Remember when we did this with albums on ILM, way back when? Oh, the fun we had.

So, uhm, yeah, my taste is pretty canonical, americanocentric and often just plain boring. Sue me, I got into movies late. Also, whenever I couldn't find a movie for a certain year, I used a Disney flick (which I have seen, and which are almost always worthwile.) Some choices for recent years may be off, as I chose those based on when they came to Portugal, not when they were released.

Just doing this to get the ball rolling, you see.

I...just...can't do this

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

i think you're off,, except for 1977.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I can't do this either. I'd need to see at least 10,000 more movies before feeling like it would be worth it.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure there are many years before 1970 in which no films I've ever seen have been produced.

Ow, that sentence was a complete headfuck to write, grammatically speaking. I still don't think I got it right.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

It makes sense. Sort of.
Also, it's so hard to choose within one year. Some years have loads of good films & others are dead.

Also, it's so hard to choose within one year. Some years have loads of good films & others are dead.

Years I found hardest to choose from: 1959 ("Les Quatre Cent Coups", "Breathless"), 1961 ("Yojimbo" and "Cape Fear") and 1968 ("Baisers Volées", "Bonnie & Clyde", "Planet Of The Apes", "2001")

i think you're off,, except for 1977.

So you like obsessive, agressive Bunuel, but not whimsical, surrealistic Bunuel?

Actually, replace Papillon with The Wicker Man.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Saturday, 8 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

you can view best-of year-by-years on both IMDB (longer, vote-based) and AMG (shorter, critical). the lists are relatively similar. now everyone will view these lists and all of the lists posted here will look just like the IMDB/AMG lists!

Wow, it's awesome that CWWDTKATT enjoys both the original "Pass"(1934) AND all the re-makes.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 9 October 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

i personally prefer the spooky spaghetti vibe of sergio leone's "pass" (1970) to the endless cokehead twittering of robert altman's "pass" (1978).

So, uhm, yeah, my dick is pretty canonical, americanocentric and often just plain boring. Sue me, I got laid late. Also, whenever I couldn't find a dick for a certain year, I used a Disney dildo (which I have seen, and which are almost always worthwile.) Some choices for recent dicks may be off, as I chose those based on when they came in Portugal, not when they were released.

nice '88 choice

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

So I am doing this right now (only from '60 onward, fuck event that is a chore and I'm shocked how often there is really only one clear pick--and Morbius has already chosen it haha.) Will post once I figure out late 70s choices.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Three question marks mean that if someone can suggest a better movie I'll probably switch it out cuz honestly I'm not totally sold on my own pick, but I couldn't figure out a movie I liked more (my 1992 pick is particularly amusing haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Three question marks mean that if someone can suggest a better movie I'll probably switch it out cuz honestly I'm not totally sold on my own pick

1979: All That Jazz (Bob Fosse) (???)

Nope. That's pretty much the right pick.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I almost had Star 80 for '83. That was a good year. At least three very legit choices.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't wanna think about the year I last saw All That Jazz, so I ain't saying. (but my guilt at picking a faux-Sirk and no Sirks feels absolved by Fellini-less lists with ATJ)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I like the Fellini-esque parts of All That Jazz more than I like Fellini's own films though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

well, I figured. Amarcord and Nights of Cabiria? I'm not wild about the phantasmagoric work of FF myself.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've been able to watch a Fellini film all the way through, but I will admit to be rather young the last time I tried. I will give those two a shot though. I've been thinking I need to give Bergman a chance too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

How are you guys making these lists?! Even trying to start is giving a massive headache.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha I took Morbius' list (I knew that esp. for the 60's he'd picked most of my favs) and pasted it into excel and then went through the my Netflix ratings and pasted fav movies into each year. When I finished with Netflix, I went to IMDB and checked BAFTA, Cannes, Oscars, etc, for a few straggly years and to just generally double-check stuff I was uncertain on.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I've got a spreadsheet at home of every movie I've seen since I was 13, so technically I could do this, although I'm not sure it would be very impressive, since there's only about 800 movies on there and the majority of them are from the last 15 years.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I've rated more movies on Netflix than you've seen!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

PRETORIOUS? There's no such name! PRETORIOUS?

