i've done a lot of debunking on various new york threads, but now i want my misconceptions about the rest of the world turned around.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 October 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Liverpool is not a particularly violent place to go for a night out.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 10 October 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Los Angeles: Every stereotype is true. Not as cartoonishly true as you might think, but true. Yep.

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 10 October 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

Canberra really isnt that boring or quiet like people think. Unfortunately the city doesn't leap out and fling entertainment into ones lap; you have to seek it out, it is quiet and of a different pace. But its a cool place in many ways, and very beautiful.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 10 October 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Bruges likes tourists. No, it doesn't, it only likes their money.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 10 October 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Hull is a great place to live.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Monday, 10 October 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

(Every time I visit LA I am surprised at how all my stereotypes keep being proved completely -- but, as said above, not cartoonishly -- true! It so weird. No other city has done this, not even cartoonish cities like Vegas.)

Portland: It's not so much a rain as a light spritz, and it's just during the winter; it rains more in New York City, as far as inches per year goes. Also, I know one or two people here who aren't in bands.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 10 October 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Oxford is not posh, nor is it particularly pretty outside the city centre.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

i was on long island yesterday and it was cool to see how much 1950s architecture was still around. and not just stereotypical "institutional" or suburban identikit '50s architecture, but real posho scott fitzgerald stuff, country club- style properties with private entrances flanked in sexy stone columns and long driveways. i think there's a misconception that long island is all one big ugly strip mall until you get to the hamptons, but it's only MOSTLY true.

(in the spirit of the thread, i do technically live in a part of long island.)

Oh crikey, don't ask me. I'm new arrival. It was very easy to buy organic milk and baby food in Crouch End though, so no debunking there.

The elk on the Hanford Reach do not glow in the dark. There is, however, a problem with the local pigeon shit being slightly radioactive.

A common misconception about where I live is that all the appliances, furniture and remote control devices are edible. This is not actually true, although it usually takes a game of peek-a-boo or pattycake to discourage efforts to prove it.
