who are you and what have you done with blind date?

so the new season of one of my favorite programs, BLIND DATE, started last week. and now it has a new tagline -- 'relationships just got a whole lot funnier' -- and a format change: the first date of the show (or sometimes the whole show) has a 'twist,' whether it's parents picking their daughter's date or two married people looking to rekindle their spark. also the dates have all been chopped up, time-wise -- instead of fitting snugly between two commercial breaks, they are now spread out so people 'get hooked' and stay on the channel while lavalife and cortaslim ads show.

i mean, it was an undeniable format -- put two people together and watch what happens! and now it's all mucked up by speed dating sessions and marriage proposals and 'introductions' by the cartoon therapist and the producer and and and ... boooo. it's just completely off.

also they got rid of the hall of shame!! wtf.

i loved BLIND DATE because it was a bit hokey, reality-show-wise -- it wasn't as guaranteed-slutty as ELIMIDATE or any of those other 'compete for your supper' shows, and it actually did have some funny moments (the one time when the completely drunk chick in cabo san lucas threatened to put out a hit on her date sticks out).

(please tell me i am not the only person who watches this show, even though it's on at 4 am here in new york now. it's bad enough that this market doesn't get CHEATERS.)

oh man, i'm so sorry to hear this. i haven't watched dating shows in quite a while but i used to swear by them. i overdosed, i think. blind date was always fast-paced enough to be enjoyable; the producers were cruel enough to make some terrible matches for our entertainment, but not so cruel that they didn't genuinely try sometimes to have people get along. the date scenarios were so weird, and the cartoon comments were sometimes snarky enough to be hilarious. rip hall of shame.

I miss Blind Date.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

is 'love on a saturday night' really 'blind date', but with davina?

N_RQ, Friday, 7 October 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Damn, this is bad news indeed. Blind Date is the only reality show I ever really enjoyed.

you are indeed all nuts

This is the equivalent of saying, "Hmm, this ice cream is pretty popular but it's missing something... and I've got just the thing: FECES!"

When I read this thread title I immediately thought:

1. quincie
2. had sex with it

I have to admit, when I was a student, I was one of those annoying ironic students who watched Blind Date because it was rubbish.

Parents picking their daughter as a date – now that's a twist.

"TONS AND TONS OF RANCID FECES ALL OVER YOUR ICE CREAM! Isn't that great???"

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

p.s. i'm guessing this thread is about the US version of blind date which i believe has a totally different format to the UK one.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

i.e. it's still on the telly

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

some people think roger lodge is sexy.

I'm pissed that they changed the format, but maybe they had already gone as far as they could go? After that episode at the Ted Nugent gig where the chick took her top off? And every second episode had a woman falling over in the toilet or puking out the taxi after getting mightily tanked. I'll miss it though.

OK, American Blind Date was certainly very different to Cilla's.

Usually I'm the first person to decry ironic enjoyment. But sometimes, there is such a thing as "so bad it's awesome", and I think Blind Date falls into that category.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen Blind Date is over 3 years, yet am still sad to hear this news of format change. It really was awesome as it was, especially with all the booze pushing. (I mean, it's in LA, they're on a blind date with paid-for food and drinks, and have a guaranteed free ride home in a car that's waiting for them? Who wouldn't get tanked?! Entertain me!)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

its all about the mexican blind date called BUSCANDO AMOR with NATALIA as the host.. yum!

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

UK Blind Date was hilarious. Instead of vapid L.A. types who struggle to hold a conversation they got these painfully shy Brits from tiny towns, who at the end of the show would be like "I think I might try to hold her hand."

I have always wanted to see Roger Lodge get filmed on a blind date. See how HE likes it. Just kidding, WE LOVE YOU LODGE ROGERS.
