Okay, M*A*S*H has been around for ages, was one of the most popular television series ever made, and still remains one of the most highly awarded. I want to know peoples favourite M*A*S*H character, episode and quote, and the reason why.

Frank Burns: "Did any of you two ever read the Holy Bible?"
Trapper: "I did. I peeked at the end. The Devil did it."

Love that one, how about this:

HOTLIPS: That mans a pervert!
TRAPPER: No he's not.
HOTLIPS: How do you know?!
TRAPPER: Because i'm one and he's never at the meetings!

i liked henry best and liked how sherman had a hard on for horses. i still havent watched the henry dies episode. i cant remember any quotes except obvious things like 'FRAAAAAAAAANK' and something about martinis.

the biggest problem for me with MASH was all the overdone poignancy. i hated all the 'Dear Dad' episodes and the 'gosh i miss my wife and kids' moments.

and what was up with that crazy ass episode where hawkeye killed a chicken but thought it was a baby and margret was on a bed in the middle of a field? did they get a supply of LSD by mistake?

Worst example of a laugh track ever.

Favorite character: Loudon Wainwright III as Capt. Calvin Spalding ("the singing surgeon") in the 3rd season.

"That's highly significant"
"Aaah, Bach"

Whenever I have a feeling that the shit is truly about to hit the fan the temptation is always there to interject "Choppers!"

The Alda-era episodes got progressively more mawkish near the end, but there were still great ones near the end.

I've seen every episode several times (the show must have the cheapest syndication deal going), but there really aren't any lines or episodes that stick out anymore.

It got worse and worse to the point that I can't even watch the good ones anymore, the ones with Wayne Rogers. And yeah, that laugh track.

The ones with the obsessive foci on the comforts of home seem to work the best now -- Abercrombie and Fitch baths, Adam's Ribs...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Adam's Ribs. What about the one where they watch My Darling Clementine?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

"...and now, The Moon is Blue!"

*film starts*

"Come to our State Fair
It's a grand State Fair..."

"Worst example of a laugh track ever."

Do you people over the pond know that they removed the laugh track for the UK broadcast? Makes it an entirely different show. I was allowed to sit up late for it, and as a pre-teen, though Hawkeye was just the coolest.

All of which adds up to why I can't watch the cable reruns. But "Adam's Ribs", yeah . ,
