Is men's cologne sexy? what colognes do you like on a guy? what cologne's do you like on a girl? is drakkar noir all it's cracked up to be?

Mandee, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like men's cologne. i don't like perfume either. i just get weak at the knees at the smell of a healthy armpit...mmmm

di, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perfume on a woman is ok, but not in the office.

Cologne on a man at any time is as dud as dud can get.

Sean, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud, dude. Perfumes and colognes drive me up the wall because smelling them in public is like having red hot chili peppers up my nose. I have an awfully sensitive olfactory get-up, and any over- scented bozo in a subway (or, for that matter, the cleaning fluids aisle of any supermarket) sends my nasal passages into a frenzy of sneezeless irritation.

Funny, though -- I like scented candles. I can handle them AS LONG AS they're the fancy ones made from beeswax and not the petroleum-based crap Glade makes. The stuff you get from card stores usually suck, too, and smell absolutely vile at that.

I usually have no problem with flowers, either, now that I think on it.

Michael Daddino, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, no, for goodness' sakes no. It was invented in the days when people never washed: nowadays we can wash and so cologne has come to the end of its usefulness. Mind you I said exactly the same about perfume and got shouted down then.

Tom, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it because: smell - I believe this at least as a metaphor for how smell works - smell is not mediated by the frontal cortex, as the other senses are, but goes straight to the 'reptile' brain, the old brain at the top of your spine. So memories and sensations evoked by smell are more immediate than those evoked by the other senses. And, I think it's true that if someone smells consistently the same, and the smell is easy to recognise, it's good - only if they always smell the same - and provided you want to see them, that is. When they're away, you might smell the same cologne on someone else, and remember them.

(But, I know that most people have a serious dislike for cologne, so I wouldn't exactly recommend wearing it as a pick-up kind of thing.)

maryann, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cologne is ok, as long as it is not the stuff that smells like distilled skunk piss (aramis)

Menelaus Darcy, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

most people have a serious dislike for cologne

No they don't. Bloody hippies.

Q: is cologne just a synonym for perfume/after shave

N., Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An aunt of mine got me Calvin Kline Contradiction, it's in a nice container. I doubt if I shall use it often, I was thinking, as it has a spray action, I will use it on jumpers and jeans that have been worn a little too often without washing. My sister says this is not a good thing to do.

w all due respect that thread title is bs

deej, Saturday, 1 March 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

why does classy babes never want guys to wear cologne?

I love it wearing it, but never do b/c I'm self-conscious, or too conscious about how people feel about it. (Although I suspect they're not always being honest with themselves on this issue.)

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 1 March 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

they shouldnt notice unless they are all up on you

deej, Saturday, 1 March 2008 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

then you have a situation where action has been initiated without help from cologne, but could be halted due to the cologne. not good stratgy.

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 1 March 2008 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

I don't like perfume on women either unless it's always the same one and I get used to it.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 1 March 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

Obviously, smelling good is both sexy and classic.

The next obvious question is: does men's cologne smell good? In my experience, no. Men's cologne is almost always made with cheap scents that smell of the chemist's shop. Men would be better off using rose water or vanilla extract than most colognes.

Aimless, Saturday, 1 March 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

in my experience, you dont know what you are talking about

deej, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

d

youn, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

deej, it's enough to say you like how the cologne you use smells. I happen to know my own experience. I expect I know it better than you do.

Aimless, Sunday, 2 March 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

i think he's responding to :

remy bean, Sunday, 2 March 2008 05:59 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose it's in how you measure it.

If there are 10,000 varieties of men's cologne and 9,950 of them are expensive scents, hand made from the juice of alpine meadow grasses and tropical frog sweat, then perhaps you could say that most men's colognes are neither cheap nor chemically.

However, if the remaining 50 varieties are made in bulk from stuff that comes in 50 gallon drums and these account for 90% of the fluid volume sold, then one could reasonable say that most men's cologne is cheap, chemical crap.

Aimless, Sunday, 2 March 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)

that doesnt make any sense

deej, Sunday, 2 March 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

No, you couldn't make any sense of it.

Aimless, Sunday, 2 March 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)

no, you're just embracing fallacy

deej, Sunday, 2 March 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

A*men and B*men are the business.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 2 March 2008 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

Hopefully they don't do a third one.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 2 March 2008 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

It is awesome when guys put on cologne for me (er, one in particular). It says, "I am doing this considerate grooming thing."

taking a shower with that Black Pepper molton brown liquid soap is a sensory experience that all men should experience...preferably in a walk-in marble joint

I have to say, having experienced the cologne I'm now mad I didn't buy the soap.

I mean I'd be sad if I bought Absolut Peppar and it turned out to be ginger vodka even tho I love ginger vodka.

one year passes...

I was just behind a guy at 7-Eleven who bathed in something today and I couldn't fucking breathe. IF you're going to wear it, remember that a little goes a long way ffs.

A few remarks on cologne and its application. I wonder if The Kids care for cologne, or if the women who date the young care for the admixture of sweat and Dior.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 02:17 (seven years ago)

There is a very bro-ish strain of fragrance culture that is all about perfecting the art of getting women to smell you from 15 feet away and lives on Reddit / YouTube. It seems to mostly be 18-30 in age range but I never know how widespread it is. The abuse of Lynx / Axe doesn’t seem anywhere as prevalent as it did in my youth. I suspect, if nothing else, the difficulties in buying young people things they don’t already have means a vast amount of cologne gets sold to aunts and grandparents at Christmas still.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 07:26 (seven years ago)

I miss cologne, but would have no idea where to start.

I don't smell it out in the wild much. There's a maintenance man in my building who wears something I used to wear when I was young - maybe Perry Ellis 360 or Emporio Armani. A few weeks ago, a real poncy beardo (I don't want to cast aspersions but the impression that I got was 'alt-right') breezed past me wafting something complicated.

how's life, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 12:14 (seven years ago)

If in doubt, go for Guerlain’s Habit Rouge imo - classic and relatively inexpensive.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 12:48 (seven years ago)

Need to try it.

I second that, it's a really nice scent, the antithesis of the in-your-face bro style. Works as a unisex scent too.

Josefa, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 13:03 (seven years ago)

two years pass...

Just bought the Guerlain Habit Rouge through curiosity after reading about it in an old blog article about the 1960s London clothes designer Mr Fish.

One of the comments from a seemingly well-informed reader says:

The men's fragrance that encapsulates that period was Habit Rouge by Guerlain. Apparently, Marianne Faithfull still wears nothing else...

(Other comments seem to be by former ilx-er Barima (the name seems familiar) ? )

It is a very interesting fragrance: quite exotic and transporting. I do like it a lot - pleased to say.

Luna Schlosser, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 12:34 (four years ago)

Keith Richards wears it too

Josefa, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 13:17 (four years ago)

I found a really old (but nearly full) bottle of English Leather in a junk shop awhile back, looks like it might be from the 70's (with oversized wooden cap). It's just wayyyy too strong, even a little bit lingers for hours. I might try to dilute it with some alcohol, but the scent is so nostalgic.
