mark s, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(the agenda here = uncluttered abode => uncluttered mental state => BOOK FINISHED BY JUNE!?!?)

so what can stop me, o ile (apart from the obvious)?

mark s, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The fact that it's Winter?

David Raposa, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it is summer in dunedin = it is spring in my brane — yet ever autumn in my heart, as i remember the leaves afall in aldalöme under the waves

("oh kato, will i ever see you again?")...

mark s, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

open the windows man, if yr gonna be usin spray cans.

jess, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

spring cleaning is an interseting ritual which began in 1810 in Borneo when Corpral Bladder screamed curio daydreams out his window to the slut birds

mike hanle y, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can clean my house too if you want.

james, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I've ben doing a little spring-cleaning, gave the kitchen a serious mopping, scrubbing all surfaces even the ceiling.
Not because I like cleaning or anything, but because I blew up the bloody microwave! Put the last slice of Xmo pud in to re-heat for a couple of mins and went about my business elsewhere in the house. Four minutes later I opened my bedroom door - house fulla smoke! Coff! All doors/windows open! Opened microwave door - chared remains of pud and bowl and glass revolving tray thing and inside of micro. Blackened! Bleehhh!
Had to clean everything I could, tons an tons of febreeze everywhere in the living room, bleach cleaned kitchen, the lot. Can still smell the smoke a bit though. I only took the battery out of the smoke alarm t'other day an' all (everytime you put the grill on for 1 second, the damn thing would go off, so, in annoyance, I took out the battery. Ah well, that'll learn me)
Phew, what a scorcher!

DavidM, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To the *slut birds*? How come zoos don't have any of those fun critters?

The house has actually been very thoroughly cleaned several times over through these past months as we've beat everything into shape. It's looking better than ever. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

slut birds are very annoying, with their god damn matign rituals of standing on corvers and calling " wannnaaa parrteee"?

mike hanle y, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If the girls at home could see your cupboard now, they'd be *so jealous*.

Tim, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love it love it love it! I just got all my open cupboards done just before Christmas and will do them again in the Spring! :) The only thing I find hard to do is take the windows out, because I'm so afraid of them falling on someone's car down below... Scarey!

Gale Deslongchamps, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was going to clean our flat from top to bottom after our new years party, which left things in a bit of a state quite frankly. i washed the kitchen floor and did a bit of washing up. boyfwiend hoovered. then RickyT came home and we watched Michael Palin on video, drank wine and cooked curry. i am RUBBISH.

katie, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i cleaned the hob yesterday, which in my house is a fucking christmas miracle. today i am mostly tidying up: fonts.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you a church warden?

N., Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
ok after two intense days — in a complex quid-pro-quo arrangement still being studied by several ethics committees — the rub mob and i have NEARLY FINISHED the once-in-ten-yrs typ spring clean at Mark S Manor which was kind of implied/demanded by my new shelves of howevah many weeks ago now that it was

the rub mob have gone home, their work done (nacho the dog's "work" = eating half a carrot on the hall rug, bits everywhere grrr...)

i still have stuff to do, but can take it easy for a bit WOW

as usual i cannot now find anything, inc. my world-famous collection of spare kitten golems :(

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmph. I did my 'spring cleaning' ages ago, because I thought we'd be moving. We might even do it eventually.

Meantime, all my music's packed in a sealed box! Good job most of it's rubbish!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get this 'spring cleaning' bizness. I mean, are you telling me you only dust off the shelves at spring time?

(I mean i dust off every couple of weeks or so).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yes julio but you live in the same house as yr mum and dad DO YOU SEE?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I lean the other way, Julio: I favour Leap Spring Cleaning.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I shall do some spring cleaning next weekend.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I dust the shelves that often?

This house (or approximate area) is Dust Hell. Dust coating on surfaces within 1-2 hours of dusting. A losing battle.

When we eventually move, this situation had better improve.

