glasses.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 20 November 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone watching the USC/Fresno St game? Holy crap! Fresno St just took the lead 42-41 with 9:47 left in the 4th.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to see the line on a USC-Texas championship. Two touchdowns, you think? Maybe more?

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

favoring who?

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

USC

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 20 November 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen texas play this year, i keep thinking they haven't really played anyone too hard this year and then remember 'o yeah, they beat ohio state AT ohio state' which is pretty fucking impressive. how's texas's d? usc's struggled sorta i guess but i've never doubted they were gonna win in any game yet. i can't imagine that spread's too big either way though i guess i'd understand more if it went usc's way since they're only going for 3 in a row and the big 12's sucked hard in their last two shots and texas is still coached by mack brown.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So, this Orange Bowl is pretty good. But somebody's going to get paralyzed from the eyebrows down, the way they're hitting.

truck-patch pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

I figure the key to whether Texas stays with USC tonioght is going to be whose offensive line gets most worn down in the fourth quarter. If USC can score on quick drives of 8 or 10 plays each, while Texas is forced to grind it out to score, then USC walks away winner, even if it's tied with 10 minutes left.

But what do I know? I'm just trying to get a minor brouhaha started.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Both college football and NFL should have the player who scres the touchdown kick the PAT. Suddenly teams would rather go for two than have linebacker try to pooch kick. I came to this conclusion after the shank-a-thon of the orange bowl.

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

That is pure, blinding brilliance!

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

It seems to obvious (ruby, ARF).

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

You can still have one (1) kicker for kickoffs and punts.
