How to get rid of earache... your suggestions

I haven't had this for a while, but used to get it all the time - its one of those things where your throat is really sore and it sort of works its way into your ear (that will either make complete sense or sound a little peculiar)...anyway I'm not posting here for a whinge, just to see if you have any solutions. My friend suggests some mix of cayenne pepper and ginger, but I haven't been brave enough to try that yet. Usually, ibuprofen and paracetomol help.

Any advice on staving off the bug that seems to have come with it is welceme too. Silly advice is good, as long as its amusing. Sensible advice is much better.

Oh dear, where is Mark S's thread about the dreaded EAR CANDLE?!?!?

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Two things - decongestant and sore throat relief. I get the same thing around this time, and there are a few things I always have at the ready come the changing of the leaves (it just happens to coincide...I don't think the leaves are conspiring against me....)

1. DayQuil - the RECOMMENDED dose. Too much, and you feel like a caffiend without the pleasant buzz.
2. Vitamens E and C, and Zinc - these keep the nasty bugs away that are so prevalent this time of year
3. Lots and lots of water - keeping hydrated helps in the decongestant thing
4. Tea without sugar - sugar, like dairy products, causes an increase in the production of phlegm, which in turn irritates your throat and makes you sound like a 2-pack-a day smoker

Also avoid - smoking. I know how hard it is, but it will make the unclogging that much easier if you limit your smoke intake.

Steam Inhalations with menthol crystals or eucalyptus oil should help too. I'm suffering with horrible sinusitis at the moment so i feel your pain.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I spent a while last night with an olbas oil bottle jammed up my nose?

You should go to the doctor if it's very painful - you might have a ear infection that could be treated w/ antibiotics. Otherwise, decongestants and expectorants or spicy thai food usually clear out my nose/ears/throught.

An older doctor I know would have me warm oil of clove mixed with a little vegetable oil and drop that in my aching ear. Oil of clove is a mild anethestic and is supposedly good for toothache as well. A heating pad or hot water bottle can also help.

I had an ear infection last year. I went to the specialist who *vacuumed* both my ears. He claimed some women had told him that was more painful than delivering a baby. *rofl* It wasn't actually that painful. But yeah it solved the problem pretty quickly.

This is going into very disturbing territory.

I think smoke sounds preferable to piss, for now.