Quentin Crisp had an interesting attitude toward dust...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

mark- are you telling me you can actually live with dust for a few months (OK I suppose if i was left on my own i'd prob do it once every four weeks). doesn't it get intolerable?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I can lend you some kitten golems, mark.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what, pray tell, is a kitten golem? (and can we eat it, etc etc?)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

After four years, the dust doesn't get any worse.

quentin c (rosemary), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

instead of writing 'emes' on the kitten golem's forehead, you write 'emews'.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

[insert rod hull gag]

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha defrosting the fridge (freezer cabinet door broken long ago) = a two day job

i was woken last night by a fall and crash of what sounded like small rocks and maybe earth, like a little landslip — the remainder of the ice just fell

mark s (mark s), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Spring clean is very necessary. You might clean during the winter but, at least where I live, the apartment is rather dark for several months. Then early spring rolls around and I open doors and windows to let in sunlight. And - viola! - I see dust and balls of kitty hair everywhere.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 7 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...

I'm just fucking bored the fuck to fuckery and we'd better fucking well get shut of this motherfucking house very fucking soon.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. No more spring cleaning here. The dust can just run free. I want out of here.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This morning I woke up feeling very annoyed and bored, and I started cleaning furiously -- reorganizing my CDs and books, doing laundry, throwing out garbage and extraneous clutter. I've decided that for One Whole Week I'm going to be the most organized, clear-headed person on earth. I'm gonna catch up on old writing projects, I'm gonna send out resumes, I'm gonna go to bed at a reasonable hour every night, and I'm gonna try (haha) to post less to ILX. For one week. It'll be a pleasant vacation from my usual state of affairs.

Witness the walking anachronism that is JBR -- doing her "spring cleaning" during a snowstorm.

Kitten golem picture coming soon! (I wish I could turn them into real kittens.)

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't anyone else tickled by that pic?!!!

Spring cleaning! (First step.)

I need to throw out more of this stuff more regularly.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Don't just throw it out, recycle!

Or, shred it and feed it to your bin of worms, if you've got one.

Jaq, Saturday, 28 April 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

No worms. Happily, Costa Mesa runs a combined trash/recycling program, so we don't need to sort.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

That looks like about the equivalent of a couple of days of pizza flyers and estate agents leaflets in South London.

Bob Six, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Today was totally my spring cleaning day.

Drove down to Goodwill to drop off some old clothes, but the car in front of me had a THIS IS THE LAST CAR piece of paper taped to the rear windshield. :(

Jordan, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

did mark s finish book by june i wonder?

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

Among other things was creating an actual shelf's worth of promo CDs and things I've burnt to listen to. I had to double-shelve it on one of my bookcases. It's kinda ridiculous.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

raggettstacks now specializing and getting horizontal WHAT IS WORLD COMING TO ?

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

I just finished the quarterly massive scrub of the oven/stove. Since we moved 7 months ago, there's not so much to toss, but still lots to unpack/sort through :(

I want to start digitizing all the CDs we've got so we can either move the physical discs to storage or sell them. But that's such a daunting project! It makes me want to take a nap every time I think about starting it.

Jaq, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

A little at a time. But it'll reduce.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

moving in a week so need to give everything a once-over with the formula 409

get bent, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

I have got SO much crap I need to throw out. I am a complete packrat. And I always tell myself I'll set aside short holidays like Easter to do a big cleanup, and then give up after a bit of tidying up.

I need to hire some cleaners to come scrub all my walls and shower and things. /lazy.

Trayce, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

We're thinking about moving house and have subsequently thought a lot about decluttering. It's kind of not happening, because we are basically lazy and do things like buggering off on holiday or going to the pub instead of staying in and being organised (saying that, I went to the pub on Wednesday to watch the Liverpool v Chelsea game and came home to find our kitchen re-floored, hurrah!).

We have an estate agent coming round tomorrow and I have ALL of my clothes in a pile on the bed. So obviously I am reading ILX and then going to the football rather than hanging them up/donating them to charity/throwing them in the bin.

ailsa, Sunday, 29 April 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I ever cleaned a whole house. :-(

nathalie, Sunday, 29 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Do you have a cleaner?

