So if it wasn't for ILXOR Colette and Toby wouldn't have met ?

But was the probability of Toby meeting Colette without ILXOR ? I expect a detailed analysis but Friday ;-)

Also Toby's maths expertise is needed on this ILM thread:

daerest Toby and Colette, may your planning not turn into the horrorshow mine did. Congrats! Do a destination wedding! That way, only people you really, really like will want to come.

wow, married!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

thanks everyone! it's pretty exciting now that everyone knows, although a bit strange to be able to talk about it all of the sudden.

i've gotten really good at telling friends that don't know. on sunday, at dinner with three people that knew and one that didn't (dinner was set to tell her, basically), i managed to get through almost the entire meal, with two conversations about weddings without telling her. my brilliant segue? 'oh yeah, i've got more to talk to my parents about on the phone lately, since we're getting married.' i'm so smooth.

ally, i think you're potentially right about mental family issues and planning. pretty much anywhere we plan it'll be a destination wedding for a majority of people, although my parents don't seem to understand why i don't think londoners would really like to spend a lot of time in kalamazoo. we'll see. it's slightly easier dealing with my-mom craziness over an ocean, but i think this will all take things up a notch.

anyway, yes, hopefully we can set a FAP at some point soon, since there have been several requests on email for one.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, I forgot about that somehow, despite knowing very well you're American. Trust me, I feel your pain (all but about 4 or 5 potential invitees to ours are no closer than a 4 hour train ride, most much farther), GOOD LUCK, find a dress first and you'll feel better about everything else!!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Just popping up to offer congratulations reprise from Saturday. Oh and Ally, Colette's mom is totally battling it out for pole position in the crazymom 500 along with ours.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha as long as Toby's mom isn't battling Tom's in that same race, maybe they'll all pull through...

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I imagine Tom's mom as an intimidating non-soccer mom Southern lady who says things like 'if you could do this one little thing for me, honey, I would feel so much better...' while stirring an Old-Fashioned with an attitude of ennui AND superior impatience. Bad call?

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Amazingly, yes though it's hard to describe exactly how. I shall say no more here though, as to not distract too severely from Toby and Colette.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

i don't mind, any chance to complain about my mom with an audience that understands is welcome!

luckily, toby's mom seems to be both sane and pleasantly interested while fairly removed from the wedding. i'm already dreading next summer when they all meet since i can imagine my mom talking so much that neither of toby's parents can get a word in edgewise.

the thing about dress shopping at this stage is that i think about all the things i've had go wrong with 'fancy' fabrics when stored in my closets (water damage, moth holes, etc), especially as it'll be stored for almost 2 years at this point, so i'm a bit wary of that. but it's still kind of fun to go into fancy stores and play dressup. i should actually probably trick suzy into coming dress shopping with me sometime, since i need fashion advice on dresses. my mom was no help...every dress i put on she said 'oh i LOVE that one. THAT's my favorite. you HAVE to get it.' and i'd say 'mom, you said that about the last twenty dresses. it's not your favorite, you have a 10-second memory'

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

My mom has been absolutely delightful about wedding planning, really. Which is good cos if she started doing her occasional vindictive must-have-attention dickshow stuff to compete, uugggggghhh. I would've called off the wedding and been halfway to Tijuana with a returned lesbian lifestyle by now, to spite all of them.

I always think, with regards to the dresses, it is best to make your initial trips either alone or with one friend, not with family members. Because family members are all insane! You could put on the most ridiculously ginzo nonsense and do your hair up crazy and they'll be like, "Oh so beautiful!" even though in reality you're purposefully putting on something hideous to test them. My mom took to sending me photos of dresses for a bit, all of them looked like ren faire nonsense so I told her to stop turning me into Liv Tyler and she did, I have yet to even show her the dress I bought actually (mental note: must do tonight before she bitches again.).

Kidnapping suzy and forcing her along is the best option.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I have no one to pay the ransom! Fuck! I'll just stand there and tell you whether the dress looks cheap or not until someone lets me out alive. Apparently it was clear that I had the shopping gene early: when I was five I rejected a pair of plaid wool trousers because a) whatever manufacturer had made them didn't bother to align the sections so they were not 'well-made' and b) they sucked. But half the battle is checking for decent craft skills in your dress designer.

What is also important is the DO NOT STICK THE BRIDESMAIDS IN UNFLATTERING PASTELS rule. A friend had to be the BM at another friend's wedding and it was only her reddish hair that saved her from the full horror of SEAFOAM GREEN.

I can so totally see Colette's mom being like that in the store. She's kinda like a blond non-soccer mom channeling Susan Sarandon in 'dappy' mode ( "He is so drug-free. Lance burns CLEAN!"). My mom is a cruel hybrid of Margie from Fargo and Marge Simpson. In tandem with my sister, however, it's as if Selma and Patty span the generations.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

surely the point of bridesmadaids is to inflict some kind of fashion horror on them.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Wow, lovely news! I highly recommend the married state (having been in it for all of, ooh, 3 months.) I hope you wear a tiara, colette. It's my one regret...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

yes, and there's the added fun shock in telling UK girls that in america, the bride picks out the (ugly) dress and then they have to pay for it themselves....mwah ha hah ha

(in the UK the bride pays for the dresses)

probably either no bridesmaids or, if there are any, just saying 'go buy a dress that's this color that you like' or something.

xpost-- thanks archel, i'll have to keep an eye out for a cool tiara, not a bad plan!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

styles do change quite a bit in wedding dresses, so concentrate more on what shapes you prefer/suit (unless you fancy taking sneak photos and getting the dress made for you) so that when you are ready to buy a dress you know straight away which ones will look good and which ones you wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

but I guess I'm teaching you to suck eggs... It helps to have in your mind what kind of wedding your having in general - so that the dress and everything else matches. i found a gorgeous lacy edwardian style dress that I absolutely coveted, but it was completely wrong for the wedding we'd decided on, so I was sensible and didn't get it.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

vicky, i think you're totally right, what kind of dress i get will depend on exactly what the event looks like. i thought we had it sorted out, but questions by my parents are making me concerned that our plan isn't workable, so we'll see.

i do know that strapless isn't for me, which eliminates about 70% of dresses out there.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I had the same thought, but as ours was an outside wedding I ended up with a strapless but with a fur shrug. Part of me wishes I'd made more of an effort to find the right dress, but it doesn't keep me awake at night!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Every time I see this thread title I feel like they're getting married RIGHT NOW. Can someone add "Over there!" between the two sentences?
