Do you call or email in "sick"?

When I call, I feel the need to sound sick, even if I am sick and I can talk just fine. But, when I email, I feel like it seems like I'm not really sick and taking the easy way out.

9 - 5er survey for people with "real" (brick n' mortar) jobs, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I put on the 'sick' voice. I would feel a complete fraud just emailing. Maybe I should mistype a couple of words to imply the strain it is causing me.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I used to, but now I don't feel guilty about being sick or needing a day off or whatever and just call in saying "I'm calling in sick" without much detail.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

When I email in sick, I was always attach a virus. HA! I KILL ME!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I've only emailed once, because I was afraid I'd cry down the phone. My boss understood in that case, but usually we'd be in trouble for emailing instead of phoning. Calling before anyone's in and leaving a message on the answerphone is also considered suspicious.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

emailing in sick? unheard of at my place.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I phoned in sick this morning. With the usual feeling of trepidation which accompanies such things, imagine my delight when the boss picked up the phone and said 'oh, do you have it too?' Cashback!

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

The only real way is to get yer partner to call in for you. That way, when yer boss tries to lay on the guilt, yr SO gets all narky and defensive on your behalf and the boss is the one who winds up feeling guilty!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I almost never SICK sick, whether feverish or vomiting or whatever, so any time I call in it's pretty much a mental health day, which I feel terribly guilty about. Also? I'm paranoid that someone will disarrange my desk or screw up one of my projects in my absence because when I come back there are always a dozen misunderstandings and procedural malfunctions.

So basically I'm ALWAYS HERE. Must cultivate that raspy sick voice, dammit. But no, we don't email in, I always call and check in w/ boss so I can give any important instructions, and we usually call again later in the day to make sure things have gone smoothly. You'd have to be at death's door to justify not checking in with my boss. Maybe she thinks we're curing cancer, here?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

I've e-mailed in sick if it's before office hours (rather than leaving a voice message).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Some bosses I've had (assholes) were funny about how you worded the "request" no matter how sick you are. I remember once saying, "I need to take a sick day, I'm just--" and was immediately interrupted with, "What do you mean you need to take a sick day?" The tone implied I wasn't entitled a certain amount by law, whick we all are. It caught me so off-guard, all I could do was say, "I'm really sick, I feel terrible." It was good manipulation on his part because he made me feel like I was begging for the day off when it was my right. I think he also said something all huffy in closing like, "Do me a favor, feel better by tomorrow."

Rex Roofer, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

EMAIL is the way to go. What the fuck are they gonna say?

adam (adam), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

email, may be with a text message as back up every time. My boss would be dissapointed if I did it any other way.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

I always call but would MUCH rather speak to the receptionist than the big boss (= my dad).

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

salvatóre, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I hate it when people phone in sick using a sick voice. "Yeah my foot hurts, I can't come into work." "Ok, so what's wrong with your voice?"

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

ALWAYS email. This is California!

Super-8 Movie Shoot in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Also my boss INSISTS that I take a "sick" day once a month or so. He does it too! He calls them "mental health days". He is a GOD.

Super-8 Movie Shoot in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

He also told me never to work more than 5 hours a day, "because they don't pay us enough to do more than that".

Super-8 Movie Shoot in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Is your boss a Bond villain?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'm curious how exactly people do their "sick voice"? Do you sort of whisper all breathy-like? Or do you try to talk in a deeper voice than usual? Or do you talk slowly like you're tired?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think people should be allowed "duvet days" for those days when you just can't be arsed to get up & go to work.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

No matter what is supposedly "wrong" with someone, when they phone in they always have to put on the sick voice, which usually involves a sore throat and some coughing. Even for migraines.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

email. sometimes I IM! I don't even know anyone's phone number here except for my own.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

The trick to phoning in sick is to go out on the lash the night before, stay up late, and set your alarm to get up at 9, or whenever you're supposed to start. You sounds sick because you ARE sick!

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

i've only ever emailed in once, but that was because I LOST MY VOICE and couldn't actually speak!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even know anyone's phone number here except for my own.

