Only for my online nutrition class, but I AM a moderator for this weeks discussions. it sucks.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

Thought the thread title referred to the 1960s "Mods" subculture -- those cool young people who wore slick suits and zipped about on Vespas. So was slightly disappointed to hear it's about an online nutrition class!

Sofia, what are these "mods" you speak of? Did anyone ever write songs celebrating them?

They were a youth movement in Britain in the 60s.

Here is one article

From the early to mid-Sixties young, mainly working class, Britons with cash to spend joined one of two youth movements.

The Mods wore designer suits protected by Parka jackets and were often armed with coshes and flick-knives. They rode Vespa or Lambretta scooters bedecked with mirrors and mascots and listened to Ska music and The Who.

Rockers rode motorbikes - often at 100mph with no crash helmets - wore leathers and listened to the likes of Elvis and Gene Vincent.

And here is another source

hey sofia! i love the mod look too, especially mod boys in their suits and flat-top hairdos. but i think mr creamsicle may be taking the piss.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

And after all that trouble I went to to find those links for him! Don't you think that a LOT of recent bands have taken off the mod look wearing suits -- the Strokes et al.

salexander / sofia (salexander), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's kind of a running theme through the decades, there's always one genre or another giving props to the mod look. but yeah, the suits seem to have come back. scruffier hair though.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Probably because the look is totally HOTT and mr creamsicle could actually learn some tips for stylage (?) from those boys.

salexander / sofia (salexander), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

Sofia stole my thread. OK- back to the boring nutrition class that i have to check in with every other day because i am a mod!!!!
Come calculate kcals with me. or not.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: that modculture site has some vintage 60s dress patterns for sale on it, they look really cool. they're all the wrong size for me but that has given me an idea to search some out here after exams are over. (sorry. please return to online nutrition stuff).

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry aimurchie! As Gem said, continue to the nutrition chat now.
(I know, some of that fashion is so great and you can often find second hand replicas or originals in vintage shops). Carry on!

Hah! Every time I've been to Brighton, it's all Mods and Rockers helping each other fix bikes and so on....

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Every time I've been to Brighton, it's all people coming down from London for the day, and record shops selling second-hand cassettes for a fiver.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Hah! I feel like a budget mod this week - new Florence and Fred suit from Tesco (£35), whizz comedown from the weekend, Trojan soundtrack on my walkman, mountain bike, fur-hooded jacket.

How to be a Mod(erator:

Hello Seth, Alison, and Mike:

You have been chosen to moderate your group’s discussion for Unit 8 on people's initial opinions about supplements. You will only be asked to moderate a discussion once during the semester.

Basically what I’m asking is that you read the postings each day and ask questions of the other members of your group, particularly if someone’s post is unclear or doesn’t make sense.

After a few people have posted, you can also start a new thread if you have a question that you think would start an interesting and educational conversation that is on topic.

Also, at some points it can be a good idea to summarize.
Please be sure that people in your group feel included, acknowledged, and heard. It’s not important that we all agree on everything. Being open to other ideas is important.

Once the due date for the Discussion has passed (Friday, Nov. 4th or so), within a day or two return to this assignment and post a brief summary of what happened in your discussion group in the textbox to the right; a couple of interesting highlights will be fine. A lot of detail isn’t necessary. I’ll read your summary and post it to the rest of the class.

So, keep these 3 points in mind as you moderate:
1. Question - for clarity and to expand the discussion
2. Acknowledge – to keep others involved and appreciated
4. Summarize - two or three highlights for the class

Please email me if you have any questions.

What happened to point 3?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

And after all that trouble I went to to find those links for him!

sofia, i was responding to Estaban with my comment, thus the little "xpost/crosspost" bit

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello, you ARE point three.
Thanks for asking that question. That's an interesting point you have just brought up. It affects me because I didn't notice a lack of point three in my RDA of points, but now I think I might take a supplement to supply me with any and all point 3 requirements!
In fact, I am going to hop on my Vespa, in my short black skirt and elfin boots and race to the store to purchase some point 3. I will be listening to The Jam on my headphones while simultaneously pretending I'm in London in 1966 AND adjusting my oversize, very black sunglasses.
Then I will ask insightful questions about B-12 intake levels.
I'm an excellent Mod.
(I don't have the temerity to point out to the Prof. that she forgot point three- maybe after I have passed this truly awful, very bad course).

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

Martin Freeman was a guest on Loose Ends on sat. It is an abysmal show, but I just didn't have the energy to throw my radio against the wall. He's talking about some Soul Jazz comp he's been involved with and referred to himself as a Mod. At that point I was thinking about an old ILX post that once made me chortle:

pete townsend is a pedophile
therefore you are a pedophile

Moo Vaughn, Monday, 2 April 2018 13:50 (seven years ago)

I am a moderator twice over, on two different non-ilx hiking forums. The inhabitants of those forums are already so moderate that there's very little to do between spam attacks.
