FA Cup 2005-06

I wanted to start one because it was the first round today. My beloved Bristol Rovers were away to Grimsby, who of course beat Tottenham in the League Cup, but we won with two goals from Junior Agogo, the second on 87 minutes. It seems like years since we've had any kind of FA Cup run, so we could do with one. At home to someone like Burscough in the next round would do me, then away to Man U or Chelsea or someone else huge, for TV and money. Or Spurs - I'd love Rovers to come and play 300 yards from where I live.

Um, and you can talk about non-Bristol Rovers FA Cup stuff here too, if you must.

I believe Burscough play Burton or Peterborough at Burton or Peterborough. I have been speaking to my dad, you see.

Congratulations to Tamworth and all their supporters on a tremendous achievement, beating AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court.

I noticed that the ref in the Burton game was one "P Miller" I sense a hint of bias.

Chesterfield were pretty poor at the Matchroom stadium, fortunately so were Orient.

Dean court is now known as the "fitness first" stadium. quite poor.

Do any people actually use these terms? Can we kill them?

I'm off to the Fitness First Satdium At Dean Court on Saturday to watch my beloved Bunch of Wasters Who Couldn't Even Beat Weymouth At Home FC.

What do you call AFCW's home ground, Dave? And do you cringe while doing so? (I don't, cos I don't, IYSWIM)

So, er, Chasetown then? Technically one of the biggest upsets in the Cup ever but no-one is talking about it - a draw is still only a draw I suppose.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 7 November 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

The problem with calling a draw an upset is that a draw is the equilibrium state of a football match, i.e. if nothing happened for 90 mins the game would be drawn. So I think it's certainly a huge result for Chasetown, but not quite semantically an upset. But maybe I'm just being anal :)

(I see Exeter benefitted from concentrating on the league this weekend...)

The Observer gave about an eighth of a page over to the FA Cup on Sunday morning, at the end of eight pages about the Premiership — a league the very same paper never tires of attacking for being so boring.

I suspect that in January the Observer will trundle out a piece about how terrible it is that some people have devalued The Greatest Cup Competition In The World (TM).

I call it Kingsmeadow, and find the whole Fans Stadium shite, well, a load of marketing coke addled shite.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 7 November 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Burton play Manchester United next week. It is a friendly to mark the opening of the new stadium, I think.

wow, an entirely empty thread with nothing on it, not even a title, how odd...

i wonder how that happened...

I watched all the FAC1 goals on BBCi yesterday afternoon - they were on an alphabetically-ordered loop all day, I think. That Colchester 9-1 was like Brazil burying New Zealand in a WC group match - all spectacular strikes, even the plucky Kiwis' (sorry, can't remember who Colchester actually beat).

Have to say, I think Brizzol Rovers were a bit lucky, but I suppose if the opposition plays on when their centre-half is laying injured, you can't really be blamed if you also continue once you've dispossessed them. Also, tenuous family ties with Grimsby (cousin scored for them).

Chasetown were extraordinary - I'd never even heard of them before yesterday. The ref clearly had some sense of romance, ignoring two stonewall Oldham penalty claims in the dying minutes.

Speaking as the only Burscough fan on this thread (come on you linnets!) I feel it is only fair to point out that Burscough probably would do you.
