Maybe I'm paranoid, but there was a distinct anti-halloween vibe in spanish Brooklyn. Frowns and vocal disapproval at costumes. Some kinda catholic/no-pagan-roots thing?

There's been a Halloween backlash in Europe, for similar reasons:

Ie., it has more to do with a reaction against perceived US crass commercialism than any sort of anti-pagan thing.

What about Dia De Los Muertos? Surely THAT isn't being rebelled against, is it?

What's the difference, really?

Chavez is only a killjoy for the people of Venezuela. For the rest of the World he's consistently great entertainment.

Clerics and conservatives contend it clashes with the spirit of traditional Nov. 1 All Saints' Day remembrances.

Somebody's not clear on their history here. All Saints' Day was created to "clash with the spirit" of pagan festivals. Halloween's based on European traditions, albeit mished and mashed American-style.

Today's All Souls' Day, right?

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Naw, just the saints. Souls would include too many Americans.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Halloween's based on European traditions, albeit mished and mashed American-style.

it was only as an adult that I realised that the Americans celebrate our Celtic Halloween too.
