Hotels in NYC?

When I went three of us shared a flat we found in Loot, UK free ads paper, weird basement flat with insane heating, owned by a profeshional prankster who wanted part payment in cuban cigars. $60 a night which split three ways was very economical. OK it was 96th two blocks west of broadway so not in the thick of things, but next to the red line express subway stop. Had bonkers heating, the bathroom was on the other side of the hall and a doorman called Eddie. You get the feeling that all newyork doormen should be called Eddie.

I will point out that you probably don't want to bother unless you've got cash burning in your pocket though. It's not Ritz level but it's not cheap.

I'm liking Kate's suggestion, though. I'd do my own research, but you guys are doing such a bang-up job. I'd thank y'all profusely, but I don't want to sound obsequious. (Though using "obsequious" makes me sound prententious.) (Ah, I should've saved this material for another post.)

Otherwise, I stayed at the Iroquois. Every R&R biog book I have read has the band staying there. James Dean, The Clash, Andrew Loog Oldham, etc.... but the most memorable quote was Mick Jones "What is this shithole" and Tony Wilson from the Factory Records book "the shithole next to the Algonquin".

It aint as bad as that.. (Apart from the Last Room available which has the boiler in it, which in return for using we got a concessionary rate on a decent room in the hotel).

friend of mine strongly recommends the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott - anyone second that or have other suggestions? how cheap does it get? budget's getting tighter i think...

whoa... that's some splurge. but yeah, the soho and tribeca grands aren't really all that nice or worth the pricetags. the rooms at the tribeca are tiny, but they come with DFA cds....

The place is a dump. The rooms are tiny (about the size of a closet), don't have AC, and the TVs rarely get proper reception. The shared showers / toilets are filthy, and the staff is rude. Aside from being a rundown hangout for transvestite prostitutes and drug users, it is also used as an S.R.O. hotel by the city to place homeless people. There is little security, no room service, and a rarely working elevator. Safety and health are questionable. AVOID THIS HOTEL! Just pay an extra 20 bucks a night for a real hotel, it will be worth it.

BTW if you don't want the luxury of the Hyatt, there's a cheaper hotel in Jersey City - I think the Marriott Courtyard, that's spitting distance from the Pavonia PATH train (the one right across the water from NYC)

i can't remember the name of the place i stayed last time i stayed in manhattan, it was fairly cheap, had my own bathroom and was within walking distance of the bowery ballroom.

i still say priceline is best bet cause you choose stars in addition to price. i once got a nice room at hilton for like $100 during a holiday weekend.

lol i've been to that rooftop bar. no way in hell am i even looking up the prices of that place.

the ludlow beside katz's deli is really nice, expensive tho. i mean nyc is weird, the rates seem to fluctuate wildly and the times of year it's cheap/expensive are surprising. i've seen the holiday inn clocking in at more than fairly upmarket places on occasion.

afaik as a fairly regular visitor airbnb is p much dead in nyc. i stopped using it a few years ago after some property inspector came and hammered eviction notices on the door every day, the place wasn't particularly nice either, and i got older and my circumstances improved. it seems to me it had all become dodgy/shark types on airbnb after that.

it's a shame as the first time i visited nyc as an adult, about 6/7 years ago, i stayed in an ensuite room in williamsburg on grand st for about 60 pounds a night. it was shared with the host but he left the downstairs entirely to visitors and was away for most of my stay anyway. think those days are gone, though i've had good experiences with airbnb recently in remote european towns, somebody renting out their mom's apartment, picking you up at the station, recommending restaurants etc. but mostly whatever human spirit made airbnb quite fun and fresh is gone i think.

