BT - do they do a service where you type in your PIN before you dial, then that call shows up in different bits of the bill?

I'm sure I remember someone saying that they do that, so that each person in a shared house can have their own bill, and it prevents arguments over the phone bill. We're just setting up a landline in our new shared house, and this would be SOOO handy.

Has anyone heard of this? Or did I dream it?

I think my housemate has this - or at least he has a PIN you have to dial before you can use the phone at all - but then again, he works for BT so he can have just about anything he wants on his phone line.

We used to have this with MERCURY back in the day. However, a good proportion of the calls came up untagged, owing to dishonesty and/or forgetfulness.

There's a service you get where you have to tap in a PIN to use the phone at all, but that doesn't seperate things out. I don't want the rigmarole that usually comes with shared phone lines.

Do you need a landline at all? usually the answer is, needing it for a computer. Why not get broadband, split the bill, and have everyone just use their mobiles? Less headache.

It can be hard to get broadband without a landline.

However, once you've got it I suppose you could all use some kind of fancy internet telephony service.

I misread you Kate, sorry.

I think once you've got a landline it's hard not to use it for calls.

Broadband is what we're getting it for yeh, although it WILL inevitably be used for phoning as well. I hope I don't have to rely on people's honesty.

In my experience, people are reasonably honest about the big multi-pound numbers that appear on the bill, and the remainder don't tend to add up to so much that it's worth doing anything other than just splitting them evenly.
