i saw a car run over two people this morning

it was on broadway, a block or two below houston, around 11 a.m.

what happened as far as i can tell was this. there was a car double-parked a a little too close to oncoming traffic, and when the light changed from red to green the car behind it sorta hit the back bumper -- nothing major, but it sent the double-parked car (which i guess didn't have its brakes locked) reeling through the red light and veering at a 45-degree angle towards the curb, where there were two people standing. they were both knocked down. they weren't bleeding, but both were crying and one was clutching her leg in pain. i couldn't stick around for more than a few minutes to find out whether the driver ever showed up, but as i was leaving another bystander was on the phone with 911, trying to get an ambulance over there.

ugh, it was awful. this shouldn't have happened.

and when the light changed from red to green

or green to red. i didn't really see. but i know the "parked" car definitely ran the red.

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

was anyone else in the area when it happened?

i was in shock. still am. i've seen car accidents before but this one was pure carelessness and could have easily been avoided.

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

holy shit. :-( at least no one was killed, i suppose, but that's got to be pretty horrible to see.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

About thirteen years ago, my friends and I had just come out of a convenience store and were getting in our car, and we saw this big old pick-up truck turning into a parking space in front of the store waaaayy too fast. It went over the concrete block (what the hell are those things called anyway?) in the parking space, over the curb, into a lady and her kid, which were smashed into the pay phones.

Turns out the kid was basically pushed under the pay phone and escaped serious injury. The mother of the kid was messed up pretty bad, though. I heard she was paralyzed from her waist down. The driver of the truck was a drunk woman. One of the most intense and fucked up things I've ever seen in my life by a long shot.

Ooh Jody that must have been awful to witness! :( Have some sugary tea if you're feeling shaken!

An ex of mine once saw a blind woman get a glancing blow to the face by a passing bus she didnt hear coming. It luckily didnt run her over totally but apparently it did smack her full in the face and send her flying. I dont ever know if she was ok either :/

divider?

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Horrid! poor you, to witness it. What's up with the double parking in NY anyway? Everytime I see it, I think it's so wrong. I saw a bus hit a lady crossing the street once about 15 years ago. I happened to look out my office window 4 stories directly above it. She flew like a rag doll. Awful. An abulance took her away & I never heard the outcome, but the street was blocked until the next day!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

What's up with the double parking in NY anyway?

haha parking is pretty limited around here.

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

i didn't mention that i was crossing the street while this car was hurtling towards the curb -- i was quick enough to run out of the way before it could hit me. i didn't realize no one was in the car, so i was yelling out "what the fuck is wrong with you?" to an empty vehicle. :-(

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

did it actually run over them?

where did the car end up?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

it literally knocked them to the ground. i didn't see whether the wheels went over them, but i heard the sound of the collision. the car rear-ended a legally parked car in its path and that's when it stopped.

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

it's possible that the woman who was closer to the crosswalk DID actually get run over.

I am very upset

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

That's horrible.

One time I was exiting an airport and this guy was lying in the taxi lane after having just been hit by a taxi. It had just happened, as the police cruiser parked 50 yards away came over as I stood there watching. The guy was clearly in pain, but he looked alright. No blood. He was holding his knees and kind of rolling around a little, like someone would after getting the wind knocked out of them.

I read in the newspaper a couple of days later that he had died from his injuries. That was a bit shocking.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Some rich asshole woman on her cellphone in a range rover backed over a nice little old lady in the post office near my folks' place. When she realized what she had done, she put the car in fwd and ran her over AGAIN.

Oof. That's terrifying and sickening. Hope you can sleep tonight. :(

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

my dad's car once got into a pile-up. a cop car coming from a nearby precinct sped through a red light at the intersection on his way to a crime scene. the cop had JUST turned on his siren a couple of seconds before he crashed into one of the line of cars perpendicular to him (which included my dad's camry, two cars back). naturally, the front end of the camry was mangled, and the rear of the next car was banged up too, but no one was hurt and the insurance company came through with the repair money.

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

agh, people are mental with cars... Even just seeing these things is terrible, let alone being involved, god. This reminds me of a pretty terrible event that's in my head now so I'm going to tell it - but it's pretty disturbing, so look away if disturbed by kids getting hurt and the legal system being fucking harsh.

Over a decade ago, when my brother was 15 he had to go to work one day straight from school, but my mom was working and the bus would've taken too long, so he called a taxi (this was a fairly urban school, so taxis weren't that weird or anything.) So the taxi comes right after school when everyone's milling around, hanging out about to go home, and my brother gets in and before he even puts his seatbelt on or tells the guy where to go, the guy slams on the gas and the cab goes flying into a cement wall near a side entrance to the school. My brother's head goes through the windshield and, horribly worse, as bad as that is, three girls are pinned against the wall. And a huge number of kids is witness to it all. And the cab is still going - some guy manages to shut off the engine before the ambulance arrives. Totally. Awful.

Everyone, including the three girls who all had to have varying levels of major pelvic, leg and foot surgery not to mention physio and therapy, had to deal with the court case for a few years too. The cab driver pleaded that he'd had some kind of attack or fit and appeared less than repentant about what had happened (but who knows what goes on in people's heads). The cab company was ordered to pay damages, but nothing near what could have compensated, and the guy continued to drive cab.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

That's fucked.

Not just because it's awful what happened to everyone, but because it actually sounds like the dude had some kind of attack and was still allowed to drive.

I got hit by a car once.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

from "being a witness" thread...

