My workplace has taken on a new Norwegian client so we are currently seeking a Norwegian speaker (to do the same job as myself for a substancially larger amount of money when they could just send me on a Learn Norwegian In Five Days Course grumble grumble).

One of my colleagues is off to Norway to meet with the clients next week and we are all at a loss as to what he can do in his spare time if he gets any while over there.

Norway. What does it have to offer?

Does your company really need a norwegian speaker?! My dad did a job in Norway once, with lots of different european contractors, and the common language was English. He was over there for about three months, in the middle of nowhere, and when he went into town for a haircut, even the hairdresser had perfect english.

Booze is very very expensive, and the sale of it, outside bars and restaurants is controlled. Where is it they'll be going? If it's outside of the main towns, the countryside is truly breathtaking.

I found the Showcase Showdown completely by accident. Once upon a time, long after the demise of the Channel and the Rat, I stumbled into the downstairs room at the Middle East, and there before me lay a scene I'd thought had been lost to history. Down in front there were 200 kids looking as if they'd just stepped out of the cast party for Sid & Nancy. The knew all the words, especially to the catchiest song the band played, which had the absurdist chorus "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you . . . fuck you Norwaaaaaay." It seemed so randomly malignant. The singer looked amused by the whole thing -- the song, the kids shouting along earnestly. I couldn't believe they were from Boston.

The countryside in Norway is very beautiful, it almost seems hyperreal, like an idealized painting or Nordic tourist kitsch; Oslo has a cool castle overlooking the harbor that is definitely worth an afternoon. Food and drink is breathtakingly expensive. There is a great metal scene but when you go to the heavy metal record stores you realize that things are actually cheaper back at home (at least compared to the black metal sections at Aquarius or Amoeba).

A drunken man, wearing a hat with the inscription "Long live May 17th" was brought in for questioning, but was eventually released because he was not able to explain himself.

I love this.

The commanders had to find a way to dissolve the crowd. Eventually, they found an old clause from 1685, stating that revolt was illegal. Had this first been read out loud, people would have to retreat inside.

A man was then sent to the square with the task of reading the clause out loud. But he was not very tall, and he was ignored completely.

This is my favourite part.

Julius Andreas Gimli Arn MacGyver Chewbacka Highlander Elessar-Jankov

According to Norwegian site VG Nett, bus driver Andreas Jankov has formally changed his name to Julius Andreas Gimli Arn MacGyver Chewbacka Highlander Elessar-Jankov. "I wanted to show that it is possible to be serious and at the same time take the name you like," said the film enthusiast. "I wanted to see how far I could take it with respect to the number of names. I started thinking about this three years ago and it was approved in January this year." Apparently, he's had his passport and bank card reissued, but the name was too long so he dropped "Highlander."

Thanks to our commenters, we've been able to break down the name:

- Julius is an homage to the famous chimp at the Kristiansand Zoo
- 'Arn' is a Swedish knight movie
- Elessar and Gimli are from 'Lord of the Rings'
- 'MacGyver', just the greatest Richard Dean Anderson show ever!
- 'Highlander' could refer to either the movie or TV show
- Chewbacka (aka Chewbacca) is from 'Star Wars'

So, When/If he gets married will he make his wife take his name?

'Slow but noble televison' form the land of the midnight Hongro

Le petit chat est mort (Tom D.), Saturday, 16 February 2013 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, this 'thing' started with a real-time broadcast of the relatively scenic West-East railway from Bergen to Oslo (about 6-7 hours) and took off when the traditional cruise line traveling up and down the coast of Norway got their 24/7, 134-hour live show. It was some sort of phenomenon and people followed its stops and went to great lengths to be there when it arrived, and to watch the whole thing, but at the same time it was basically just a screensaver or romantic nationalism getting way too many hours on a sub-channel of the national broadcaster NRK (and sometimes o NRK1). Last year they did the same with the Telemark canal boat.

I guess all the good scenic routes were used and they had to come up with something new. Paint drying special coming up.

abcfsk, Saturday, 16 February 2013 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

... we've already done paint drying on British TV

It's perhaps worth noting that one of the best-selling books in Norway recently has been about firewood. How to chop and stack and dry it, plus some crap about the goddamn soul and tradition of burning firewood.

Kinda like that recent American book about artisan pencil-sharpening, minus any level of irony whatsoever. The practical chapters ARE quite useful, I should add.