I'm the same, except I don't even know my own!

Super-8 Movie Shoot in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

i normally do the trick of phoning up someone on a similar level than me, rather than calling the boss direct.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

My "sick voice" is more just kind of tired and disaffected, rather than going overboard with any raspy or nasal voice. I usually call before my boss is in the office, so I can just leave a voice mail. I e-mailed once, but my boss told me to just call in the future.

The trick to phoning in sick is to go out on the lash the night before, stay up late, and set your alarm to get up at 9, or whenever you're supposed to start. You sounds sick because you ARE sick!

Yeah, lots of times when I call in sick it is because I've stayed up too late the night before and, in a weird way, this makes me feel less guilty because I do generally feel like shit!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Super-8 Movie Shoot in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

If I have to phone in sick when I don't sound sick, I make sure I'm lying down because it does that thing to your voice.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I always call, and always right when I wake up, so I sound extra terrible.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I usually just email.

"Hey, I'm feeling a little under the weather, so I'm going to stay home. If there's an emergency or something I might be able to help with by phone, feel free to call me on my cell."

I have yet to come across a company which will call for any reason other than to say "I'm gonna have X work on Y. Are there any files for Y that you've worked on but haven't yet checked in? We'll check them in for you before X takes over for the day."

Yes. I was very busy then very lazy then having minor surgery then recovering and now I'm back I guess. In a couple days I'll be in nashville for about a month. The company I work for now is located in nashville even though I am still in seattle, so I get to telecommute and occasionally make a trip. Which is cool cause I can visit my family for free while I'm working there.

Now back to the thread...

Martin, have you seen this newly revamped board?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

when in doubt use torrential diarrhoea as your excuse and launch into a graphic description of how "you woke up and found that you'd..." i guarantee you, you will get no further on in the sentence than that and that people will not question you about it at all when you get back.

sfxxx, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

They will, however, snigger behind your back for the next ... well ... forever, probably :-)

Our office rule is that if you're sick, you phone the office secretary before 10. I'm not sure if leaving a voicemail message is acceptable. The benefit is that you never have to convince your own boss that you're ill.

I'm paranoid that someone will disarrange my desk or screw up one of my projects in my absence

Hah, me too - I'm wary of taking holidays, even, for fear of what will have happened to my desk when I get back.

i always go in to work for a bit, usually looking miserable, attempting to "take one for the team", until they insist i go home (usually after i'm face down on my keyboard in a puddle of stomach-goo.

I hate this, feeling guilty, especially when I am genuinely sick, as I have been alot recently. But it's inevitable in my job where there are 4 of us and you are forcing someone to do your shift basically. Still hate the babbling idiot I become in my own defence.

That's what I used to do when I walked to work. Now I drive in it's not so sensible an idea; but I've not had to take any sick time for ages.

(no doubt if I did take a sick-day my boss would suggest I try telecommuting that day)

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

I used to call in sick, feigning illness and what not, until my direct supervisor told me "Its cool. You don't have to fake it. Just tell us that you're not coming in and who to let know."

I was embarassed and then immediately relieved. Conversations after that consisted of "Hey, its me. I'm taking the day."

I miss that job, to some extent.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

i tend to go in for a bit too, but when i did this recently (i was genuinely flu-like, but my apartment was freezing and figured my office was actually more comfortable) - i was given shit (not in a bad way though) for potentially spreading germs and causing more absenteeism! they said 'if you feel sick, don't come in - it's better for everyone in the long run!'.

this seems to be true, since now there's a few other people sick here (2 guys away today!), and they are all blaming me. maybe i'm a good excuse for fake sick-days, though...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

but yeah, i usually call the secretary sometime after 9, say i feel like shit and i'm not coming in. that's usually all there is to it. i don't bother with any fake sick voice or anything since i probably do sound kinda 'off' anyway...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

well, i've just called my work and told them i won't be making it in today. not for illness. nah, that's amateur stuff. i have managed to lock myself INSIDE my house. manager didn't sound too impressed, but there's nothing much he can really do. so day off work for me! woo!
the only problem with all this is that i really do have no idea where my keys are. and if there's a fire....

michael grant (michael digby grant), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

I call in sick at 7.30 in the morning. SOMEONE will be in, but the boss won't be. Perfect for scamming the day off if need be withotu having to deal with sh1t boss as well.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

I always go in too, let the boss see how sick I am. Emailing would be a no-no. We must phone the boss at seven thirty if we're unwell.

