it's about time channel4 did something that wasn't aimed at teenagers, but will it last? can they keep repeats of Friends off this channel?

i'm buying a digibox tomorrow for the simple reason that they are showing The Sopranos every night( at least in their week one schedule) will it be every season from the first episode, i wonder? if so i'm never going out again.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Also, Season Six of the West Wing starts on Friday!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

and the new series of CurbYrEnthusiasm!

but when they say "new series" do they mean series 5? i didn't realise any channel in the UK had ever shown any of the previous seasons.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

It's been on BBC3, certainly, and I think it may have been in the post-Newsnight Seinfeld/Larry Sanders slot, possibly?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Jed, they are showing The Sopranos in its entireity. Hopefully to be followed by season six?

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

When does this start?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Monday

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

chap, yay!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

The first night's line up:

20:00 More4 News - Welcome to More4
20:30 The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
21:00 A Very Social Secretary
22:30 Rory Bremner: Sex Money Politics
23:00 The Last Word
23:35 The Sopranos
00:50 A Very Social Secretary
02:20 The Last Word
02:50 The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
03:15 Rory Bremner: Sex Money Politics

Apparently the episode of The Daily Show tomorrow night is the David Rakoff one from last Monday, so maybe More4 will be showing it on a week's delay rather than one day behind...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, nice post-pub timeslot for the Sopranos.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Not if you live in Scotland, it's not.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Because you stay in the pub all night?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Closing is only an hour later, but that's enough to mess up "post-pub" telly scheduling.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

i think i'm going to like this channel a lot.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I need to sort out my aerial.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

i can give you the number of a very good, very cheap repair firm (i had to get mine fixed last month) if you want.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I WANT GOOD TELLY ON THE TERRESTRIAL CHANNELS AGAIN

foxy boxer (stevie), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

OTM!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

CORONATION STREET!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

the last west wing series to air in the UK on channel 4 ended with john goodman being president in some kind of weird constitutional switcheroo. from the synopsis on more4's listings page, the series they're going to show begins with CJ retaking the gaza strip or some shit -- i think they've missed a series god damn it!

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, because the last season on Channel 4 was the fourth one, with the fifth one being shown on E4. More4 is going to start showing the sixth, so if you didn't have access to E4 before it was on Freeview, you've missed out.

I've never even seen the West Wing, so I guess it's too late to start now.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 10 October 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

whaaaaat? i have e4! and i missed series 5! when was this? fuck it!

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

Curb Your Enthusiasm is Series 4 which suits me nicely since I've only seen the first 3 on DVD and haven't bought the 4th one yet.

There seems to be lots on this channel I want to see, totally missed out on the Sopranos first time round so it's nice they're showing that. Not sure I can keep up with it being on every night though. Some interesting films and documentaries too and The Daily Show looks good.

Also tonights Blunkett drama looks like high farce from the trailers and Bernard Hill looks perfect. Robert Lindsay usually good in this kind of thing too, nice to see him away from My Family.

mms (mms), Monday, 10 October 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Hooray, installed freeview just in time.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 10 October 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

whaaaaat? i have e4! and i missed series 5! when was this? fuck it!

About a year ago. It wasn't very good. Quick summary.

*** DO NOT READ IF YOU HATE SPOILERS ****

They get a stupid comedy folksy Vice President (played by that bad mang from American Gothic), but turns out he's OK really. He poaches Will Bailey to go work for him, meaning that Toby is criminally underused as a comic character for much of the series. The old Vice Preznit causes a bit of bother, as does Danny Concannon, but it all goes away because the staffers are grebt. Abby goes on Sesame Street. Donna finds a new blokey, Josh gets a bit miffed, Donna gets blown up, she's OK, Josh goes to see her, empty hospital bed, woops, no, she's not OK again. End series.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

(Oh, and Zoey's OK)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Curb Your Enthusiasm is Series 4 which suits me nicely since I've only seen the first 3 on DVD and haven't bought the 4th one yet.

me too! when does curb begin? and also, how do i make my freeview box get more4? it doesn't appear automatically?

