Cleveland and Pittsburgh were ranked highest for U.S. cities.
I really want to see the science behind this. Granted my perspective is a bit skewed on Vancouver, as I was just there this past weekend taking part in a party that didn't need to be, theoretically, all hush-hush, and was spitting distance east of the Carmegeddon area of E Hastings St. in downtown. (Then again, Vancouver is the city I'd second want to most live in -- mainly due to familiarity and proximity to family. So I have to be fair.)
Also, any survey claiming "low threat of terrorism" as a factor is just full of shit. Canada may not have provided troops to the Iraq War -- or if so, very little, but there's no such thing as a major Western World city that can be predicted as a lower/higher threat of terrorism. (Also, tell that to the people who can only afford to live in north-west Surrey)
But this and the 2010 Winter Olympics will surely make lower mainland B.C. real estaters skipping with excitement!

House/appt. burglaries are everyday stories, sadly. You kinda need an alarm system if you plan to live in Vancouver and own a large collection of music, and want it to stay large.

Vancouver is weird. It's pretty and all but everyone's way too segregated and laid-back for super special things to happen. I mean I love the Organ but they are signed to that low-budget-Jesus-lookin ass fool Chad Kroeger's label, Black Mountain is awesome but then they tour with Coldplay and all their interview questions are about Coldplay. All the up-and-coming bands aren't considered made until they get a good Pitchfork review (seriously, that's a huge barometer here). The city needs to get raped quick so that's where I come in.

Also, I was a little harsh on Calgary upthread. I'm sorry. I know that I should stop judging everything by 1997 standards. And 1997 wasn't even that bad. I had some good times. And these days, there are actually a lot of really good bands in Calgary: The Cape May, Falconhawk, that other one...

Calgary is just plain depressing, though the area along the Bow downtown is nice. Too much concrete, too many scary cookie cutter suburbs. It's nice that they're close to the mountains and they have a few old buildings downtown, though nothing in comparison to Winnipeg. Thanks to our "raging urban ghetto" and October snowstorms we probably ranked pretty far down.

monocle's list of 25 cities has vancouver at 14. i learned it has 120 starbucks and mountains and "too many bad condo developments and mundane retail outlets." hot damn.
i'm moving there at the end of the month. i want to know, if i'm going to be spending a lot of time at ubc, how far away can i live and still get there without much hassle (via public transit)? can i find an apartment in kitsilano or granville island for under $1500? is granville island an actual island?

I was just in Vancouver recently and left terribly unimpressed. The downtown is extremely crowded and expensive but lacks anything of real interest. The people in the city are overall very weird, but in a bad way. It's beautiful but lacks anything really worth seeing. Even the "cool" areas -- Main St, Commercial Drive -- have way better counterparts in most US cities.
― Reatards Unite, Monday, 3 August 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)
Visit from time to time and think it's one of the best cities anywhere. Unequalled combination of great Chinese food and natural beauty. OK, I guess equalled or bettered in these respects by San Francisco. Unequalled combination of great Chinese food, natural beauty, and the metric system.

It's going to be interesting to see whether or not there are many arrests made or charges laid from all this activity. I keep seeing stuff like "Hope you get raped in jail ASSHOLE!" on these photos of "rioters" (CBC kept calling them "protesters" last night, WTF?), many of them are just posing beside the chaos. The footage is remarkable for the thousands of cameras, phones and folks just vogueing for photos. I mean, look at that pic of the azn dude with the hockey stick in front of the smashed windows. He probably just picked that thing off the ground and posed for like 4 seconds for the photo then peacefully strolled off. Assuming that's his story then there's going to be a lot of people really upset because there's no way that photo will bring him a gang-raping in priz.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/17/vancouver-kiss-couple-riot-police
The image of the couple lying in the street seemingly locked in a kiss as the Vancouver hockey riots erupted around them has become an internet sensation, but the pair may not have been in the throes of a passionate embrace after all. After the photo was tweeted and carried on news sites around the world, people have come forward to offer a less romantic explanation of the image, taken by the Canada-based photojournalist Richard Lam.William, a witness, told the Vancouver Sun the couple were run over by two riot police officers: "The girl who was knocked over landed head first on the pavement with her boyfriend landed partially on top of her," he said. "She was in visible pain, crying, but the two officers gave them a parting shove and moved on. Bystanders went to make sure she was OK."Another angle of the photo, which the Vancouver Sun reports was sent in by several readers, appears to support William's version of events.Meanwhile, a woman has contacted the Australian website 9News to claim she is the sister of the man in the photograph, whom she names as 29-year-old Scott Jones, from Perth. Hannah Jones said Scott had been living and working in Vancouver for six months. She told 9news that lots of his friends had left messages on his Facebook page and he had posted a reply saying: "Classic! This was shortly after the riot police run over the top of us and naturally Alex needed some comforting."

Video surfaces of "kissing couple"
You know that romantically making out couple at the Vancouver protests the other week? Wasn't so sweet after all. Wasn't staged, either, unfortunately. New video shows the couple just before the photo was shot, and that lovely kiss was in fact a visibly upset Alexandra Thomas being comforted by Scott Jones, after riot cops beat and kicked her while she lay supine on the ground. Despicable.

Anyone who doesn't see how these relatively mild, pleasant hockey riots are assiduously managed by law enforcement techniques and who thinks, even for a second, that there was any danger to much of anything, is a boring Vancouverite. No serious injuries. A few cars toppled. A bunch of bros posting "We'll Help in the Clean-Up Effort 2011" shit on Facebook. Yeah. Boring, boring Vancouver.
