Hi. Several of us want to start a separate board for basketball. Who wants this?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Just change I Love Baseball to I Love Balls.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Good idea Jams Murphy. ILE is just overflowed by all basketball threads.

I'm in your base killin your dudes, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Obviously I'm with ya Jams, I think there would be a lot more basketball talk if we didn't have to look out for the sensitive feelings of whiners and weaklings.

Count me in.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I only hope that it can live up to the beacon of intelligent sports discussion that is I Love Baseball.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

n/a you are just pissed because you got pwn3d by gygax, there is a lot of i.s.d. on ILBB

I think the forum could be about basketball AND dodgy British snacks AND children's toys. Also: hoop earrings, hoop snakes, and the fact that "hoop" meant "fuck" in the Boston-area projects in the 1980s

I'm down, just so long as NCAA hoops are discussed. And nobody from Duke is allowed to participate.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

totally down for ncaa -- my hokies are gonna shock the acc this year!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Do it! Aaron did you see that Darko dunk last night???

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

hm darko is a lot less ugly now.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

No I missed the dunk out here in NYC! I hope it makes it on to the interweb soon though. Darko's gonna be alright afterall.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

having just recently gotten a board created, i'd say go for it.

Yeah, getting rid of those frosty tips has helped him out.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm still amazed at all the "OMG DARKO SUXXX" stuff that's been around for the past 2 years. Give the EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD a break already, folx! I don't remember people getting all stupid like this about Jermaine O'Neal during his Portland years.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I would participate in I Love Pigskin and I Love Hoops, but not in I Love Tennis.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

It will be weird if Darko gets good, because it's been fun making fun of how bad he's been so far.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for posting that link! I demand a I LOVE DARKO board too! (where people could also talk about their love for Donnie Darko)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

thing is, people WERE calling Jermaine a bust for the first few years of his career - it's just a kneejerk reaction from sportswriters if you ain't Dwyane Wade right from the jump.

The RIP threads will be a lot more fun on this board.

Yessir!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Darko went through that unfortunate bleach-blonde period that seems to be required of all European big men.

I'm hoping Dirk has grown his hair out for this season, I swear that's the Mavericks lucky charm. We need a player with an Afro, too.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

For a minute I thought you were announcing Richard Hamilton's death and I was kind of sad.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I guess there's no point in consolidating into an ILSports?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I love sports would be fine with me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

No no, I like pretending that baseball is the only sport that exists and then reacting with mock incredulity when someone I know starts chattering about the NBA or NFL.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I Love Sports = CRAZY BRITISHER CRICKET-TALK BAIT = bad news bears

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I want I love hoops. specifically COLLEGE talk.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I want a thread called "Grown men who follow high-school athletics despite not having any kids in high school, C/D?"

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't eat it all at once...

http://ilx.wh3rd.net/newanswers.php?board=95

Sort out a few FAQ items to explain what you are there for, give out some admin rights, and set and board permissions you want.

Also, if any recent threads want moving there, the thread starters shoudld request that.

Glad to be of service :-)

two years pass...

ILx, pls to help me hit the three from the corner. Anywhere else, I can sink that shit like the Titanic. In the corner, it's like winning the lottery. How to resolve this mental illness? It is v v important to my future career in games of horse against 60-year-old men.

Thanking you in advance,
Yr friend gabbneb

gabbneb, Friday, 28 December 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

is it cos I is mostly using just one hand?

gabbneb, Friday, 28 December 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Practice.

Alex in SF, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

I have demonstrated through science that I get worse with practice.

gabbneb, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Haha okay well then try prayer.

Alex in SF, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Because the hoop has no backboard when viewed from the corner your brain receives less feedback about the distance it is away from you. The three point line at the corner is also a different distance from the hoop than the three point line that is above the key.

My advice is to measure the exact distance from the hoop to the corner, then stand that same distance from the hoop, but in front of the basket. Practise there until you can swish it consistently, then move the same shooting motion to the corner. If you have trouble, move back to the front of the basket for a refesher. It's all about muscle memory.

Aimless, Friday, 28 December 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Science! The thing is, I'm not sure it's so much the absence of the backboard affecting measure of distance, though that has something to do with it, as the attempt to avoid - or overcompensation for the attempt to avoid - the presence of the backboard to the side.

gabbneb, Friday, 28 December 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

Why doesn’t the NBA have its own premiership-like thread? I need more things to waste my time on.

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 28 December 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's got its own board.

Alex in SF, Friday, 28 December 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Stating the obvious: no one reads boards that aren’t ILM/E.

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 28 December 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I never thought I’d be a person to use the word ‘aren’t’. See what the lack of an NBA thread has brought me to?

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 28 December 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

If you are overompensating for avoiding the backboard, then concentrate on your follow through. Also, try to convince some one (a bored child?) to retrieve your shots so you can get in a lot of repetitions in a short time.

Aimless, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Aimless. Retrieving my own shots is how I get "exercise" on non-running days. I think the answer here may be "patience."

gabbneb, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

put some extra arc on the ball. really rainbow it. i dont know what to say about the fear of hitting the backboard thing, did you have some kind of scarring incident with that as a kid??

deeznuts, Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

put some extra arc on the ball. really rainbow it.

yeah, that's the only thing that's seemed to work so far.

i dont know what to say about the fear of hitting the backboard thing, did you have some kind of scarring incident with that as a kid??

yes!

gabbneb, Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

don't worry about it. shoot from the top of the arc until yr muscle memory takes over and finds the range.

alternatively, dunk the fuckin ball.

mookieproof, Saturday, 29 December 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

i is sub-5'9, i will be dunking only donuts

gabbneb, Saturday, 29 December 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

go up strong

mookieproof, Saturday, 29 December 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

i could not pick and roll my way around winona ryder

gabbneb, Saturday, 29 December 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

i would suggest the opposite? of aimless' advice; start shooting from the side angle starting close to the basket and slowly move away until you get to the 3 point line, maintaining that aforementioned good arc the whole time. when i'm rusty or been away from the court for awhile I do this (from many angles) to get my shot back and it works wonders, but then i have some old muscle memory to fall back on, and i don't think there's any way to shortcut that if you just don't have it. shoot. ALOT.