Slumpman (Slump Man), Monday, 10 October 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

try rescanning for new channels

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 10 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah!: http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/D/daily_show/

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 10 October 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Robert Lindsay usually good in this kind of thing too, nice to see him away from My Family.

You should get a restraining order. You are NOT POWERLESS.

What's The Last Word? Dani Behr reading from Ecclesiastes?

15min into the big Bleasdale-alumni satirefest and I'm stuck in front of the PC sorting out tedious financial shenans. Good job everything is repeated. I wonder if Armando Iannucci is going to watch The Sopranos?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 10 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It's not very satirical so far. It's more like an Alistair McGowan/Ronnie Ancona sketch which has overstayed its welcome. Yet, I'm still watching (sort of).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 October 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

i loathe rory bremner.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 10 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

'a very social secretary' -- i half-watched it. i think there were some good things, but the final verdict has to be NBG.

thx ailsa! if they showed it a year ago, though, that means they showed it *before* series 4 was on c4. so i feel hard-done-by.

i liked 'the daily show'.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Daily Show was ok. The raw material was good but the whooping audience and JS's mugging got on my nerves a bit. I think the Blunkett thing got better as it went on but it was a lot more sympathetic towards him than I'd have preferred. The new News wasn't totally successful I thought. They just picked one serious and one light-hearted story and sort of repeated C4 News's stuff.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i actually switched off 'avss' cos i was bored, but came back and it had improved. it had a weird chronology. it seemed to be quite painstaking about the synchronicity of things in 02-03, and then it jumped from mid-2003 to late summer 2004 in a heartbeat.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

i turned off AVSS when the novelty of Yosser Hughes being David Blunkett wore off, which was quickly. oddly, the opening 'you're not disabled' speech was similar to that morning's 'we're going to reform the benefits system' interview on radio 4. if only we all had jobs where we could vote for our own payrises...

the Sopranos didn't grab my attention either but i 'taped' it so i'll give it another go tonight.

is it me or is monday night a complete televisual void at the moment?

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Someone I know who used to work for Blunkers tells me it was an uncannily accurate portrayal of him, especially the chip-on-shoulder working class hero act. Shame the rest of it was so dull.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

the boris johnson impression was pathetically shit.

the evil apparatchik was probably accurate.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I laughed out loud at Bremner's own 'Blunkett as Austin Powers' sketch on BB&F the other night - yet at the same time thoroughly disturbed by Bremner impersonating/mocking a blind man and his movements under the satire banner. Not that Blunkett as a public figure should be exempt from mockery - it just seemed like rather nasty overkill what with A Very Social Secretary being advertised so heavily by the channel at the same time.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought AVSS was pretty entertaining. Hill was excellent (I didn't realise it was him until about halfway through), and Robert Lindsay's Blair was very enjoyable. Yeah, Boris Johnson was shit. They should've got him to play himself, I'm sure he would have been up for it.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't he have made 90% of the 'bloopers' reel?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

i thought he shd have done it (these things usually have real-people cameos i think?) but actually the whole thing had serious repercussions for the spectator (ie changed publisher?) so maybe he wouldn't have.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

thx ailsa! if they showed it a year ago, though, that means they showed it *before* series 4 was on c4. so i feel hard-done-by.

I think they overlapped a bit (I saw series 4 on E4 too). Anyway, you didn't miss much. Get one download (or box-set - series 6 box-set is out already so I imagine series 5 may be quite cheaply available).

The thing that was on before The Sopranos with David Starkey and some sub-Chris-Evans-type host was horrible (I only caught five minutes of it and that was enough to convince me)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I saw a few seconds of More 4. They had one of those awful look-a-like Becks and Sven, haha funny situation things on. (note: not funny at all).

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I am excited abt the daily show.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

You and 215,999 other people.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I liked what I saw of Stewart interviewing Cameron Diaz this evening - it made me think of Jonathan Ross if JR was half as funny as he thinks he is rather the one-tenth we generally have to stomach.

