I've always thought classic, but I'm starting to waver.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

never owned a pair, always consider it but never quite managed to take the plunge. I always think it'd be like copying someone else.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i had a pair, in like 1989.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

My newest shoes are CAS in navy blue with red laces. I like them. Except they are kinda narrow and tight, so I was struggling to get them on the other day and ripped them apart a little. Harumph.

Also I was talking to a 15 year old and a 13 year old kid the other week and they said they liked them, until they found out they were not high-tops, then they changed their mind. Kids are so fickle.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

totally classic! (i've got 3 pairs)

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

do you mix and match and wear different kind on each feet?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I last bought a pair of these in 1993. I still love them.

do you mix and match and wear different kind on each feet?

I used to wear one black, one white.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

they are all i've worn for years
well, and other clothes, of course

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm not that brave. but they're all high tops and diff colors and all that.

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I have a standard black pair I've owned since '91. They went thru the mud at 2 Big Day Outs, and have a Sonic Youth cloth badge sewn onto one ankle wot says "100% Dirty". They're worn to nubs, holes in the soles, but I still put them on from time to time :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Classic, especially when you lace them up real tight and they feel like a second skin.

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah they don't get comfortable till you've really earned it

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

and no one rocks them quite like YOU do!

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

trayce, sometimes you are just too cute for words! (and cool)

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

my wife forwarded this to me:

http://www.dailycandy.com/article.jsp?ArticleId=24128&city=11

"Converse One just launched their DIY sneaker site — so now you can create your own special pair in ten easy steps. You get to decide on everything from size, sneaker style, colors, patterns, racing stripes, stitching — right down to the laces. Design them as classic or razy-crazy as you like."

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

razy-crazy

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

I like the One Stars better, but they don't make them any more. Haven't seen any in the UK for years.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I like the look of them very much, but they're very flat and I already have flat feet.

Plus the laces always come undone.

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

That design-your-own Converses thing is pretty awesome.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I love Converse One Stars too and have been looking for a pair for ages and ages. The other day I noticed a few pairs in 2 shops in Bristol though they're not quite the same as the original One Stars, these new ones have "One Star Converse" written on the sides by the heel.

Louie_Strychnine, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the new style ones much. I got my last pair from Ebay, that was a couple of years ago though. At that time you couldn't buy them in stores in the US, but there was a store on Ebay selling boxed, new pairs for about $20.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Classic on the basketball court, dud everywhere else.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I've worn them for literally decades, pretty much the only gym/tennis/whatever shoes I've EVER worn, give or take some cool brown Converse knockoffs I bought in Ohio once. Wearing the black ones now. Have the bright yellow Wiley Coyote/Roadrunner high tops in my office behind me right now; wear them maybe once every three years partially because I don't like high tops but also because, well, they're pretty goofy, having pictures of cartoon characters on them and all. At home: White ones, partially turned green from lawn mowing; sky blue ones; I think at least one other pair still in my ownership. Problem is, those last three cannot be worn on remotely rainy or cold days, thanks to the rubber on the bottom being worn through in places. Anyway: yeah, classic, and I've yet to resort to e=bay or any other online service to buy them, though I can imagine that happening. But they're easier to find now (in stores) than they were a few years ago, and I always wound up finding them then.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

(PS: Wiley/Roadrunner ones, in my exact 6 1/2-men size, found for $3 UNWORN at garage sale in Michigan maybe five years ago; same garage sale where I found a New Kids on the Block sleeping bag, oddly.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Not so classic now that they retail for $40. Much better when I could find a pair at any athletic store for $14.95.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I've lately taken to kicking it old-school in standard-issue black, low-top Cons. So are they officially called "All Stars"? I thought they were "Chuck Taylors". I call them chucks...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Chuck Taylors are a completely different (and vastly inferior) animal, I've always thought! (The ones I'm wearing now don't say "Chuck Taylor" anywhere on them.) Though I am no shoe expert.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Nah, All Stars are Chucks. The official name is Chuck Taylor All Stars.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

But aren't there other shoes that actually say "Chuck Taylor" on them insted of "All Stars"? There used to be, I'm sure of it! (Maybe they merged somewhere along the line, when I wasn't paying attention??)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I've always greatly disliked these shoes. I can't imagine ever wearing them.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

All Stars are classic, but not as classic as Jack Purcells.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Dud dud dud. Recently dudded on a sneaker thread from last month.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

converse are best when they're about to fall apart

-- foxy boxer (stevieisdrinkingdosequi...), October 11th, 2005.

