as someone new to the mp3 player market i am seriously considering grabbing this new toy. what i am really curious about is if any of the ilxor faithful have experienced any of the problems being reported about cracks? and/or any other issues?

pros for me are it is flash ,so no skipping during work outs and also the size of the thing.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

sometimes i see them and think they are TOO small. anything that expensive should at least be heavy.

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I've heard they scratch easily and this story talks about some faulty screens, might be a good idea to wait a bit to see if they work these things out:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/09/28/ipod_nano_apple_admits/

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Apple says the screens were a bad batch that account for 1 in every thousand Nanos shipped.

My friend's custom nano was scratched when it came out of the box but she doesn't care enough to send it back.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

This is apparently what it looks like:

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

hehheh...my phone did that when i sat on it !

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

they scratch REALLY easily. there is a thread on the nanos already.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

hey cutty...can you post a link to the thread as i did a search and found nuthin'.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

weird, i can't find it either. but i swear it exists.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

ipod nano is here!!

one eye white, one eye black (FE7), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

ah see I thought that was the thread for the celebration of the nano and this is the thread for the damning of the nano. Should I lock this one?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

recent threads haven't been indexed in the search function for some reason.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

but aren't ipods really susceptible to being scratched anyway. my ipod's (20 gb) back was quite scratched until i bought a bag for it.

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Apparently, the Nano is even moreso.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I have had mine for about three days and it hasn't scratched or cracked yet. however, my mom saw that article and freaked out and now wants me to get a protective case. My question: If it is in it's case, why does it matter if it's scratched or not, you can't see it. You get me?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

But then at night you can slip the case off and look at it all nude, pristine and shiny.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Reminds me of a guitar pickguard.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

A protective case would probably make it about as bulky as a regular ipod.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

WTF?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Remember when people used to put bras on their cars?

They still do! But now there's also transparent chip-protectant film which makes it possible to go all stealth-bra. Which, come to think, they cut in smaller sizes for the ipod.

re scratching, this is something owners of full-size ipods have learned to think of as "adding character," but if it bothers you there are already any number of slinky cases available.

check a bunch out at www.ilounge.com

re general fragility, I wouldn't worry. It don't look like much, but it's plenty tough thanks to the absence of a hard drive. If you haven't seen the infamous arstechnica torture test yet, it's worth a visit: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars/3

nano's also the best $/GB deal going right now in a flash DAP.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Someone please explain the car bumper harness to me? My mom said it was to repel bugs?!

The thing is, again, if if the car blanket keeps the bumber spotless, who would ever know? Might as well just fuck up your bumber then buy the concealer.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

bumber?!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

NEWSFLASH: EVERYTHING APPLE SELLS SCRATCHES AND DIRTIES UP V. V. EASILY. IN CASE NONE OF YOU NOTICED THIS WITH YOUR IBOOKS OR IMACS OR IPODS PREVIOUSLY.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I mean my iBook looks like I took it to central Baghdad for the amount of dirt and damage done to it, and all it does is sit on my desk. Once it had to be shipped to Apple because the video card fried out. They sent it back, cleaned and with new casing components! And it, once again, looks like I spend my days hitting it with a hammer. Not very many months after the replaced keyboard/internal-side casing!! And don't get me started on how crap my iPod, which has virtually ALWAYS resided in a blue leather case FWIW, looks. I mean I think they're self-destructive.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

And really, everyone I know in real life who owns an Apple product reports the same thing. Except Tombot, who doesn't count because he actually DOES take hammers to his PowerBook.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

My white iBook is filthy. I've been meaning to try and clean it forever. My mom's is still pristine, though she doesn't log as much internet time as I do (like most sane people).

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I checked out one of these Nano things at an Apple store and was duly impressed. I was tempted, but I'm still waiting for a > 2GB phone/mp3/2MPcamera thing in a similar form factor.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

The G5 towers scratch ridiculously easy. I think they used the softest metal known to man. I accidentally scraped it against part of my desk easing it into its corner, and gouged a huge line, it's absurd.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

When I got my iPod, Cozen told me not to use a case, as in time the scratches wore the case to a fine buffed finish. This was complete rubbish and 2 years on my iPod looks a fucking mess but I don't really care. Better than smothering it in some stupid fat casing.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

that sounds so like cozen

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

The G5 towers scratch ridiculously easy.

