I'm getting new flooring and appliances in my kitchen and need to remove my old stove. Anyone done this before? Do I need to call the gas company?

The gas man came, took out our electric stove.
I helped him carry her.
He told me he had been a prize fighter once.
Shuffled her through and out the door.

We walked back in talked 'bout his boy at u.v.m.
And we began to put the new stove in.
But I miss my stove. she's all alone.
Call it love. she's been replaced.

I miss my stove. she's all alone.
She's right out front and looks a mess.
Unwanted guest. we lied to her.
I miss my stove. feel sad I guess.

I know I shouldn't think about it anymore.
What's the point? you say.
But I'm reminded each time I walk out my door.
My stove is gone to stay.

Start by sawing through the copper pipe at the back with a hacksaw.

There should be a couple of valves to shut off the gas. I come from the land of all-electrical appliances, so I don't know much more than that.

In most states of the US, technically speaking you do need to call the gas company. regulations deem that a certified gas appliance technician does the work. But you're gonna do it yourself, I can tell. Aren't you? After you turn the gas off, use a 5/8" wrench to undo the flare fitting that could be either at the top or the bottom of the backside of the unit. After that it's pretty much ox work.

If the stove has an electrical plug for the clock/electronic ignition/etc (mine does), first unplug that. Locate the gas shut off valve - there will generally be a piece of flex hose leading from the back of the stove to it. Turn the gas completely off at the shut off valve, then loosen and remove the flex hose from the gas pipe.

A note: The main gas valve to your house (out at the meter) requires a big wrench to shut off completely. If you live in an earthquake area, the disaster-preparedness people will teach you to "rock" the connection once a year, so that you can actually shut it off if there's a disaster. BUT! If you do shut it off, you have to call the gas company to have it turned back on.

I don't know if it's true everywhere, but around here plumbers are certified to work on gas lines and appliances.

The connection from the regulator to the appliance point has to be done by a certified person from the gas company, and inspected by the gas company. Connecting an appliance to the point can be done by anyone with a wrench. We went through this earlier this year.

Or, if you're queasy about it, call the gas company or check their website and get a list of qualified people in your area.