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

1986 was the hardest year to pick, I think. Variously Something Wild, Mona Lisa, and Bette Blue occupied that year and I'm still not sure I made the right choice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

nope, because you forgot this one, the centerpiece of my list:
http://www.film.org.pl/images/carpenter/big%20trouble%20in%20little%20china.jpg

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Haha I did forget that one, but I don't rate it as much as the other four flicks.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

NO CARPENTER NO CREDIBILITY

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I'll just list my favorites in Alex's question-marked years:

2000: Platform
1996: Irma Vep (or Goodbye, South, Goodbye)
1992: La Sentinelle (Or Bad Lieutenant)
1991: Actress
1986: Sherman's March
1984: Love Streams (or Stranger than Paradise)
1979: Wise Blood
1978: Killer of Sheep
1973: F for Fake
1970: The Conformist (or Scenes from Under Childhood)

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Oooh I've always wanted to see the Conformist. Is that on DVD?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

:( No

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

You might like Fellini's I Vitelloni too... a hair too laddish for me (like Diner in b&w without the Colts quiz). And all those '86 films are interesting train wrecks. :)

btw The Hustler = Robert ROSSEN

My list came from iMdb, memory, Eric's, and having zip to do at work so far this week. Ah, the cycles of publishing...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Haha dammit I tried to type directors from memory. There must be some terrible spelling about too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Oooh I've always wanted to see the Conformist. Is that on DVD?

SF didn't get the travelling revival?

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

It did and I missed it :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Even if it were available, I would seriously recommend waiting for a print! (I mean, moreso than even most things [if I had made an original list, I would've put question marks next to it]).

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

anyone who doesn't love 'the court jester' is too cool for me!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
For 1984 I remembered that Streetwise came out that year and it's better than Broadway Danny Rose.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember Streetwise having a song as good as "Agita / My goombah / In the bonzo."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's not a funny.

The fascinating thing about this thread, to me, is how our tastes are all quite different but then loop back around certain films or years or genres. I have been checking DVDs out of the library right and left based on recommendations from youse guys.

two months pass...
Weird thing: Robert Altman movies land in the runner-up slot extremely often.

1971: McCabe & Mrs. Miller just behind The Act of Seeing...
1973: The Long Goodbye just behind The Wicker Man
1975: Nashville just behind Barry Lyndon
1977: 3 Women just behind A Grin without a Cat
2003: The Company just behind Elephant

Short Cuts is pretty far out in front of Carlito's Way.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

And yet you've got Popeye four color codes behind The Shining. (man, Altman wins on every score there for me, esp in giving Shelley something to do besides catanonia followed by weeping)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

No one loves "A bout de Souffle" :(

JTS (JTS), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

2003: The Company just behind Elephant

Love for The Company warms me.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Popeye probably ought to be blue. But The Shining will never be less than orange.

That's hard to do. I've got a few years here where I became impatient trying to find something I loved, so I settled for something I liked (e.g., The Quiet Man). I'll start in '41:

1941 – Citizen Kane
1942 – The Magnificent Ambersons
1943 – Shadow of a Doubt
1944 – Double Indemnity
1945 – Scarlet Street
1946 – The Big Sleep
1947 – T-Men
1948 – Red River
1949 – White Heat
1950 – All About Eve
1951 – A Streetcar Named Desire
1952 – The Quiet Man
1953 – Roman Holiday
1954 – On the Waterfront
1955 – Pather Panchali
1956 – The Harder They Fall
1957 – Sweet Smell of Success
1958 – Touch of Evil
1959 – Les Quatre Cents Coups
1960 – Tirez sur le pianiste
1961 – Il Posto
1962 – Advise and Consent
1963 – Hud
1964 – Bande à part
1965 – The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
1966 – Masculin, féminin
1967 – To Sir with Love
1968 – Rosemary’s Baby
1969 – Midnight Cowboy
1970 – Goin’ Down the Road
1971 – McCabe & Mrs. Miller
1972 – The Godfather
1973 – American Graffiti
1974 – The Godfather II
1975 – Nashville
1976 – All the President’s Men
1977 – Saturday Night Fever
1978 – Straight Time
1979 – The China Syndrome
1980 – Raging Bull
1981 – Blow Out
1982 – Fast Times at Ridgemont High
1983 – Heart Like a Wheel
1984 – Comfort and Joy
1985 – Lost in America
1986 – Blue Velvet
1987 – Broadcast News
1988 – Married the Mob
1989 – Casualties of War
1990 – Goodfellas
1991 – Boyz n the Hood
1992 – Reservoir Dogs
1993 – Menace II Society
1994 – Crumb
1995 – Smoke
1996 – Fargo
1997 – Jackie Brown
1998 – Boogie Nights
1999 – The Virgin Suicides

Anything to avoid marking stories by 11-year-old that often aren't really stories.
