barr the coda which is a cute formal nod to what it might want to be? absolutely exquisite

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 November 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

the movie that my self skipped

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 13 November 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

(cuz i was sick! i wanted to see it)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 13 November 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I liked it and the guy was hott but ultimately I didn't get the point of it.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 13 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

This was so dull I nearly walked out. Didn't it have every cliche in the book about high-art musicianship?

alext (alext), Sunday, 13 November 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

? such as...

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't go to the cinema much these days (this was the first time I've been since... april?) and so bear that in mind when weighing the feelings I have for this film and 'the constant gardener'...

I forgot how much I love the cinema... I really do

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 November 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

i fell asleep. i think it was pretty good, but i was hell tired. i think 'read my lips' was slept on, or at least, it didn't get the praise this one has had, and i found cassell a more compelling actor. and i think your basic problem with this film is the premise. i didn't believe this guy could have existed.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

A Self Made Hero is also really really great. I still haven't seen this, but I've seen Fingers (which is good.) It's out on DVD here next week so I'm sure I'll catch it then.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

My favourite film released this year.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 13 November 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

The whole 'musicians are special super-sensitive people and look how the language of music transcends words and ANGST and stuff' stuff. Don't know why the film annoyed me so much, possibly because it was supposed to be a Friday afternoon treat and I was missing out on a celebratory drink with a mate. I'm not a big fan of gangster thriller stuff I suppose, and I was hoping for something more sensitively done.

alext (alext), Monday, 14 November 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

i think it was saying, like 'the piano teacher', look at the INNER CHAOS and FIYAH that lies beneath the utter self-discipline and formal control required of great musicians. and yes, it's about redemption. i don't have major problems with that as far as it goes, but i couldn't believe in it.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 14 November 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

loved it. so my two favorite films this year are about french musicians with domineering fathers - this one and look at me/comme une image.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I thought he was more disgusting than domineering.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I liked it, but I didn't love it.

KSTFUNS (Ex Leon), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

: )

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

he was both, i think.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

need ot track down comme un image obv.

I didn't think he was disgusting at all, besides his face

isabelle said he is a sexpot

a little, freaky sexpot

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

WHAT? The father? He was so seedy and horrid. No wonder she likes Ally.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I almost went to see this with isabelle, five minutes ago

maybe it's just as well I didn't

RJG (RJG), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

the father is not sexy. not even in an "offbeat" way.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

oh I didn't know you were talking about the father

I was talking about ROMAIN DURIS

I bumped into isabelle today, too; glasgow is too small sometimes

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

romain is another story.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Romain Duris is certainly a sexpot. I didn't even notice he was little, but I suppose he was often with the Chinese woman.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

he's an ugly little shit but certainly very attractive

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

heard about you, btw

RJG (RJG), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

try the beat that my heart skipped more

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

you had to type that

RJG (RJG), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

i had to

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I really liked it, though i did see it the day after the dreadful Me & You & Everyone We Know, so maybe it just looked like a masterpiece of restraint and subtlety by comparison.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I loved the scene with telepopmusic's "breathe"

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

that song is so lovely...

"just breathe / just believe / an-other day..."

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Saw this last night - excellent film. I did notice Duris had pretty substantial cuban heels on though which was slightly off-putting, but the rest of his wardrobe was first class. Very stylish.

and big headphones!

JohnFoxxsJuno, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

cuban heels!

those are what I'm looking for

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I found the coda almost more interesting than the rest of the film. He becomes a slightly sleezy fuck/manager but the semi-redemption via music is not convincing. We see nothing earlier in the film that suggests that his is a killer, so when he decides not to kill the Russian the redemptive link with the music is not there.

Worst film I saw this weekend, but then I did see some pretty good films this weekend (Gardener, Murderball and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh, was that supposed to be a big deal, that he just stopped short of actually killing him? I thought it was a kind of History of Violence thing about how after civilisation, the old violent thug lurks within. The way you present it makes more sense, but it wasn't convincing, for the reasons you state.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

It was certainly better than The Constant Gardener though, which was an ill-judged mess.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

: (

pete and I will never agree on anything, but alba!!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

account settings (account), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

He just didn't seem like a piano player. He moved too much in the wrong ways.

great movie, i thoughy, and my man LOVED it. the scenes with the chinese piano teacher are spot on, well acted and genuinely funny. there's one second of this film which is quite possibly the funniest one second of film ever.

ALSO, romain duris, GRRRR.

jed_, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

thoughy = thought

jed_, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

ECOUTE-MOI, GLOU-GLOU has become my catchphrase since seeing this film.