Tell me about it - I only had mine in my pocket for a couple hours and it had all kinds of dings all over it by lunchtime.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Why not just wrap the nano in cellophane?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I went up to the Apple store to buy a 4gb black nano, but they didn't have any in stock. Now it's a new day and I am having second thoughts. The models they had on display were scratched so bad, they looked like they'd been on display for two years. I'm thinking I might just wait for the next generation.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

hey wait a minute

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

nano = classic. and I'm far from a mac zealot.

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

my little screen got scratched:(

Why not just wrap the nano in cellophane?

-- Spencer Chow

Got one :O)

Whatever you call that cellophane that is adhered to the front of the screen... I've left it on, and just snipped it slightly above the controls. And slapped a silicon cover on it instantly. I'm sure a stray key or something will mark the screen eventually but at least I tried.

Anyway, it seems to WORK so far which is a f***** miracle! For this PC anyhow... more fiddling to do but I'm happy enough so far. Sound quality is a bit ehhh so far but I expected that (yes Apple, for a bit more -effort- you might have got an extra £170 from me for the £60GB model. The Nano is about all I trust you fuckers with ok?).

fandnano (fandango), Thursday, 29 December 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I ordered this today

http://www.xtrememac.com/cases/nano/imgs/sel_iconz_speedracer.jpg

TOMBOT, Thursday, 29 December 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

nano - classic, with Ml_pod plugin.

iTunes - HUGE FAT DUD! good grief this program got fugly & even more system crippling since I last used it. Takes an eternity to install and slows down EVERYTHING by what feels like 10% overall with all its obscure background services. Begone (uninstalled) foul thing!

fandnano (fandango), Friday, 30 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

so... that thing about iPod nano's having skipping problems with Lame VBR mp3's. Which is you know, my whole collection, which I am NO WAY re-encoding to anything else thanks all the same.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=37025

THAT could get more publicity! FFS!!

Doesn't happen very often, but at does happen at least ooh, every day.

Not dud, not classic anymore, just the same old shit.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 12 January 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

FFS. That explains the skipping then. Apple spends far too much time pushing shiny-shiny-new-new out the door and not enough going back and fixing the broken bits in their wake. When they broke iPod batteries with a dud update it took eight months to fix. Last summer they broke Smart Playlists on 4G iPods and that only got fixed yesterday. Grrrr.

stet (stet), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

God, I need to polish up my ("UGH, how is this not a major issue/flaw? are you blind?!) bitch-list that is long overdue sending to the Apple Developers address.

stet, do you think this will get fixed eventually? I'm not planning on being one of those tools who buys a fresh iPod every semester 'cos they run out of HD space. Then again I could brasso-unscratch my nano, sell, and jump ship on the whole damn apple 'life' right now... I'm not going to just yet though.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Ssh RJG, I'm hoping nobody will see my secret apple shame

stet (stet), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

fandago: yes, it will, send feedback about it though -- that's how they prioritise what's getting fixed. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html

stet (stet), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the address. Will DEFINITELY report this (minus the swearing and hyperbole and in my bestest grammer).

fandango (fandango), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:09 (twenty years ago)

; )

might wanna spellcheck it, too

RJG (RJG), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

looks like I turned that off (in my brain) tonight *groan*

fandango (fandango), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Q: is it going to fuck my battery completely prematurely if I am using this as a flash drive pretty heavily (i.e. plugged in almost 9-5 every day)?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 13 February 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

I did the Brasso trick back in December (it took forever), then got a case for it. It now has only vertical scratches from putting it in/taking it out of the case.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

Gareth explained to me how to add pictures for the music downloaded from slsk. So far, so good. But, now that my slsk music plays with pictures on the nano, the pictures from the music downloaded from the Apple store don't appear anymore. (Though all pictures still appaer in the little box to the left of iTunes. Explantions/ quick fixes?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

mine is scratched to hell, but i don't care. i still wuv it.
