Pro Evolution Soccer 5

No one's answering on ILG and I can't find the old thread, so fuck it. Here's a new one.

It arrived yesterday.

Initial thoughts...

It's really wrong that I feel insanely proud to have just beaten China 2-0 with Classic Argentina on ***, isn't it? Screamer from Maradona was nice, and a low slam from Kempes after a nicely-worked free-kick to finish them off.

Maintaining possession is WAY harder. Tackling is harder if only because the soft tackle is now a foul almost all the time (wtf?!). Dribbling is nigh-on impossible, even with Maradona I can't ghost past people!

I like that shirts are now un-tucked if you want. Much better. Animation for shooting is much more realistic too. I like that the ball swerves much more now too, that's better. I've turned on the crossing thing that Cozen recommended.

I lost 1-3 to Ivory Coast. IVORY COAST.

They've tweaked the players in the Classic teams, which is annoying - no Garrincha for Brazil, no Di Stefano for Argentina, wtf?

Has anyone got an FAQ for what real names in the classic teams and additional players and so on are?

I managed 2 1-0 wins, a 2-0 win and a 0-0- draw last night, with Classic Aregentina against teams like China and West Ham on ***. Fucking HARD.

My first game was with Arsenal against Middlesborough on ** and Henry got 4. Fucking stupid.

More hints, tips, encouragement and commiserations, please...

I'm on Xbox, btw.

I suspect that Emma's little brother will get his ass whupped though if he played me on this rather than 4 - he'd got to the point where he could beat me if I was drunk, but he doens't play with anywhere near enough sensitivity to cope with the tweaks on this one. I reckon I'd pummell him.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

i lost 3 games out of 3 last night. one time man utd v chelsea, utd were outclassed for the first half and lost two goals, then in the second half they were on fire, loads of chances should have scored, missed with an open goal, hit the post once. got a penalty in the end and lost 2-1.

then man u v arsenal, would you believe it, man u were dominating, it was a draw and then went to penalties. and the arsenal scums won it.

last one i can't even remember. was drunk.

ps2 PES5 >>>>>>>> xbox PES5

soul provider (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Why is that Cozen? I only have an Xbox.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

... and nick to answer your question on ILG, there are a number of readily available (commercially & downloadable) patches available for the PS2 so I would figure that there must be one either being made or already available for the xbox version.

soul provider (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

in that useless, intangible way that critics despair it feels very different... I was never sure of the exact relationship between controller and control and how much the difference in control is down to programming and difference in machine specs and versions (and to properly test my theory I'd have to play the xbox version with a ps2 controller) buttt saying that here's my take: with the ps2 version I feel a lot more control than I have with the xbox version... the xbox one felt spongey and unresponsive and I gave up on it quite early, whereas with the ps2 version the difference in control qua PES4 was obvious but I felt more like I was trying to both a. master that difference and b. then master the controls... I felt like I was playing the game rather than its faults... which eventually means once you can successfully play the game you stop playing the game and begin to play other people... you stop to fight the game and the real challenge becomes your opponent, and matches become a struggle of wills rather than the fumblings of two frustrated newbies

soul provider (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

I've seen patches, Cozen - there's one at pesfan.com - but I don;'t have a USB memory card gizmo in order to get it on my Xbox. All I really wanna do (Is baby be friends with you) is give the classic teams the correct names.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

played fifa '06 yet, nick? must have played for 9 hours non-stop last friday night. pretty unforgiving (but thats the way i like it) and i dare say it's better (and i've always been in the pro-pro evo camp myself)

Michael B, Friday, 11 November 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

I haven't. I've not played FIFA in years. Convince me of its worth.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

you can do neat little 1-2's either on the ground or in the air. dummies and heaps of other tricks i havent got the knack of yet. it's early days yet and i mostly play 2 player so im more concerned on whipping mate's asses rather than acquiring the knack for those things. keepers are fantastic but not ridculously so. i'm not sure what was the last pro evo i played, it could be 4 or maybe 5 but i found a sure fire way to score a goal was always a well timed through ball. my mate con kept using it against me but once i figured it out every match became like 5-4 or something like that. so i got fed up of it quickly. there isnt much of a difference between fifa 06 and the pro evo games, which is probably why i like it so much.

