Since the 80's are cool now and everything, should they relaunch the doomed, maligned beverage?

No.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

It's better than Diet Coke (I hate nutrasweet, though).

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

When New Coke came out in '85, my neighbors bought a bunch of old Coke to save and sell to buy a house. They also stockpiled Billy Beer.

Claim: Coca-Cola halted production of its flagship beverage in 1985 and introduced New Coke in its place as a marketing ploy to combat declining market share and rekindle interest in the original drink.

Status: False.

Origins: As much as we'd like to believe that The Coca-Cola Company is infallible, it proved in 1985 that it isn't.

It's inconceivable to us mere mortals that a company of the size and scope of Coca-Cola could make a mistake on the scale of Do I look new?the one it made in 1985. Although company officials have been honest (albeit a bit redfaced) about the blunder all along, the legend has arisen that New Coke was nothing more that a throwaway product created as part of a greater plan. People refused to believe any decision that colossally disastrous (and ultimately that colossally fortuitous) could have been the mere result of a very human miscalculation.

And yet it was. It was also a very logical — indeed, reasonable — mistake to make.

Diet Coke with Lemon is my favourite. BASTARDS!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 5 November 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

This is a strange concept.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 November 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

They should bring back those Benetton-esque polo shirts!

8th Grade Prep, Saturday, 5 November 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I guess they were called Rugby shirts. They went well with your J Crew jeans and your penny loafers. Coca Cola, it's not just for drinking anymore.

8th Grade Prep, Saturday, 5 November 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

some friends and i were once wondering whether there was any new coke left anywhere on earth. i'd really like to know what it tasted like.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 5 November 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Coke Zero is fantastic. And 'cos it's new, it's ultra-cheap all over NY in a trial kind of way.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Vanilla Coke is amazing! Crap, it's like when they cancelled Frutopia. Or Lime Lucozade. Or Tab clear. GRR.

stet (stet), Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

coke zero is way better than diet coke or the coke with splenda. cant explain it, but its just better, has a more regular coke like flavor.

AaronK (AaronK), Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I've heard New Coke is taught in business schools as the business mistake or something.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 5 November 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

that's startling news, cunga

In Blink (the Gladwell book) the New Coke error was blamed on Coke executives who were trying to create a sweeter product similar to Pepsi cause they were way behind Pepsi in blind taste tests. The Coke execs thought this signaled changing public tastes, that the public wanted sweeter drinks. The Coke executives failed to realize that people keep drinking after the first sample, and that the taste becomes too sweet over the course of drinking a whole can. Initital instincts were misleading.

biggins, Saturday, 5 November 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

They got rid of all the New Coke by shipping to Samoa with crates of Spam. Seriously.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it wasn't cost-effective, but New Coke ended up in all kinds of obscure (for the US) places. There's an essay there.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

ok, further research reveals that new coke got renamed "coke II" a few years after the debacle and only stopped being sold in the US in 2002.
