a white van is doing circuit of the block

it stopped about 10 minutes ago, and about 6 lads got out, all with 3-4 ft long wooden sticks, shouting aggressively. they ran after someone. there was some kind of altercation. it happened out of my line of sight

since then, the van drives past every 10 mins or so. no one gets out

2 weekends ago, a different van woke me up. it was outside my house. it was driving forwards about 20 yards, then reversing 20 yards, then going fowards 20 yards.

this happened for about 10-15 mins, then a middle aged woman got out, and got into a car just in front

both vehicles moved forwards about 100 yards. then they repeated the process, the van moving forwards and backwards about 2o yards

do you live in the uk terry? are these van-dwellers the kind of urban soophisticates who like to harrass asylum seekers?

Le Marquis de Salade (noodle vague), Sunday, 13 November 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

I had 2 car accidents happen at the same intersection within 2 days of eachother.

Both times i was sitting on my ass playing halo2 and heard a big "pop"

Mon Star2 (hydraulis2), Sunday, 13 November 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

i live in the uk, yes

it is impossible to tell what kind of people are in these vans

terry lennox. (gareth), Sunday, 13 November 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, i guessed the UK too.. Thrash, former Orb engineer could be driving around in one of them vans nicking people's wireless internet with a dish made from a trash can lid.

I wish i could bring my gun to the UK and clean up the filth. Maybe I'll be like batman but instead "yank man" or better yet, "Super Yank!"

flag down the van and ask them if they are willing to die for ALLAH

There is a powerful jet of watwer emanating from next door's roof - does that count as weird?

Yeah, I think so.

There's a midget doing a little dance.

There is a shopping trolley outside across the road, it was there last night, I suspect students.

Two nights ago there was an incident in the next building. Two ambulances, a fire truck, and two police cars came. The fire truck and ambulances eventually left, and an hour later, an unmarked detective's police car came. The police cars remained for about an hour and then left. No body was carted out, and I have no idea what happened.

A couple of weeks back, two motorists got into an altercation in front of my window. There was much shouting and name calling, and one of the guys took out a baseball bat. Luckily cooler heads prevailed, and they got back into their cars and drove away.

The other day someone totalled a stolen police car outside of my house.

last night two teenage girls screaming at each other about the father of one of them. i couldn't quite work out the details but i don't think it was a sex thing.

Somebody got shot right in front of my apartment -- like, 2 feet away from my front door (we're the ground-floor unit). Apparently, I might have been home when it happened!

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 14 November 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

i wish that were weird for my neighborhood, gibs :( that's pretty frightening, though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 November 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

I live in the very center of Melbourne's most notorious prostitution area, and my window faces onto the street, so I'm often woken in the middle of the night by prostitutes screaming at eachother/pimps/managers/boyfriends etc.

I'd gotten used to this, but last week as I arrived home a pimp came up to me and asked if i could recharge his mobile phone for ten minutes so he could call one of his girls. Apparently she had gone off with some dodgy looking character and had been gone about half an hour too long. He was concerned for her safety.

I agreed out of expediency (don't really want to make enemies of local pimps) but since then I've wondered what the politics/ethics of the situation are.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 14 November 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

It's not that weird for mine, either, I guess. Weird for my block, but not so weird, say, four blocks away.

I've been pretty sanguine about it. When that stuff happens it's usually gang-related, which means the chances of it happening to me are less.

Also weird: my roommates and I saw the events leading up to it as we were walking home from dinner. Scuffle, yelling, guys with bats, running away. We took a different route home (that involved going in the back entrance).

The guy's ok, fwiw.

xpost Like, "Come on in, pimp. Want something to drink?"

There was a drug related shooting at the house across the alley from ours last year, about 11 o'clock on a Saturday night. I was out in the office (close to the alley) when it happened, and it was so unexpected in this quiet little town that when I heard the two pops, I walked out into the alley, in the dark, to see if I could see the car that backfired. The house was mostly empty until this past week — one of the new residents walked past our house on Friday and I couldn't determine a gender — it was either a guy with big tits or a woman with a mustache.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 14 November 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Our new neighbourhood is so quiet it's unsettling.

There was a woman standing alone in the street wailing very loudly last night. She appeared to be alone. She collected herself a bit and walked away.

Drunken couple having incredibly late night/early morning drunken smash windows type of fight. Not that weird but hasn't happened in a few months.

one car remains

There is a road leading up a hill right up to my father's house. Every weekday in warmer weather, this woman -- I think she may be jewish orthodox, as she is always dressed in long skirts with her head covered -- marches up and down this street for a half-hour. I think it is her exercise regimen, but why doesn't she walk along the beautiful tree-lined boulevard like everyone else (only 2 blocks away)?

Last Sunday, when my mate and I were waiting for a locksmith to arrive so that we could move my possessions into my new place, we were suddenly aware of this guy in combats cycling around the block very fast. Suddenly, he turned on us and said "Oi! If you've got summat to say to me, say it to my face!" and when on and on along these lines for a couple of minutes. We just stood there in silence as he was a bulky chap and we really thought he might deck us. he was wearing a Hannibal Lecter style mask and dark glasses. He eventually left us alone and knowing that we had a one and a half hour wait for the locksmith to arrive as he was stuck in roadworks on the A40, we decided to drive to my mate's house and have some coffee. As we driving down my road I noticed the guy who'd harangued us harrassing a group of kids. We drove in silence as we quite shaken by the incident, but by the time we got to my mate's house we were able to joke about it, speculating that the guy in the mask probably had a collection of guns and liked to draw violent comic strips which he NEVER SHOWED TO ANYONE. We also had fun thinking up the worst possible thing we could have said in response to the guy, for example I suggested "Only got a push bike? You pussy! Get yrself a motorbike!"