Yes indeed! Although they sure as hell make your feet sore once the soles run down. And they're no good in the torrential rain we've been having in Glasgow the last couple of days.
Shelley's were having a closing down sale the other day and were flogging some pink Chucks for a fiver. They were a size too big, but I shoulda taken the plunge. Would probably have been beaten up though.

I hope I can get a replacement for my current ones. They're a special edition from Office - brown with orange trim. I think they're my fourth pair. I know they're ubiquitous now, but they're like a part of me man.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

big dud.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

huge classic!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

All Stars make your feet smell for some reason.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Aww thanks A Lien! :D

And hey, I knew I had a pic of mine somewhere! Wahey.

(note: size 4. I have retardedly small feet)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

The 100% dirty patch on those makes em 100% extra classic!

Stew (stew s), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Hideous fucking things.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

A Design Classic.

Always going in and out of style, so you can just pick them up dirt cheap after they've been very popular. Can't say I usually wear them more than a few days a year, but they're very handy to have a pair of.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Why would you wear dirty shoes that are falling apart?
I say dud, they make your feet look huge!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

The "huge feet" thing is sort of true, for this reason I think they look better on boys. My roommate has a pair of them that are black with pinstripes. I think they look very nice on him.

jxnx (jxnx), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

classic, but i miss my doc martens just a little bit more.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

at this point, dud. they make my ankles look monstrous, which at times ive pretended not to notice

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

X POST dr martens

i just bought a new pair and am in love all over again

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

If these aren't classic, then nothing ever was.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I have a pink plaid pair of all stars, but haven't worn them much yet. The pink & orange plaid kind of blinds me. OTM on the doc martens- I just brought my cranberry double-strap maryjanes to the cobbler to get the elastic fixed, and I can't wait to wear them again when I pick them up. They're going on 10 years old now, and other than getting the elastic under the buckles replaced a few times, they're still in great shape. Yay for everlasting shoes.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Classic, though less so since they were bought by Nike. I'm about to buy a new pair cos the current ones (black hi-tops, second pair of Chucks I've had, the first were dark blue) are full of holes. I have flat feet too but use orthopaedic insoles which actually fit in them ok so it isn't a problem. Looking forward to getting my new pair now!

Chuck Taylor "Premiere" All Stars crica 2005

Old School (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

i always wear the soles out til there's a hole right the way thru and i have to watch out for rainy days. otherwise they dont fall apart really! does everyone get that or do i walk funny?

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I need to get a pair of those premiere ones.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i don't wear them no more because they always completely fall apart in 3 months

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

i loved them then hated them then loved them again. the wacky colours and designs kind of suck. i still love skate stars even though they seem useless for skating.

did converse quit making one stars? was the 'dead kurt shoes' label enough to send them under?

sunny successor (he hates my guts, we had a fight) (katharine), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

All Stars make your feet smell for some reason.

because they're so good you never want to take them off to wash your feet!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I think it's the canvas mixed with toe jam that smells.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

DUD

for boring american people only

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I had blue chucks that are dead now (the worn sole that everyone else is mentioning blew out eventually). I have another pair now, grey with a red pinstripe on the side of the sole, I've never worn them as much as the earlier pair though.

I usually wear skate stars to the office (one pair black, one pair sand). amusingly, while they appear to have been axed from the main converse site, they are still on the australian one. maybe I'd better stock up on a couple of cheap pairs.

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I'll recommend the premiere cons. They fit well right away, feel like a second skin, and oddly don't get wet and stinky.

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

i like the white leather ones, but all stars just don't look right on me.
