I remember the first time I crossed the AMbassador Bridge as a child and ate dinner in Canada, I was grossed out by the flavor of "Canadian Sprite". My mom had to explain there was no such thing.

This page has downtown photos of dozens of Michigan towns and cities, though they're mostly "vintage" 50s/60s. One exception is Clare:

I work right next to the world's largest tire. You can't see it from the library, though.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Ken, it's crazy how Ontario and Michigan differ so much in color in the pic you posted.

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

(I like that Clare shot mostly for the very representative Michigan sky.)

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Nabbo, I can't get over how different our impressions are of MI. Lemme get home, I'll post loads of blue, blue sky and bluer lake and fall color everywhere -- Whitehall is postcard material from stem to stern.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Krispie, the pic is x'd for me, but is it this one:

(xpost to L) You lived south, I lived north! And to be honest the sky among those pics that most effectively grabbed me was in the very first one, which is Spring Street in Big Rapids, probably from about ten years ago. That kinda cold slightly-murky sky rules fall into winter and winter out to spring (see also the looming cloud presence in the pic right beneath), and then a good bit of summer is the kind of warm wet blankety look of that Clare pic. I get a little obsessive about different qualities of light, but I was pretty fond of all of those. Regular clear-sunny days (and obviously there were a decent number) just felt kind of off -- the real character up there felt like a sunny day with some weird vague shade thrown over it.

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that's the one.

More pic's please.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

See, I feel like there's an inherent value judgement here because I dislike cloudy weather so maybe that's my issue -- but wait, you've complained to me about the greyness so I'm not totally making it up! And Big Rapids is only a tiny bit north of Whitehall, the greater difference is probably that B Rapids is considerably inland.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I've google-imaged for Albion for years but never came across this until today:

http://www.michigan.gov/images/East_Erie_St_16745_7._Kalamazoo_River.jpg

This was the river that acted as my front lawn in my last home in Albion circa 1983. I fell in that river and got sucked under a dam. Not sure how I survived...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) EATEN there, I practically GREW UP there. The big white house next door with the brick pillars on the front porch was the home of Eth@n Wende11, who was a nice enough boy in my graduating class. I never had cause to call his house but I heard his grandfather would answer the phone by saying "gooood eeeeevening" like something out of an old suspense film. Probably just a nice old man with a formal manner but look what a bunch of grade-schoolers can do with that.

I've been to a couple of games at Comerica Park, but they were free tickets both times. It's...okay, but it's no Tiger Stadium.

I luvved Sandy.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Sandy got me thinking about the Aladan's Castle in the front corner of Meijer's we shopped at in Jackson, and how in the 70's, video games weren't, uh, video...but rather, weird little props slightly moving.

My earliest memory is a drag racing game where you sat in a seat with a sterring wheel and shifter (complete with working clutch), but behind the screen was an actual little orange car and a "christmas tree" to let you knew when to go. The rest was sound effects and number readouts.

I used to play one that had a helicopter on a wire and all you could control was clokwise or counterclockwise. You shot a beam of light at aliens that slowly arose from behind buildings. They had little targets on their heads.

Some similar era games I found here:

By the way! Laurel! It occurred to me the other day that maybe we just have different ideas of what constitutes clear, bright, and sunny. I mean, I moved to Michigan from southern Colorado, which is all dry-clear-bright; maybe normal Michigan-bright was just bound to seem gloomy in comparison.
