Gotta start sometime.

M. V. (M.V.), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah don't count your chickens before they hatch. That said if ANY Republican senator seems doomed, I'd say Santorum was the best bet.

Unless it turns out that Casey had an affair with a five year old boy, I think he's a shoe-in at this point.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Whoops, I obviously don't know how to spell shoo-in.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

There's an article about this race in The New Yorker this week, and about how the Democrats are more willing than in the recent past to embrace anti-abortion candidates who they think can win. I guess Rendell -- at Chuck Schumer's behest -- muscled a pro-choice woman out of the race to clear the decks for Casey.

If I were facing Santorum in an election I'd capitalize big time on the idiotic statement he made about liberals being at fault for the molestation of children by priests.

especially since there was a HUGE stink a month or so ago wr2 a report showing that the philadelphia diocese covered up the molestor priests in the diocese (i.e., this sorta thing isn't just confined to "liberal" boston).

not official yet, but at this point it'd take a miracle for Republicans for Santorum to hold on

I would love to see the deleted scene from that Dawn of the Dead remake where some character takes a sip of coffee, spews it up, and says "This coffee tastes like SANTORUM!"- apparently they showed it at a test screening and people went apeshit laughing but then it got cut anyway.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

No concessions yet, but I think the margin is around 17-20 points, so it's a safe call. (xpost)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Senate's No. 3 Republican bit the dust Tuesday. Rick Santorum, one of President Bush's most steadfast supporters, was routed by Robert Casey, the anti-abortion, anti-gun control son of a popular Pennsylvania governor.

I wish I could be excited about this. Casey is just about as thrilling a politician as his dad was, and I have a hard time believing that the conservative Dems will have the effect on Washington that the Class of '94 had for the other side. Even though an MSNBC exit poll showed more than 50% of Americans support some degree of troop withdrawal, dudes like Casey & friends aren't making a case for it, and neither is Dean.

[I almost wish I voted for Lynn Swann, just to be able to say that I did (Dude lost like 84% to 16% here in Philly according to some exit polls). His campaign proved his best fade route yet.]

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Never mind, I googled it.

In his Senate office, on a shelf next to an autographed baseball, Sen. Rick Santorum keeps a framed photo of his son Gabriel Michael, the fourth of his seven children. Named for two archangels, Gabriel Michael was born prematurely, at 20 weeks, on Oct. 11, 1996, and lived two hours outside the womb.

Upon their son's death, Rick and Karen Santorum opted not to bring his body to a funeral home. Instead, they bundled him in a blanket and drove him to Karen's parents' home in Pittsburgh. There, they spent several hours kissing and cuddling Gabriel with his three siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1 1/2. They took photos, sang lullabies in his ear and held a private Mass.

"That's my little guy," Santorum says, pointing to the photo of Gabriel, in which his tiny physique is framed by his father's hand. The senator often speaks of his late son in the present tense. It is a rare instance in which he talks softly.

He and Karen brought Gabriel's body home so their children could "absorb and understand that they had a brother," Santorum says. "We wanted them to see that he was real," not an abstraction, he says. Not a "fetus," either, as Rick and Karen were appalled to see him described -- "a 20-week-old fetus" -- on a hospital form. They changed the form to read "20-week-old baby."

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

santorum on schiavo was, um, kind of a nail in the coffin, in a manner of speaking.

blackmail (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

That's not exactly the same as "take dead fetuses home and try to nurse them back to health" --- it's a fairly fucked up way to mourn a dead child but I think children dying fucks people up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't that Santorum thing fairly standard practice? It happened to a friend of the ex-wife, the hospital encouraged her and her husband to do it to help them cope with the grieving process. The impression she got was that it was a fairly routine thing to get the dead baby 'home' for a few hours provided the mother was up to it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

I've read similar stories before so I think it's not uncommon.

what does it mean “hockey sticks”? (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

From the Wikipedia page on stillbirth:

Everyone responds differently to grief and loss: some individuals cope better with their grief if presented with the option of spending personal time with their child, sometimes bathing, dressing, and taking photos of them; and many parents wish to keep memorabilia such as clothing, hospital bracelets, and/or footprints/ultrasound photos. Often, missing these opportunities (due to traumatic stress, illness, or other factor) or being denied them can compound the loss, and it is important that these options be expressly offered or suggested by the health care providers or others involved with the family. Many hospitals provide families with a "memory box"; these are donated to hospitals, primarily by local organizations concerned with stillbirth and child loss.

If the family has other children, developmental psychology generally suggests that: giving them the opportunity to meet their stillborn sibling allows them to experience the child as a real person and helps them understand death; it is natural for children to ask many questions, which should be answered openly and honestly, and they should be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings, especially if they seem to be withdrawing; children tend to apply literal interpretations to what they are told, so accurate terminology should be used when discussing the stillborn child, death, and similar subjects, so that the child does not become confused or develop phobias (such as developing a sleeping phobia when a stillborn is referred to as "asleep").

Laughing at somebody who's suffered this, much less making political capital out of it, is beyond fucked up.