I welcome More4.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

i must not be special.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

we're getting 'the daily show' a week after broadcast, for some reason.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

The Ronnie Biggs thing was quite fun, if a little overstretched at two hours. The shots of that creepy spook smoking fags next to his fish tank were hilarious.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

also jon stewart is able to say stuff you'd never hear on crap like rory bremner. it's funny cos the US is famously a more litigious society than the UK's, but their libel/slander/defamation [attn: pedants] laws are way looser. like, stewart said the nu-preme court appointment woman fucked some far-right xtian dude. bremner could never say that.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I still quite enjoy Bremner and his cronies when I actually watch the show - the accuracy of the impressions makes up for lack of more audacious or risque references.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I was watching David Davis the other day, and I thought: "He looks like Rory Bremner".

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Do you remember when Rory Bremner was a Les Dennis-type ITV impressionist? I remember being quite taken aback when he got all political.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I was thinking about Bremner's early days yesterday.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I think he's said that his main inspiration to become an impressionist was Mike Yarwood.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

i think he'd gone political by the first time i saw him (c. 1992). i liked him then, but it's just pitiful now (maybe it was then too).

N_RQ, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

we're getting 'the daily show' a week after broadcast, for some reason.

It's not on in the US this week because they're preparing for the new 'Colbert Report' show, which starts on Monday. Though not on More4.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

i've just watched "curb your enthusiasm" for the first time.

i thought it was meant to be the single funniest piece of television ever?

hmm.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 16 October 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

i was just watching that one too. it was just OK - some of the stuff i've seen in series 1/2/3 have been amazing - just excruciating. give it another go.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 16 October 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

oh, i *liked* it. i'd watch it again. it's just ... i dunno. i expected it to rewire my synapses or something ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 16 October 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad somebody else has said this. The couple of times I've seen it haven't inspired me to religiously watch it at all.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I think you need to watch them, in order

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

BB&F is superb more for B&Fs little monologues and duologues than for Bremner himself.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

no, they're EVEN LESS FUNNY than bremner.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

that CYE was particularly poor.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

what was the thing that was on after touching the void on thurs (i think - maybe weds) night? it was fucking awful whatever it was: they trailed it as a superior news-based satirical thing but it was basically the 11 o clock show without daisy whatsername. it made me leave the room...

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

i assume that wasn't the daily show, so probably the annoying "last word".

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

i like that more4 show more B&W matinee goodness in the afternoons, often starting 30 minutes after the matinee on ch4 finishes. unfortunately the more4 website seems to think that its programming only starts at 18:00... (Brief Encounter today, Margaret Lockwood films the rest of the week.)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Hardeep Singh Kohli hosts The Last Word this week. I can't decide whether this is a good thing or not.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the heads-up koogs! shit i had no idea.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

a lot of the matinees are things that have been on ch4 in the last 12-24 months but it's good for catching up on things i missed at the time (Man In The Moon is on later in the week) or things i want to see again (The Bridal Path was on this afternoon)(ok, both those are ch4 but...). i'm also hoping it'll be less prone to being dropped to make way for the horseracing or cricket.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

where do you get the listings? is there a good listings website?

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

The Guide in saturday's Guardian.

the Tivo is also set up to flag things like 'Pressburger' and 'Lockwood' and 'Ealing' when they appear in anything on any channels i get, which is nice but not 100% accurate, plus i got bored of adding actors after the first half dozen.

radiotimes.com has good listing but you need to register for anything other than the main 5. itv.com will show you a channel at a time (which i used to check the above, but is rubbish for browsing)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I use Bury St Edmunds Today! Really! http://www.mydigiguide.com/dgx/wbl.dll?h=35&el=http://www.buryfreepress.co.uk

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 October 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

thx!

i love that more4 keeps its programme secretfrom the website.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

is there a good listings website?

