"Thundercats" had a great arch-villian. Mumm-ra, whom you expect to dominate every episode a la Cobra Commander or Megatron, appears maybe once every three episodes. He let the Mutants do the dirty work while he chilled out in his tomb, catching up on sleep and watching "Family Ties." Not only does he get all the best lines (and probably the best cackle of any '80s cartoon villain), but he would scare the shit out of you by unexpectedly invoking some arcane spell and transform into a steroid-pumped Mummy of Death that could fly, cackle even louder, and shoot Sith-lighting from his fingers.
Meanwhile, Galvatron aka Megatron may have had the coolest design of any Transformer, but he was also batshit. He could destroy any Autobot with his bare hands but was too hopped up on meds to do anything but glower fiercely at Rodimus Prime and occasionally slap bitch/lover Cyclonus around.

"In the film, it is revealed that the COBRA Organization was created by Golobulus, the ruler of an ancient race of part human/part snake/part insectoid people who were the rulers of the Earth before humanity, but their culture was all but wiped out by the ice age, and they fled to the Himalayas as humanity evolved and developed its own technology. Biding his time to retake the Earth, Golobulus sent a Cobra-La citizen, who turns out to be Cobra Commander, to go out and destroy humanity. When Cobra Commander fails, he is de-evolved into a snake in favor of Serpentor; it is also revealed that Golobulus implanted a psychic motivator into Dr. Mindbender's brain to inspire him to create Serpentor. The other Cobra heads, Destro, the Baroness, Dr. Mindbender and the Dreadnoks agree along with Serpentor to help Golobulous take over the world in exchange for their preserved humanity. Golobulus wants the human race's Broadcast Energy Transmitter or BET so that he can accelerate the maturity of his space spores, which will shower the human race upon ripening and turn them into mindless animals, while all those in Cobra-La are protected by the Ice Dome. Only G.I. Joe stands in their way."

xpost: Duke was supposed to die in the movie, but they changed their minds at the last second and redubbed the dialogue at the last second. Apparently, the lip-synching of the characters & their reactions make it pretty clear that he'd died.

wikipedia answers all my childhood questions:
The G.I. Joe film has been a subject of much debate among fans of the series. Some think it an under-rated masterpiece that should have been released theatrically, while others feel that it is an insult to fans and an insult to everything that G.I. Joe stood for. Many fans were irritated by the lack of screen time given to the older Joe characters they knew and loved from the original series; of the older G.I. Joe characters featured, only Duke received any significant screen time. General Hawk is only seen sporadically, though he does take part in two major battles, while Flint spends most of the film in the Himalayas looking for Roadblock and his captured unit while only being featured in the final battle against Cobra-La; Scarlett and Lady Jaye, G.I. Joe's two most prominent heroines, also only appear sporadically (Lady Jaye actually spends the majority of the film as a prisoner of Cobra-La), while Cover Girl is only seen at a distance several times and has no dialogue.
On that note, many have complained that the film spent too much time focusing on the cocky Lt. Falcon, who was voiced by Don Johnson, though some felt his smart aleck persona brought some more needed contrast to the series and that Johnson gave him some much needed spirit. Lt. Falcon was intended to replace Duke, which is why it is revealed that Duke and Falcon are half brothers (more on this below). Originally, Lt. Falcon was supposed to be the son of General Hawk, which would probably explain the dark hair and the bird themed names and why Falcon looks more like Hawk than he does Duke.
Another frequent complaint is that the origin of Cobra Commander as a member of the Cobra-La race did not make sense, especially when his ceremonial hood revealed that he had caucasian skin and human eyes, not the inhuman blue colorings of the other Cobra-La characters.
The writers did not originally intend for Cobra-La to be the name of the rival civilization. 'Cobra-La' was merely a placeholder name in the drafts until they could think of a better, more alien name, but Hasbro executives fell in love with the name and asked the writers to keep it.
The biggest point of controversy rages over Duke's brush with death. In the film, after Duke rasps "Yo... Joe..." to Falcon for the last time, Scarlett is heard saying that he has gone into a coma, to which General Hawk assures Falcon that they'll do everything they can to save him. In the original script, however, Duke was supposed to die, and according to series writer Buzz Dixon, if the scene is viewed without dialogue, going merely on the final movements of Duke and by the tearful reactions of Falcon, Scarlett and General Hawk, then it is quite obvious that Duke dies in that scene. Fans have also pointed out that Serpentor's snake javelin hit Duke roughly where his heart would be, and in real life it is generally impossible to survive such a serious injury.
Duke was intended to die for a number of reasons:
1. Duke was being phased out of the toyline by Hasbro, and Hasbro did not want the show to waste time advertising a character who had no action figure. It should be noted though that a new Duke action figure was released in late 1988 and then a new one almost every year thereafter, guaranteeing his continued presence. 2. The series promoters decided they were tired of all the criticism they were taking over their depiction of "sanitized violence", especially when compared to rival series Robotech. The decision was made to kill off one of the series more prominent characters, and Duke, who had been identified as the hero in the MASS device miniseries and come to be regarded by fans as the poster child for G.I. Joe, was chosen, and his sacrifice to save his half-brother Falcon would be the catalyst that inspired Falcon to become a real Joe.
However, the death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers film caused a huge backlash from parents, complaining that the scene had caused great grief and trauma to their children. The producers of G.I. Joe decided they did not want to run the same risk with G.I. Joe so they changed Duke's death to a coma at the last minute. Some fans have theorized that if G.I. Joe had been released first with Duke's death, then perhaps Optimus Prime would have been spared (the public backlash ultimately resulted in Optimus Prime being resurrected in the Transformers series). Interestingly, though Duke was supposed to die in the film, his death would not have carried over to the G.I. Joe comic books.
Fans generally agree that the action sequences are well done, and in particular, all fans agree that the opening sequence featuring the GI Joe heroes fighting to save the Statue of Liberty from the COBRA invaders, set to a hard hitting redux of the G.I. Joe theme song, is the film's greatest moment. Interestingly, that opening was originally going to be the film's climax in earlier drafts of the script.

