Those are two different questions. Make your mind up you manboob.

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what is in a manhattan then o bartender anthony? Martini = gin = good. hmmm. i like most cocktails but obv. cannot drink the creamy ones. i like long island iced tea and MARGARITAS yummmmmm...

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hhahahahahahahahaha manboob. Hahahahahahahahahhaa. I had never used that word in that context and never seen how funny it was. Another nude years resolution is to be nicer to N. for although he is a meanie sometimes he can be very funny. Manboob. HahahahahhahahahahahhAHHAHAHAHAHhaahahhaa.

Try these for a few Manhattan recipes. The GIN MARTINI is superior though. Cooo look, an ABSINTHE MARTINI!

I got a bottle of Bombay Sapphire GIN for christmas!! Londoners are hereby invited round my house with a bottle of SPIRITS for a cocktail party. Or if you have a well stocked CABINET I will come round and drink yours. Nice rack heh, you manboobs.

Sarah, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martinis by a metric mile, because, as milady points out, they contain gin. Gin makes a man mean.

RickyT, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the wake of 9/11, Manhattans make my tonsils sad. So Martinis.

A friend of mine once went out with an insane American who cornered me at a party once and launched into a tirade about how martinis were ass and how he hated all the bastards who drank them in a kind of 'ooh - look at me - I'm in Swingers' kind of way. He was on a lot of medication and stuff, but still.

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did you call him a manboob?

RickyT, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, he was kind of violent.

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mixed drinks: classick. CLASSICK. As in classy yet sick. I can't smell it in your eyes. FEEL IT IN YER GAZE.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cosmopolitans, baby. Great drink.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love cosmos as well.

Samantha, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd choose a martini over a manhattan. And I know it's not proper, but I'd like a vodka martini, thanks. I used to make manhattans for my parents from the time I was a toddler. Two jiggers rye, one vermouth. Never liked them myself.

I'm all for sissy drinks: cosmos, apple martinis, sloe gin fizzes, Shirley Temples. I went through a malibu rum and grapefruit juice phase a few years ago, I think that's the last time I got really excited about an alcoholic beverage.

Arthur, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martinis.

Though Im on bottle #4 of my brothers wine collection so dont mine me. Fuck each of these bottles is more then I could seriously hope to drink in a night.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Manhattans. Simple, tasty, boozy. Good.

DavidM, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sidecars.

the pinefox, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For some stupid reason or other, I initially thought that this thread was "Mauritius vs. Manhattan." Why I would think so, I dunno. Which island is cooler?

Has anyone here been to Mauritius? Or know anything about Mauritius?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
You people are completely fucked in the head.

Manhattans = YUM.
Gin Martinis = Sorta Yum.
Vodka Martinis = Yuck.
Fruity Martinis = For Trashy Hos.

Bourbon is for real men. Like me!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a Manhattan?

Is a Martini just some Martini poured from the bottle into the glass?

Is a Vodka Martini just some vodka added to the poured Martini (from a bottle into the glass)?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

A Manhattan is.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No; martini (proper) is gin + vermouth. Vodka martini is vodka + vermouth. MartiniTM is a brand of vermouth, and gross.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil basically nails the hierarchy for me. But I'd probably put Manhattans and gin Martinis on more of an equal plane. I oscillate between favoring one over the other, usually for a couple months at a time.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I ask for a Manhattan or a Martini in a pub in Glasgow?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Manhattans are OK. A proper Martini is a fine drink, but not as nice as neat ice cold gin poured over two eighhts of lime and two ice cubes. I am nobbut a ho to Madame Geneva

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

'Neat ice cold gin poured over two eights of lime and two ice cubes'.

Sorry, just had to have that said again.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that confused me as well.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

eighths of lime, as in two of the parts produced when you half a lime two ways

two cubes because add too much ice and you dilute the gin

sorry for tricksiness

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil's is almost my hierarchy but I like vodka better than gin

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

definately no shaking or I will kill you. Why make the decision. Vermouth sould be Noilly Prat. As winston churcill said to make a good martini simply whisper vermouth into the glass and add gin.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

half a lime three ways!

I should go to bed

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. I agree with RickyT. He is a genius of drinks minimalism.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ps, don't drink martini after 8 pints of ordinary, it will furque you urrp. ooh me head in advance for tomorrow like.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I ask for a Martini / Manhattan in a pub in Glasgow?! Or just in bars?! Are there any bars in Glasgow?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure you could ask for one at a pub, but I'm guessing that the odds of getting a well-mixed one aren't in your favor

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricardo, it was just the "neat" and then "ice" and "lime" that confused me.

kirsten (kirsten), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I just don't want a well-glassed face.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Just drink long vodkas, Cozen.

kirsten (kirsten), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)