I bet there's a few ilxors keeping quiet about employing a cleaner.

Bob Six, Sunday, 29 April 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have dumped 10 bags of rubbish/recycling/charity shop this weekend and I am still not done.

Ed, Sunday, 29 April 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I would *love* to employ a cleaner. I'm seriously contemplating farming out my ironing to someone.

ailsa, Sunday, 29 April 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah like i said me too, if only to do the hardcore springcleaning that badly needs doing: walls scrubbed down, floors and carpets all mopped/cleaned... I badly need to empty out and clean the pantry and the fridge too; my life has been an unmitigated emotional disaster for about3-4 weeks now and so everythings gone to shit and the house is filled with insects :( I feel like such a slob.

Trayce, Sunday, 29 April 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

I've been doing little and often, instead of massive spring cleaning. Though I did do a massive clean when I bought my vaccuum cleaner, but I don't think it was Spring yet.

What I should do is buy two more bookshelves and then tackle the bookpiles and the ::shudders:: closet. Ed had to go in there the other night to fetch a cable and it was occasionally life-threatening.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 30 April 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Sgs and I repainted our living room yesterday. It took the whole of saturday to prepare for it and all of sunday to do it. But it looks fanstastic. On the downside, we found a dozen moth holes in the carpet, and I have been introduced as a result to the word "frass" (sp?)

Mark C, Monday, 30 April 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Bob, yes, we have a cleaner. I like order, but I'm terrible at cleaning. :-( I mean, I know it's easy to do, but I have a hard time doing it on a weekly basis. So we employed a cleaner. It's a very big house and I work (on the whole) seven days a week (in the shop) so I don't think I could manage cleaning in the evenings. Yes, I'm a tad lazy. ;-)

stevienixed, Monday, 30 April 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

its the best feeling getting uncluttered. sometimes im tempted to throw out everything except a few basic pieces of furniture.

i could never have a cleaner just because im one of those people who would have to clean the house to impress the cleaner. OHNO CLEANER WILL SEE MESSY HOUSE!

sunny successor, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Trust me, no matter how bad your house is, the cleaner has seen worse.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Holy shit, you might even think a civilized human being lives here. As long as you don't look in the shower stall, anyway.

Zero Transfats Waller (Oilyrags), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic dishwasher gel detergent, or Jesse's trick of oven cleaner, can work noxious-fume magic on a disgusting shower stall. But also, that Method tub&tile stuff works surprisingly well for something that is okay to touch w/bare hands. I had a bathroom cleaning frenzy after I bought some to try.

After we burned 9 big boxes of CDs to a portable hard drive (MyBook), the damn thing crashed and died.

Jaq, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

Oh man, Jaq. :-( (Something like that is my not so secret fear.)

Big fit of basic spring cleaning earlier today -- the good weather almost suggested it just because it was lovely to air out the place a bit, sweep the balcony clean etc.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 April 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

Make a backup, Ned - we actually had 2 of the drives just for that reason and had just never gotten around to it. Fortunately (as Mr. Jaq reminds me), he stored the CDs at his mom's instead of getting rid of them (which was my plan) and so all isn't lost (except the time and that @#%@%* drive).

Jaq, Sunday, 5 April 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

I have so far scrubbed the tub, washed the bathroom floor, deodorised ad vacuumed the living room carpet, wahsed some seat covers, scrubbed down several grimy walls, thrown out some trash, washed dishes and de cobwebbed everywhere. Its taken the last 2 evenings and this mornign (its now 2pm)

N has so far lamely flailed around in his bedroom "tidying" it, then walked out saying "I feel really faint, i need to rest".

FFS, man. FFS.

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Saturday, 4 June 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

who is more helpful, poor wee N or the randomly-pissing kitty?

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 June 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

I'mma turf them both out! >:|

I made him go do the shopping. I may well yet make the cat cook dinner.