Michael B, Friday, 11 November 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm so terribly sick about the computer AI in PES5 on PC, the xbox version sucks as well but the PC is an utter disaster. The referees suck they never give cards depending on the position, card is only shown to blatant slides. on 5stars, computer mostly doesn't fail to pass to another player even if you press with 3 people. the ball tends to go to posts, i don't know why but it's not a coincidence i say!. and while playing perfect as a computer would, it mostly can't score unless its a very common goal.. it's not fun when all the games end 0-0 . I really think the game is a masterpiece, been following since 5-6 years maybe, but don't they have decent betatesters??.. I can volunteer if need be!

mersenne twister (mersenne_twister), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing this a LOT.

It feels like cheating, but I like being able to assemble a masters league team.

I can win most of the time on 5 star now, which is good. Challenge Training is addictive too.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

the referee is a wanker in Pro evo 5.

they still haven't properlyl done the advantage play, and because it's so easy to get fouled now without getting cards, you can just foul people everytime they have possession on the halfway line (just a nudge from behind) and all play is broken up.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
I am really rather pleased to say that an idea formed when writing this blog piece on DYS has now become an idea.

I thought about watching a tournament with people playing ISS Pro, and when a friend asked me to help out with an idea he'd had for a football film festival, I suggested he widen it out and have a new media section. The result is here...

as a creationist this title offends me

--++--+, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

heh, yeah i've had many a thoughts in the past about making a game of "procreation soccer"

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I picked this (PS2) game up a few weeks ago for a fiver. I've never played any Pro Evolution games before, and I'm finding it very difficult. I scored my first goal yesterday, after realising that you can't just hammer balls at the goal at hope for the best, as was the case with the last football game I played which was probably FIFA 95 on the Megadrive. But the main difficulty I'm finding with the game is actually getting the ball off the other team. The possession in my last game was something like 58%-42% in the other team's favour. The just pass the ball between themselves, my players actually seem to be running away from the ball. Pretty much every sliding tackle results in a foul.

So basically my problem is this: how do I intercept passed balls, and if one of my players is next to an opposing player with the ball, how do I get it off him?

Any other advice is gratefully received!

nate woolls, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

the computer is really hard to play against in this game.

is it pes5 you have, not 6?

either way, the key is to not commit yourself to tackles too much. often you can win the ball simply by blocking all the options that the computer has and forcing them to do a bad pass. you don't necessarily need to tackle them with X or O to do so. But as a general rule I suppose I'd use X when you're sort of stationary and or moving slowly and the other player is too, and O when they're running and you're coming from the side or occasionally, if you feel you're going to time it right, you can clatter them head on.

tap X gently and try to time it at the moment when the ball is loose from the player you're trying to tackle.

another tip that you should perhaps put on the shelf until you get your head around the above, is that if you press R2 and R1 together (and a direction) while the ball is in the air, you can move the man you're controlling more freely. this is quite difficult, at first you'll move him way out of the way and probably concede if you do it in defence.

but try it when high balls are travelling towards your attackers, just hold those two buttons and a direction. do it quite deftly and don't hold for too long and use it to ease your player towards the ball. or use it to pressure a defender physically (it's also useful for crosses)

Ronan, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

and remember, the computer wants to beat you. he doesn't care about you or anyone you know. when you press that "start game" button he will be ready. he will ruthlessly seek to destroy you.

YOU MUST DESTROY HIM FIRST.

Ronan, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair, he will probably ruthlessly string together a load of counterintuitive passes, accidentally run the ball out of play on the touchline a lot and then score a suspiciously pre-ordained pinball-machine like set piece in stoppage time

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

sacrilege

Ronan, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan otm though. The fouls in this game are notoriously frequent, it's best to just hold down X until the defending player's tight with the guy with the ball then just sort of intermittently tap it when they show you any of the ball to try and jockey them. You will probably develop an instinct for this but it is mostly about pressuring them to give it away.

I recall it being quite easy to skin players in PES5 with the change direction faint, whereby if you are facing left you would tap diagonally down left and then diagonally up left when in possession, leaving various chumps for dust.

Adapting to Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is one of the most stressful experiences in life other than death and moving house and that

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

But by god, when you scramble that 67th minute winner away to Bolton in the league you know you've fuckin earned it son

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it is PES5 that I've got, not 6.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it out later. I've been pressing X to pressure the opposing player, but all that seems to do is make my player run towards the ball, but by the time he's got there it's been passed to another player so my men just run around like headless chickens. The training exercises are great for every other aspect of the game, but not for defending.

