And did you know -- It was formerly classified in the raccoon family (Procyonidae), but now many experts, including Wilson and Reeder (1993), classify it as a member of the bear family (Ursidae) or in its own family the Ailuridae. The most recent DNA research places the Red Panda in its own family, within the superfamily Musteloidea.
PS They also have what is known as a "false thumb."

― Aimless, Sunday, 13 September 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
So cute. Threat of cuteness. What was I reading recently? Some Irish novel and they used "cute" in a slightly different way. Someone said, "cute hawks," like it was supposed to be menacing or something.
― bamcquern, Sunday, 13 September 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)
"Cute" comes from the same root as "acute" I think and in 19th Century/early 20th Century slang means something more like sly, cunning or devious. Whether this use is specifically Irish I'm not sure, I've mainly come across it in Joyce so that's possible.

No pics yet, but Cleveland Zoo announced new red panda babies on Friday:
Rare red panda triplets were born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!For the first time in its history, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is home to red panda triplets. The arrival of the cubs is quite extraordinary considering endangered red pandas rarely are born in threes. In fact, prior to this year, it had been 10 years since a set of red panda triplets had been born in an accredited North American zoo.One of the cubs, female "Mei Mei," is being raised by the Zoo's veterinary technicians at the Center for Zoological Medicine because she required medical treatment shortly after birth. Following treatment, Mei Mei's mother would not reaccept her into the nest, so the 2-pound bundle of fur is staying at the hospital until she's mobile enough to go on exhibit.

Red panda escapes from London Zoo
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46379000/jpg/_46379079_001023995-1.jpg
The red panda which escaped looked like this one
A red panda has been caught after making an escape from London Zoo. The furry animal managed to get out of his enclosure and was spotted by security guards climbing a tree in a nearby park.
At first he would not budge, and staff had to stay under the tree during the night. Eventually he was brought down safely and returned to the zoo.
An investigation is underway to find out how the mammal managed to escape.
Red pandas come from Asia. They are about the size of a large cat and are really rare, OK?

Rusty the Red Panda Returned to the National Zoo Gotta wonder about the zoo's security. Several years ago a leopard (or possibly another cat of about that size) got out of its cage. It was found just outside said cage, sunning itself like a boss.
