" One ad in Virginia charged that one candidate would not have supported the death penalty for Adolf Hitler..."

A Kilgore ad alleged that Kaine's opposition to the death penalty meant he would not have executed Hitler. Kaine cites his Roman Catholic beliefs for his opposition to capital punishment, but insisted he would carry out death sentences because they are the law.

This may be the most batshit negative ad campaign I've ever heard of. Anybody here seen this? Virginians to thread!

Isn't it New Jersey where the governor's race has the Republican using comments from the ex-wife of the Democratic candidate against him?

Also, remember Saxby Chambliss' campaign against Max Cleland in Georgia three years ago...

B...But... Hitler wasn't executed!

Yeah, New Jersey. I can't imagine that ad will have much traction with anyone -- some small subset of women, maybe, but by and large it just seems over-the-line personal and also quite obvious: are we meant to be shocked and surprised that the guy's ex-wife doesn't think much of him?

And yeah, I would not have advocated further executing Hitler's lifeless rubble-crushed body, either. If it ain't broke, etc.

the ad

(NB before anyone asks: the quotes involved are one candidate's wife saying something like "Doug's good for his family, and he'll be good for New Jersey," and then later the other candidate's ex quoted as saying "when I heard that, I couldn't help thinking John let his family down, and he'll let New Jersey down." So I say "some small subset of women" because I can only really imagine that giving pause to e.g. stay-home women who are actually in a position to care about a particular man's reliability, and maybe think of that as a central character issue -- I think the average man would probably just be all "so what, of course his ex hates him." The big undertone, though, is that the divorced candidate is a Democrat, and I think on some level the whole thing's meant to play into stereotypes of philandering playboy liberal elites vs. rock-solid conservative family men, etc. -- you know, Democrats as slick sneaky weasels.)

Also why should an opponent of the death penalty support it for Hitler? If it's a moral opposition, it's a moral opposition; you put Hitler in jail for life, which all evidence suggests would have bothered him way more than dying. It's like someone's trying to pull a sneaky turnaround of the "even in the case of rape and incest?" question, only this turnaround doesn't work for shit; the whole moral point is that you just don't kill people, and it's really people who advocate the death penalty who have to deal with particulars (even if they're retarded? even if they're children? even if they're reformed?).

OTM, I was just thinking of making a similar point.

nab, OTM. Would the Kilgore have supported the abortion of Hitler, though? That's what I'm curious about.

Hitler enjoyed a quiet retirement in Uruguay, making watercolors and practicing watersports.

Haha, Kilgore -- has he been campaigning in an Air Cavalry hat with Wagner blaring?

The lead-up this season for the VA gov. race has been fraught with hilarious, over-the-top messages.

When I was going to my place of employment today, where they are also conveniently holding the voting, some old woman accosted me this morning pushing a flyer and screaming: "Vote for the babies and seniors!"

Groan.

I like the way they use the fact that Kaine had a decent education as bad thing.