Bleb.org

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

nice (am guessing is uses xmltv, the open source episode guide thing that in turn uses radiotimes.com), but still ignores more4 before 18:00.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I use Radiotimes.com. Aren't I old-fashioned!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

http://www.channel4.com/listings/M4/index.jsp has more4 listings, anyway.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Once you've registered with radiotimes.com, it's great. You can select the channels you're interested in, order them how you want etc. Only problem I seem to recall is having to click on something to get at this personalised page cause its address was hidden through javascript, which was annoying till I hacked the url with my amazing skills.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

verily, alba, thou art l33t.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

if you want to be really fucking hardcore about your listings, use http://www.bds.tv. you need to register, mind you, and i can't remember if they want you to state a reason for needing the service.

oh, and they don't carry C4, which is vastly, vastly annoying.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm overdosing on Grand Designs.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 24 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

the 'international edition' 'daily show' is teh sukc.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

is it me or is monday night a complete televisual void at the moment?

Elusive Peace! Except I didn't watch any of them.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

2 eps of scrubs on e4: i'm easily pleased.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Good old Bury St Edmunds Today, eh?

On ITV:

21:00
Britain's Youngest Boozers (Documentary)
Documentary focusing on seven young people whose lives have been blighted by alcohol. From 13-year-olds with regular drinking habits to a 19-year-old who died after a drinking game, the programme reveals the disturbing truth about alcohol-dependency among the under-25s, and asks why Britain's teenagers are so keen to get drunk. Narrated by Fiona Foster.
(Stereo, Subtitles)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

"A Very Social Secretary" = abysmal

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

ITV4 is my new favourite channel. Larry Sanders reruns! Dream On for nostalgic curiosity value! The Persuaders etc.

Give it a go.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

wow, Larry Sanders! i will give it a go!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Dream On stood up much better than I expected and despite only having seen that episode once, 14 years ago, it was very fresh in my mind. I found myself anticipating lines and looks. Surprising.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 November 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

omg they have Dream On ? i will surely be watching this more. (ha)

i watched hill street blues on my day off on wednesday. it was pretty good

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 4 November 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

ooooh The Persuaders. I'm not sure if I could sit through Dream On again - precursor of sorts to Sex In The City though, what with all the shagging and tepid neurosis.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

the persuaders has been on men & motors for ages, hasn't it?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 4 November 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Back to More4 - I was so irritated by 30 Days last night. Could the wife have been any more clingy and dominating? She bossed him around, spoke for him, followed him to his appointments and workouts and wouldn't even let him make a, err, sample at the fertility clinic on his own because she seemed threatened by the porno mags.

Yes, I know I should have just turned it off. But there wasn't much else on and the rubbish weather meant I was stuck inside.

elisabeth k, Friday, 4 November 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

i hate morgan spurlock.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I suppose Dream On is kind of like a male precursor to S&TC, what with the HBO nudity and the dating, but the tepid neurosis on show is more akin to that of Ross or Chandler from Friends, which makes sense, seeing as it was created by David Crane and Marta Kaufman.

I am looking forward to the woman from the strip poker episode, who lingered long in my teenage memory.

ITV4 is also showing Homicide and The Protectors with Robert Vaughn. Is the latter any good?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't watch half of my channels last night because I was only getting sound and a rather disturbing lime green screen. Channel 4, thankfully, was working OK and I watched a lovely programme about children waiting to be adopted. The best was the little boy adopted by two dads. "Why is the fireplace full of lightbulbs, Daddy?" "That's what we call STYLE." Brilliant.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Where is ITV4? The launch night was hosted by Men & Motors, FFS, and I can't find it at all on my Sky list, now that it is starting with Larry Sanders and Homicide.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I dunno about Sky, sorry. I'm on Freeview.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 November 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

ITV4 is also showing Homicide and The Protectors with Robert Vaughn. Is the latter any good?

The former is even better than I remember and the latter is the dictionary definition of Enjoyable Tosh With A Good Theme. The Persuaders is less enjoyable, toshier but with the best theme evah. Not a revolutionary opinion that, but one I'm happy to share with everyone else on the Earth.

Also: Robert V obviously secret dad of Kyle McL, yes?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

Boo:

More4 is cutting back from five editions of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart per week to just one.

From next month Channel 4's digital service will only air the Monday Daily Show Global Edition, marking an end to the five-year deal which began with More4's launch in 2005.
