the skinny:

jennifer weiner chick lit novel goes chick flick with cameron diaz, toni collette and shirley maclaine in the big screen adaptation.

my analysis:

this movie transcends "chick flick" into the realm of "totally fucking awesome". if you did not bawl your eyes out when maggie reads elizabeth bishop to the blind english professor then YOU ARE A MONSTER ROBOT.

furthermore, i predict no one will be able to eat a meal at the jerk hut because the place will be constantly booked up with private parties.

It looks kinda dreadful, but then I LOATHE Cameron Diaz.

i dont like cameron diaz either and found her fantastic in this movie. loved the homage to courtney love in the beginning.

homage to courtney love

Single-handedly guaranteeing that I shall do all that is humanly possible to avoid catching even the fleetingest glimpse of this pile of rancid offal masquerading as a film.

YOU ARE A MONSTER ROBOT

Wait, in some corners this is considered a compliment.

yup, you've missed the point.

hm this was directed by Curtis Hanson!

gear (gear), Saturday, 8 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

then again, L.A. Confidential was sort of weak overall.

gear (gear), Saturday, 8 October 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

but I did like Wonder Boys.

i went in expecting this movie to blow but you know what? it didnt.

YOU ARE A GURL

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 8 October 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I want to see this movie. But maybe by myself. I AM A GURL, it's true. As if to prove it, I watched Uma on Oprah today and now want to see that movie too (Prime, I think.) Oh. Must make up for it by going to see DOOM asap.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 8 October 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm a gurl but i think this movie looks like it would be deeply awful. that could be because of my irrational dislike of cameron diaz of course.

gem (trisk), Saturday, 8 October 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

does cameron diaz wear hooker shoes through the whole thing? because maybe that will make me see it. Oh wait, my wife will make me see it regardless. oh well.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 8 October 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

And the book was so "meh" too -- it didn't even make good holiday reading.
If I had to see it, it would be for Toni Collette, but THAT'S IT.

DEAR JENNIFER WEINER PLZ FORGET HOW TO WRITE K THX BYE

maura (maura), Saturday, 8 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

(although i guess you could say that she never really knew how to write in the first place)

maura (maura), Saturday, 8 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

maura, so much jealousy. tsk, tsk. "in her shoes" is the only good book weiner ever wrote! everything else is pretty unspectacular.

i know im a "girl" and im predetermined to like this -- i mean, i have a rather large movie collection of films deemed "chick flick" but its pretty much for amusement or there's some sort of commentary to be gleaned. [im TA-ing a class next semester that finally allows me to break these films out and wax academic on them. so fucking excited.]

"in her shoes" hit me in the gut, unlike other films where i usually laugh or study it. im just saying its better than i expected. thats all.

the amount of hating on this thread almost made me think i was reading a philly messageboard.

My friend and I are having lunch today and we are then going to see this one. I can hardly wait!

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Saturday, 8 October 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

maura, have you read her blog?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'm jealous because she is the Official Overweight Chick Writer and she's not good! i read the first chapter of 'in her shoes' and wanted to throw it across the room, but it was online.

maura (maura), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

"in her shoes" was allright, but the bit when the obnoxious character from "good in bed" shows up, i wanted to hurl the book across the room

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

and no, rosemary, i haven't read her blog in a while. i'm trying to cut down on reading blogs by people whose writing annoys me. so far it's working, and i'm actually in a much better mood than i have been in a while!

maura (maura), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

it's awesome when people hate on stuff stuff and other people accuse them of jealousy. it's even better when it's girls though. it means our plot is working.

strng hlkngtn: what does it mean? (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 October 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

and clearly hollywood has taken a brave step letting "the fat one" come to the big screen
