SC = M-Audio Firewire Solo you need 2 soundcards for monitoring/queuing you may be able to use the onboard sound for monitoring/queuing and the M-Audio for your line out.
If you want cheaper then check out the Edirol UA-20.

the platters are about the size of a jam lid.

i have one of those. it works...okay. i use traktor and don't have all the buttons assigned. the feeling of the box is a little cheap. it's worked for me fine, but i can easily see it breaking. it's a good starter thing, i think

Recently got something called Mixx - it's fairly good for a free program but unfortunately does not read AAC/Apple Lossless formats.
I have a stupid question -- the program has separate "headphone" controls, but how do you even have a separate headphone and speaker output on a computer? Or is that something you can only do with an interface?

You can do that if you have a soundcard that can split the channels.

I'll be using a macbook pro when I "DJ" for the first time in a couple weeks - I don't know if it has that or not.

So if I plug in, say, a simple usb to 1/8" audio adapter and run the speakers out of that and my headphones out of the headphone jack will that work or do I actually need a different soundcard?

The issue with the soundcard is being able to split the different audio sources, so even if you do what you said you may just have the same audio feed that's simultaneously coming out of the speakers. If you want to cue up/listen to another song at the same time you might need to get external usb soundcards that'll split the channels for you, like this.
However, I don't know what type of DJ'ing you're doing; if you're just fading from one song to another you can probably get by just looking at the waveform on your screen.
