madness

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Mark Twain's essay about this to thread.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

unintentional humour = something which is very bad, so bad it makes you laugh

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Nairn, do you think there can be such a thing as 'unintentional' humour, really?

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

divine humour

RJG (RJG), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

The medieval theory of divine humours.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

ALL HUMOUR IS THE INTENT OF OUR LORD.

Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

(sort of related)

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Hm. 'Unintentional humour' sometimes seems to mean 'let's mock the less sophisticated' which is sort of lazy and dud after a while.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

unintentional humor, definitely. I mean, just look at ILX

lal, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

"'let's mock the less sophisticated'"

or 'lets mock the less paralysingly self aware'

okko, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

ALL HUMOUR IS THE INTENT OF OUR LORD.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

you already said that

lal, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

God is not remotely interested in making us laugh.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

And therein the humour arises.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

A Nairn proves you wrong.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

ALL HUMOUR IS THE INTENT OF OUR LORD.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

What is a joke without an audience?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Masturbation.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Why did the chicken cross the road?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

"'let's mock the less sophisticated'"
or 'lets mock the less paralysingly self aware'

-- okko (oko...), October 10th, 2005.

but when you laugh at someone being 'unintentionally funny', you *are* mocking them.

N_RQ, Monday, 10 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

FOOTBALL IN THE GROIN

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes, you are.

xpost

Archel (Archel), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

That, unintentionally, works without the xpost.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

but when you laugh at someone being 'unintentionally funny', you *are* mocking them.

Not necessarily. Haven't you ever done something accidentally (like some kind of physical or verbal stumble) that makes both yourself and others laugh? Life is full of absurdities that are harmless enough that we shouldn't be uptight about "mocking." And then there are people who deserve to be mocked.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

well yeah, there's that.