But despite my frustrations I'm still loving the game, my goal last night was incredibly satisfying. I love all the little touches, like the way my men hold their arms out when they've been pulled up on a foul, kicking the air in frustration when they miss a goal, those kinds of things.

nate woolls, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

it can be somewhat humbling to put your controller down when on defense and see how well your team actually manages to do without you

Tracer Hand, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

and let "the force" win the game for you

Ronan, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

OTM. I switched over to letting the computer control my team, to see if maybe I'd just chosen a shit team, and they were incredible.

nate woolls, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

PES6 is much better, especially re. fouls.

baaderonixx, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

I have this for both my PS2 and PSP so I'm never without it. PSP has some issues though - NO replays at the end of the game (boo!) and only ONE line of commentary - "And it's a goal!".

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

i'm still playing this with my master league team, i just can't let it go.

i've never had a problem with tackles or getting possession from computer, but the first touch of my players is usually quite weak. also, just before you change to a player he'll sprint in another direction just so he's in a crap position.

nonetheless, a game that ate my life.

darraghmac, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i REALLY wish i could replay some moment from the game just after it happens - is it really impossible to do this???

Tracer Hand, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

In your head only I believe.

I've been playing ProEvo2 on the original playstation for much of this past year and then last week my housemate bought a PS2 with ProEvo4. I am utterly addicted. I'm away for the weekend and miss it already. Had an amazing game last night where between us my other housemate and I had five players sent off (me being on the soggy end of that one) and I still beat him.

In another game I was two-nil down on 44 minutes and won 5-2.

Uptoeleven, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's amazing the way this game gets more intuitive the more you play it. I just beat Sweden 2-0, playing as Wales. A stunning goal from Giggs and a header from a corner from Earnshaw. Only a ** game, admittedly, but an amazing feeling of satisfaction.

nate woolls, Saturday, 28 July 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

i've started playing PE6 on "normal" and have identified a huge flaw in the game - playing on "amateur" ingrains VERY BAD HABITS which will get you creamed at the higher difficulty levels; shouldn't easier levels be easier but also be training you up the right way so that you might stand a chance once you decide to move up?? france just got killed by the czech republic and i'm still smarting from the humiliation

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 28 July 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I could play you all. I have no humans to play against =(

admrl, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Neither have I. If anybody's got a network connection for their PS2 I can play them. Perhaps we could set up a few online games?

nate woolls, Sunday, 29 July 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

i just got my netplay disc! will not have access to ps2 for another two weeks tho :/

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 11 August 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

How do stupid people like me do network play? Do I just need a ps2 and a modem/router? ILX league? I am rubbish but I will set it up!

admrl, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

LAWRO will be commentating in the new Pro Evo whenever it comes out.

Ronan, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

If you've got a new PS2 - the smaller ones with the flip-up lid - you don't need a network adapter - it's built-in.

I've discovered you don't need a network disc from Sony either. There's a certain amount of PS2 games that have a network setup built in, you can google for a list, or just try out a few games until you get lucky. I used a game called Battlefield Combat 2.

All I did was to plug my PS2 into my BT Home Hub, load up Battlefield Combat 2, go to online play, and just mess around with the settings til you're online. It's fairly self explanatory and there's not even that many settings to mess around with. If I can do it, and I've got practically no knowledge of network settings, routers, IP addresses, etc, then anyone can do it.

nate woolls, Monday, 13 August 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

ok i'm ready people. who will play me?? PHJEAR MY SKILLZ0R etc etc

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

you have pro evo 5 now?

ken c, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

no, i have the latest! 6, or 7 or whatever it is

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently Lawro's commentary on PES2008 is a low for the series, and presumably humanity, but Jon Champion is surprisingly good

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

my favorite thing about the commentary on [the latest PES, now probably a year old] is when they sound as if they're sniping at each other.. i.e. "yes, that's fairly obvious"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

the halftime and post-match commentary when i began playing was my barometer for how well i'd done; now i realize that it depends entirely on whether or not you've scored a goal in that half

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Pro Evo 5's commentary is a feast of unintentional homoerotic single entendres, if i remember correctly.

stevie, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

was it PE5 that had that guttural trevor brooking sexual moan which appeared at random times

Ronan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

most impt q: who will play me????

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not very good, if that helps

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

ronan: yes, along with much partridge-esque mis-speak, all of which is escaping me at the moment.

stevie, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

"that's a bitter blow for them to swallow"

Ronan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

btw tracer, i will hammer you, but don't live in London.

Ronan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

NET PLAY

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

it's this thing

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

i need that crazy expensive wire for the ps2 to do net play

Ronan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

all mine needs is a network cable? it's got a jack built right into the back

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

really? I'll take a look.

Ronan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
