DAEREST ART STUDENT, FUCK YOU

hi, my g/f is doing a art project, a mail art project, as follows:

"What I'm looking for is your favourite swear/rude/dirty word.
If you could write it on a piece of paper and put it in the post that
would be amazing. Sadly I really do want it handwritten (but in any form/size/style you feel appropriate) but not typed or over the email (unless you're really clever and can scan it in, but must be 300dpi)."

i was going to email people i 'engage with' regularly but ech, anyone'll do. so email me a scan or to ask for a mailing addy if you feel like taking part in somethig beautiful.

Ooh, I'd like to do this!

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Happy to oblige. This email works. Sure you're not trying to bombard your girlfriend with filth to satisfy some sick urge?

beanz (beanz), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Got it. Excellent! I'll come up with something good.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll do it. This email works.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

What a shit project.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

well, this time around the tutors urged her to be 'more superficial' after the last project turned a little theoretical, but i'm not really sure what will be done with these swears.

N_RQ (Enrique), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Forwarded-on in some kind of chain-main horror.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

dump her now by way of cultural protest.

brian sewell (jaybob3005), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

eh? @ daniel

brian, i'll have to know what the project is really about first. i think it has some relation to 'design rhetoric' but lord knows how.

N_RQ (Enrique), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

email sent

Matt (Matt), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ (Enrique), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Matt (Matt), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

glad to hear it was superficial enough for them.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

hahaha indeed. they said she shd do a phd, following this.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

was it just people's words on paper all pinned on a wall/board?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

i actually don't know. it involved drilling, so i guess not.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

now i'm interested and would really like to know.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Photos, please!

Control your ponies, children! (kate), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

photos would mean breaking one of my internet rules, alas (plus dunno how).

the drilling was done for the binding of the books. i did the drilling. but the swears were just part of a bigger project which involved a bunch of other stuff including me buying nuts, and the g/f devising a language made out of glyphs derived from photos of items of clothing.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Hooray!

To whom should I post abuse now?

beanz (beanz), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

conor mcnichols

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Well he's printed less articulate letters

beanz (beanz), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

There is an art student assembling a giant yellow duck on a rockinghorse-style base in the car park opposite my work.

(selected only non-noizeboard search result for "art student", cz I don't know if giant yellow ducks are noize, but it is kind of awesome)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 18 June 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

If I felt a little braver I wd go up and ask about the ~~~significance of the piece~~~ but art students presumably still think that office workers are the enemy and wd roll their eyes mightily at bored office workers twitching their curtains at their art project construction and asking them tiresome non-arty questions.

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 18 June 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

You should post a photo – it sounds right up my alley.

to which the only response is to continue ".... i'm only asking because i saw someone else do exactly the same thing in [next town over] last week"

Remember when Mr Banhart was a replicant? (darraghmac), Friday, 18 June 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

haha "I'm only asking because they've got one in Bicester village and i was wondering if it was, like, a marketing thing"

gin bunny (c sharp major), Friday, 18 June 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

tbh like 90% of art students I've known (and I've known many) would be like "holy shit awesome a member of the ~public~ wants to ~engage~ with my work!"

which could be a bit annoying but is much better than the expected "stay away foul wage slave" imo

spacecadet, what city is this?

Excuse 6-days-lateness and bad cellphone pic:
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9118/rockingduck.jpg

It turned out to be something to do with this (degree project art show):
http://www.ruskin-sch.ox.ac.uk/events/post/ruskin_degree_show/
but sadly I don't think there are pics or an explanation of the duck on the site (still am none the wiser on the explanation part)

(Hi I am in Oxford, UK)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

explanations are for coroners

plax (ico), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

it depends on the artwork

sarahel, Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well personally I think a giant yellow rocking duck in a blue hat is sufficiently rad as to require no explanation, but I was rather imagining that its creator would tell me it symbolised some kind of conceptual dichotomy

then again maybe it was just something to sit children on while their parents looked round the degree show

(if scale is unclear, the 4 white legs underneath its middle are a chair that was wedged under it to stop it rocking)

By my work right now -- no, those aren't Andy Warhol's brillo boxes, they're Mike Bidlo's replication of Andy Warhol's brillo boxes. HI I THOUGHT OF STUFF LIKE THAT WHEN I WAS 18. NOT INTERESTING.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

Mike Bidlo's a veteran of that line of work--I don't know what he still aims to get out of those Brillo boxes, but some of his other work--his explorations into Duchamp yielded some interesting results. That was a while ago though.
