ILX and spam

Now, I know that unregistered users can't see our email addresses. Is there any evidence, though, that registered spambots have been visiting?

I'm asking because I've just got the first spam to email addresses at my domain, which I've had for a couple of months now. The address it was to, though, was my ILX email address, which I don't use for anything else. Has anyone else had spam that's definitely come from someone picking the address up from here?

I haven't, but it doesn't surprise me that it happens. It's not exactly hard to register -you could even create an account specifically for that purpose.

It's not guaranteed that it's picked up from here, is it? I mean, people end up with others' addresses in Outlook, for instance.

Well, I don't think I've ever actually received any email on this address before - all the ILXors who email me know my gmail address. This is the *only* place they could have got it from.

Yeah, just wondering - it has also been known for people to copy and paste exchanges or threads elsewhere. I'm not suggesting that the ILX setup is bomb-proof, just thinking that there just might be another explanation, in that it would surprise me if a spambot would register here, being a spambot.

True, that's a possibility. Or, sometimes when people quote posts between threads, for example, they reveal the email address.

I dont use this addy *points down* anywhere but ILX. And to my suprise I dont appear to get spam on it.

I *do* get nutjob replies sometimes though - that "subscribe" function that sends all posts to someone's email address could presumably be misused for harvesting email accts?
