Name my dog

My GF and I have acquired a dog from our local homless mutts shelter. She's about two years old, grey, and of no particular breed. Looks a bit like a bedraggled schnauser (sp), and is about 18 inches tall. Slightly skatty, but not in a mentally ill way.

Anyway, we need to think of a name for her. The people at the shelter had been calling her Pepsi, but there's no way we're going with that. Nobody knows what she was called before she was rescued this summer.

Current thinking is Laika (after the Russian spacedog rather than the British electropopsters), but we're open to suggestions.

Go wild...

Not that wild, though.

Heh, Laika is what I'd name my dog if I ever get another.

Do you dislike Pepsi because of the brand associations, or because of how it sounds?

call your dog 'l33t'

Cos I'd feel like a muppet standing in the middle of Wandsworth common shouting "Pepsi! Pepsi!" like some demented salesman.

It's perhaps worth noting that we already have two cats called Belle and Sebastian, so the dog's name should avoid tweeness.

BTW, I'd like to apologise for my spelling in the thread header. Not sure what came over me...

I favour a two-syllable name for a dog, preferably ending in a vowel sound. Having had to stand around calling many dogs in my life, I've found that these are the names that sound least stupid and produce best results. My dogs are called Milo and Cody (Cody was already named when we got him). So Laika would suit me. But if I had a bitch I would call her Rizzo. I used to have a dog called Layla, or Layla-Payla-Best-Girl to give her her full title.

If I ever get a dog, it will be called Tufty. I decided this years ago, but still haven't got around to owning one.

my roommate recently took in a stray cat and had been calling it "pumpkin", i was pretty upset with how rancid the cat's shits were though so I decided to bring things a bit over the top and name her Pumpkin Fire Meadow or PFM for brevity. That was mostly to upset the people that brought her in but it's sort of caught on by now... you should do something like that.

I recommend avoiding giving pets names that could belong to humans. My mother does this and it drives me nuts. Her dogs are Daisy, Gracie, Leo, Sammie, Katie, and Hank. She talks to people about them, and they think she means her children, not dogs.

So, name her for a favorite tool, or toy, or game, or foodstuff, or book, or color, or song, or something like that.

How dare you not go with Pepsi; our dog was called Pepsi, though we got her in 1986 and this was to do with Pepsi and Shirley rather than the refreshing soft drink of the same name.