When I feel sick I look sick - it's a benefit of being light brown. Headaches, frights and general illness make me go an attractive shade of grey. This scares her sufficiently to send me home.

It would be so much easier to stay in bed and call, but the stomach churning fear of phoning in and getting the third degree kind of ruins the long lie.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

I hate phoning in, so I usually get my boy to do it for me. If I can't get through to my boss I leave a message on his voicemail or with the receptionist.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

i have to admit i am not usually 100% SICK, SICK when i call in ill - i am usually feeling under the weather or a bit tired, and I'll just decide - HEY i havent called in sick in a while! i usually try to phone really early before anyone''s there and leave a message. my co-worker suffers from "migraines" that seem to surface every month or so, and i'm totally on to her. not that i dont take migraine sufferers seriously, but i know she's faking it. i can just tell!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

I normally try and call in, but it's incredibly difficult to get hold of anyone, plus you have to inform a couple of people, so largely it's easier to just send an email addressed to all the requisite people.

I emailed in yesterday morning and this morning, although I am not off sick, I am working from home as I fell down the stairs, like a dick.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

whenever I am a bit under the weather, I usually only realise this by the time I have reached work, as before that I just put it down to being half asleep. Once I am in work I think "I might as well be sick here where I can infect my colleagues with bubonic influenza and surf the internet all day" so I tend to stay.

I can't remember the last time I was so sick I stayed at home.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

it is a great excuse. one small problem though. i have now run out of cigarettes. and still cannot get out of the house. i'm thinking of shouting out the window at some kids, handing them money out the window and getting them to run to the shops for me. but i don't trust them to come back. plus they might mock me.

(i think i was too happy about the prospect of a day off earlier to realise just how ridiculous this situation is).

michael grant (michael digby grant), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

Have a cold. Dragged myself in y/day bcz I had a meeting and a training session, felt intermittently shitty. Didn't feel better this morning so called in. Now feeling guilty because I also don't feel any worse so I could've dragged myself in again. Ehh.

Also colds suck because of everyone who calls anything worse than a mild sniffle "the flu", so you can be contagious and feel like hammered shit but feel a total dork saying "uh I'm not coming in because I have a cold" and yr boss will be all "oh A COLD" and you imagine him relaying this news to the rest of the office and everyone rolling their eyes.

but there's one woman in my office who is all "oh no, colds! I don't want your cold!" every time anyone clears their throat, so you can't win. (to be fair I also think that any time anyone obviously snuffly is in the office, I just keep quiet, bcz in my book talking to officemates is something that should be kept to an absolute minimum)

Surely this never works! Apart from permanent germ-fear woman looking suspiciously at me when I'm not even ill, nobody has ever expressed any sympathy or told me I should go home, even on the days I've felt shittiest.

Last year I had too many deadlines so I dragged myself in for a week where I felt really terrible, was going to bed like an hour after getting home every day, spent the weekend in bed shivering, having fucked-up psychedelic fever dreams (ok, this bit was awesome!) and being unable to move, and nobody at work even noticed my pain ;_;

Yeah, our guys are all about the emails. I usually just text the girl who covers for me, which is probably worse, but that's the way our department rolls, there's only two of us and we're kind of autonomous.

Taking one for the team totally used to work in my old work, especially when I used to sit in a wee team with three people, one my boss, one a whinger with a permanently weak chest who was susceptible to every bug going, and one girl who was pregnant and terrified of catching anything. See, I would *try* and come in, but my presence obviously not wanted with my germs and lurgy...
