Oh dear. (Apologies if this was already linked.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

That's a load of rich creamery butter.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Best idea ever. If only there were a way to incorporate nacho cheese...

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

An old roommate and I once did this with cheese. We couldn't find anything cheese didn't taste good with, even after some frightening trials with chocolate and marmalade. But then we got to coffee.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

what, you mixed cheese and coffee, or you moved on to realise that coffee was the ultimate 'tastes good with everything'?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Don't eat pork! Both gods (Allah and Normal God) agree, don't eat pork.

andy --, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Normal God's son says it's fine.

chap who would dare to kill all the threads (chap), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

but bacon tastes GOOD. pork chops taste GOOD

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

We mixed cheese and coffee. I'm quite sure there's a cheese, somewhere, that works wonderfully with coffee, but we were limiting ourselves to pretty straight-up orange-type cheddar and American varieties.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Wasnt there a simpons episode with something like this?
This thread needs a pic of a drooling homer.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Show me the scripture where Jesus eats a pork chop. I know there's that "And God gave us all animals for our... " whatever, but Jesus never extolled the virtues of country ham. Show me.

At any rate, dude totally missed the mark with his experiment.

Well, we can at least count Christ as in on the cheese side. Take that Vegans!

I think I'd rather eat chocolate covered bacon than pomengranate-tequila bacon (which I HAVE been made to eat)

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

WTF. Where and when? And WHY?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Wasnt there a simpons episode with something like this?"

Homer prays for a new snack food and causes a truck with Johnny Bench Brand Pre-Cooked Bacon to hit another truck hauling fudge to collide.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

pomengranate-tequila bacon

yuck! what kinda bobby flay/t.g.i. friday's bullshit is that?

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

3AM kitchen experiment!! Shut up!!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

all right. that's different.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I really have no good explanation for it. I was out on a balcony when this creation was, uh, created. I was only made to eat the aftermath.

Oh hey now.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

It's only different if he hadn't been talking about making "tequila bacon" for THREE DAYS PRIOR. Pomengranate OTOH was an unexpected...twist.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I was only made to eat the aftermath.

For a second I read that as 'afterbirth' and feared.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

CCAB--chocolate covered afterbirth?

jxnx (jxnx), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

choco-bacon doesn't sound good, but I bet it IS. Salty + bitter/sweet = a bit of alright. Unless it's drippy, greasy, fatty bacon with cheap milk chocolate, in which case, blech.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, I, and the ham lovers of the world are vindicated:

"Speaking of sandwiches, in the American breadbasket town of Lincoln, Neb., an eBay member claims the face of Jesus on a sandwich was responsible for a miraculous turnaround.

'Jesus' said to overlook unclean meat on this grilled ham and cheese

"On Sunday Jan. 14, 2001, my life changed forever," the Nebraskan explains. "I had been a heavy drinker for many years and on that day, I discovered what appeared to be the image of Jesus Christ on my grilled ham and cheese. After that day, I quit drinking and began to make much needed changes in my life. I have kept this sandwich a secret from everyone, but it has served as a daily reminder of this magnificent miracle. Now however, I feel that this sandwich should be shared with the hope that its image will inspire others to make changes in their lives."

From this article, which contains much mystery Jesus cameo information:

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus would have shared his sandwich with the multitudes, rather than keep it in a shoebox under his bed for 6 years. Brother, even the homeless don't want a sammich that old.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

I would convert if communion was conveyed via grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. I would also require much larger quantities of Christ's blood, and would prefer it in the form of malt liquor.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry, I forgot that we were talking about chocolate covered bacon. I will attempt the experiment, and report back when I have a suitable base of knowledge.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm never gonna get used to the 31st century. Caffeinated bacon? Baconated grapefruit?"

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 13 October 2005 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

In northern Sweden some people put cheese in their coffee. There is a special kind of cheese ("coffee-cheese") that allegedly goes chewy and does not quite melt in coffee. I have never tried it but it looks like this:

God help me, Idropped me-brains in my coffee!

Jibé, Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

OK, if I was going to attempt making this...

What's the best way to make 'american bacon'? I'm guessing streaky, but how to get it so dry and burned?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

anything is an improvement on american bacon.
you could cover it in human excrement and it would probably taste better.
to my utter dismay i saw that sainsburys is now selling oscar mayer bacon - IN ENGLAND!
why, when we have the best bacon in THE KNOWN UNIVERSE, anyone would want to buy that shite is completely and totally beyond me.

sfxxxx, Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Dave utterly, totally off the money. The best bacon I've ever had was bought in an Albertson's in south Denver. Way better than anything I've had in Britain, which may be delicious but isn't in the same league as what I had then. Maybe Sgs can come to thread and reveal what kind of bacon it was.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

mark, i'm willing to believe that there is maybe one exception to the overwhelming rule that american bacon is utter filth.
just out of interest, was the bacon of which you speak cooked in the usual american manner (also read NAPALMED) or had someone bothered to prepare it properly?

sfxxx, Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Sarah made it for me and made it perfectly, so it was crisp yet melt in the mouth, not tought at all, and just so amazingly flavoured I ate it on its own with my fingers rather than on bread like I would usually.

I seem to remember it was a slightly special kind of bacon - maybe it was a different curing process or something. I've also had the Oscar Meyer stuff that you're talking about and really, I don't think it's half bad

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Don't even get me started on the whole "Canadian Bacon" issue...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Rob, how come you raise the pigs to be perfectly round cylinders?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

It's so screwed up... What everyone outside Canada calls 'Canadian bacon', is what we would call 'Back bacon' - the one with the round bit at the one end that tapers to a smaller bit. The reality is, the majority of Canadians eat typical 'American bacon', or as the UK peeps would say - 'Streaky bacon'.

I like both - streaky bacon crisps up nice, and tastes good and salty, and would be great for chocolate covering. Back bacon, however, is great in bacon sandwiches, and hell - just on its own. Shit, don't make me revive that 'Oh god I love bacon' thread - I'm having serious bacon cravings as it is...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

So, I take streaky and grill it till it's dead, then coat it with chocolate. This may well be a plan for the weekend.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/aldo_cowpat/bacon008.jpg

I have some leftovers in to torture people at work with today. It really is good though, the fatty bits end up tasting like a dime bar and the meaty bits being this sweet chewy mess. Lovely.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 24 October 2005 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

DO you use normal bacon or smoked?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 24 October 2005 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

I used unsmoked, but I could see it working either way. The key is getting the fat melt in the mouth - as you can see I messed it up a bit and burnt it slightly, but I don't tend to cook streaky or make it that crispy.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 24 October 2005 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never think to cook bacon that way (always use a skillet, and render it for 20 min or so over low heat to get it nice and crisp), but this looks killer. Yum!

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 24 October 2005 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

I want some of that "coffee cheese".......