I witnessed an accident where a car crashed into a parked lorry at high speed. I was the 1st person there as it happened right next to me. Anyway, both occupants were found to have been drinking, the passenger died a day later and the driver is on bail. I had to give a statement before I could leave the scene, I also spent a good few hours at the police station yesterday going through and adding to my statement. I wrote some notes down when I got in after the crash, and showed them to the police officer yesterday. He said these would be “exhibit a”. this made me think that it may go to court and seeing as I was the 1st person there and saw the actual crash, they’ll be asking me to do the witness thing.

Am a little worried, do I have to do it, if so, how bad can it be?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Seeing that kind of thing totally shakes you up. I saw a guy hit by a car the other day - he was crossing a side street as a car was coming out of it, and the driver was watching for a gap in the traffic, not the direction he was going. The guy who got hit was thrown up into the air then landed with a horrible thud on the road, and got up with blood from his head pouring everywhere. I called the ambulance. He phoned me a few days later to say he was ok and I'm waiting for an insurance company or the police or someone to call too.

Horrible as it is – and everyone knows someone who's been injured badly or killed in a crash, I guess – it's surprising how physically resilient people often are.

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

We once saw a car hit a cyclist. The guy just flew in the air and fell on the ground. The first thing the driver did? Check if nothing was wrong with his car! "It's a rental!" was his excuse. He didn't really look at the cyclist. But thank god that cyclist didn't really have much. Maybe a concussion but that was probably all.

The cab company was ordered to pay damages, but nothing near what could have compensated, and the guy continued to drive cab.

WTF. A neighbour of my parents in law was killed by a trucker who had recently lost his license. :-(((

now i get an impression of NY to be full of rubbish drivers. i saw an accident while i was there too. it was somewhere near so-ho i think. and we just crossed the street and suddenly heard this taxi make a SQUEEEECH braking sound behind us and then "PLOM" midway through the squeech we turned around and there was this dude and his bike in the air. argh.

don't blame us, all those drivers are suburbanite commuters who are too uppity to take public transport!

When I was a kid, a driver hit my parents' car; he was zooming along at about 20mph over the speed limit, and my dad was turning across his path. The first thing he said to anyone - whilst I was being hauled out of the wreckage, covered in blood - was "where's the nearest phonebox? I'm going to be late for a party"

A few years ago my friends and I were leaving a busy campus parking lot at night after picking up pizza (?) and there was a mess of cars at the exit. My friend Sarah (not driving) looked over and started screaming. A man was on the ground, covered in blood and his legs and head were split open, and his bike was mangled under a car. Some dumb bitch had turned the wrong way into the parking lot and hit the bicyclist straight on and ran him over. We could see his eyes trying wildly to focus as the paramedics got there as the girl who hit him stood beside her car with her arms crossed looking annoyed.

about 7-8 years ago in brighton across from Boston College I was at the atm near White Mountain Creamery (if anyones familiar with the area) and I saw a girl get hit. I was pulling out of the parking spot and saw this car go speeding by and I hear a thud and see a shoe on the hood of my car. I also see a girl flat in the middle of the road screaming in pain. I freaked out and had no idea what to do. Luckily there is a T stop right there so people came over to help and called 911.

Have seen a similar thing, not nice.

I once rubbernecked at an accident to see a middle-aged woman completely motionless and almost certainly dead, still in her driver's seat. I still have a strange sensation when I think about it.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i remember one night walking thru the city after a football game and we heard this screech at the intersection of flinders st and swanston, a man on a bicycle had slammed into the front windscreen of a small car, completely shattering it with the impact of their body. we were about to call an ambulance but the bicyclist just dusted himself off and rode away into the night!

minna (minna), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Not long ago, I remember reading about someone who hit a girl and killed her in the hood...think it was in Little Rock. Anyhow, news story went that virtually everyone in the neighborhood was arrested and convicted of manslaughter for dragging the man from the car and beating him to death.

fucking careless asshole drivers, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I posted this a couple of months back, and to my great disappointment killed a thread stone dead:

When I was at university I was cycling across town (not London, somewhere up north) one evening to my girlfriend's house. I had lights on my bike, but due to student poverty the batteries were almost gone. As I went along the main road a car pulled out of a side road right in front of me. I hit the side of the car and somersaulted over the bonnet with the bike still attached to me (I was wearing toe clips) before landing on my head (I wasn't wearing a helmet) in the middle of the road. A car coming the other way just managed to break in time. Some passers-by stopped and helped get me and the bike out of the way, but instead of thanking them I was just rolling around going 'fuck! fuck! fuck!'. But, and this is true, the woman who had driven into me came over to help me. The side road was the exit to the accident and emergency department of the hospital, and the woman had just finished her shift working there as a nurse, so she took me straight back in there. So that was about the best way to have that accident. A stranger offered to look after my mangled bike while I went to hospital, and it took me quite a lot of time and effort to get it back again, but that's another story.

If it happens again I will be slightly less disappointed this time. Probably just bewildered and bitter.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

oh no *hugglez*! somersaulting on bikes are the worst. i only did it all on my own (by getting my jacket caught in the front wheel, thus becoming the brake, and the bike went whooppie cartwheeling)

also: please tell me that that nurse is now your wife

Afraid not.

A few months ago, I was walking along the road when I saw a coach stopped in the middle of the street and two motorbikes standing on the pavement. I noticed a man lying underneath the coach and another man standing and talking on a mobile phone. I didn't really pay much attention and thought maybe something had got caught under the coach and the guy was trying to get it out. Anyway, the next day there were loads of flowers tied to the railings.