Christ, some folks take these things quite seriously... Someone mentioned Evil-Lyn, which lead me to googling her, which lead me to Skeletor's Wikipedia page (yes, such a thing exists - it seems that most Masters of the Universe characters have their own Wikipedia entry). Anyway, that page features some interesting discussion about the MotU film:
Numerous parts of the previously-accepted history of the series are ignored in the film, one such inconsistency is the vastly more effective evildoing of Skeletor, a previously somewhat inept villain. In particular, Skeletor had never previously been depicted as having command of a vast army of black-armoured soldiers.
Some fans, however, counter with the observation that many of these apparent inconsistencies with the "main" cartoon/minicomic canon could be easily be explained by interpreting the film as simply being set some time after the events of the regular canon. Apart from obvious inconsistencies of design (all the character's costumes and especially the Power Sword and Castle Greyskull), there is little in the film which is wholly unreconcilable with the cartoon & minicomics if one applies this "fanwank" rationale. There is virtually no material in the film which directly contradicts past canon; rather there are merely few references to it.
This theory points to the fact that at the start of the film Skeletor has already conquered Greyskull (and much of Eternia), which could easily explain the absence of many classic characters such as King Randor, Orko etc. Such characters can easily be supposed to have been captured, killed or driven into hiding prior to the start of the film. More importantly, this argument maintains that the lack of a depiction of (or even references to) Prince Adam does not by any means preclude his existence, and some would argue that under the drastic circumstances of the film's plot He-Man would have no time or reason to adopt his secret identity.
Furthermore, while Skeletor's Stormtrooper-esque legions admittedly had no previous depiction in the MOTU-verse and although their origin or precise nature are not divulged, the very existence of such an army makes Skeletor's unprecedented victory all the more plausible. Furthermore, shuch a shift in the nature of the conflict could well explain the Heroic Warriors' own escalated use of high-tech weaponry, which was, after all, always an element of classic MOTU, going right back to the earliest toys. Given the vague similarity between Skeletor's armoured soldiers and Hordak's robotic Horde Troopers, some have even speculated that Skeletor's rise in martial prowess could possibly be accounted for by his having defeated his former teacher and rival at an earlier point and, as a result, taken control of his armies.
At least whoever wrote this was honest enough to call it "fanwank", which sounds like an appropriate description.