I think the prices are jacked up now but there were a few decent rates at usually pricey hotels a while back with the "one night" app, probably a different one than caek is mentioning. I ended up at the east village location of The Standard for a decent price. The caveat being the ability to book a room goes live at 3pm or so for that night

looks like they've changed it so you can book at noon, but given the list of hotels on there, probably fewer deals unless you're heading to nyc in the winter season

oh, this is for the march thing in gpoint? ( I will be missing it). The last time I had to book hotels for family I ended up just doing Fairfield Inn in Astoria/near LGA. which is totally fine and normal priced. It's kind of in a dead spot but they have a free shuttle to LGA, the Astoria Blvd stop and free parking. Everything in ny got soooo pricey. From there you can still walk to steinway etc or use the saved money to carservice it.

oh and this worked for me since I had moved to astoria, maybe some of the other fairfield inns in the city will be normal priced too.

the ace rooms were ok-ish but the lobby is apparently an coworking space. if you're just passing through there, it's fine, but the ability to enjoy the lobby is a nice thing for me when the rooms are intentionally smaller and every damn seat was taken all day

fwiw a couple years ago when I was there I stayed at the midtown hilton, the east village standard, and the ace midtown if you end up wondering about anything in those areas

this is fucking crazy, all these places are like $200-300+ per night

the last-minute hotel app thing caek mentioned has rooms for like 90

yeah the ones you're listing are not cheap?

think I checked out this thread a couple years ago before I booked travel (and used email promos, etc) and a couple of the old favorites have been remodeled into boutiques now

Ppl in my neighborhood seem to still Air bnb regularly but in their own homes which probably puts them safely within the requirements. Still, I see a TON of European tourists in Bed-Stuy all the time.

Hotel tonight started out only offering bookings in the next seven days and that’s all I ever used it for, but it offers further out now. It’s using the same data feed as kayak and Expedia and whatever. It’s just a nicer app and more “curated” list.

I had an email with a hotel deal and was considering booking a few days in early April, with the idea that if my workplace comes through and pays for me to go to a conference I'd get my stay reimbursed. if not, I just use it for my own vacation

but the prices went up to the point where I'm not going to do that. crossing my fingers for the conference!

the *conference rate* for the recommended hotel is $329/night lol

heeey I'm going to that conference! going to probably get one of the day-of deals on fri/say after it (and will be back here looking for ideas), but will be staying at the conference hotel the rest of the week

I'm traveling to a few other cities soon and I've been agonizing over where to stay, what neighborhood, hotel v Air bnb, etc, and now when I walk through the streets of New York I'm like, you know, I don't blame people for wanting to stay in Bed-Stuy for the same reasons that I love living there--it's quiet, it's scenic, it's on a good train line. And these days there are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants and boutiques and local businesses to enjoy.

mh, give me your dates and I'll see what I can free up! I go out of town a lot now but let's see.

I'm in town April 1 - 7, with activities on the 2nd through 5th. I'm guessing I'll be free evenings on the 3rd/4th/5th and just bumming around town until my flight leaves the evening of the 7th

oh yeah, the relevant detail: I'll be staying in Chelsea. Probably the opposite side of the world for most people around the area, but.. when work's footing the bill..

Second floor but otherwise yes! Eight and a half years now iirc. You could come over again, I'll be home this weekend and I think next weekend too.

Oh but when I used to throw myself birthday parties my downstairs neighbor would let me use her apartment because it has access to the patio. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Love staying at the Jane, with one exception it’s the only place I’ve stayed when taking myself to New York. Thinking about hotels today for no evident reason. Maybe I’ll travel again someday! What a concept.

any good new options or suggestions? looking at coming up with the 13-year-old, so need two beds. going to be doing a bunch of tourist shit but staying right in downtown manhattan seems potentially overwhelming. should i be looking in the village? chelsea? brooklyn? i realize these are annoying questions but i am dumb about nyc, sorry

the jane looks really cool but the rooms are so small and it looks like all their public spaces are under renovation. also wonder if the teen could deal with communal bathrooms lol.

if you can find a generic business hotel in the financial district in your budget then that is what I usually recommend, good transit links and if you're coming at the weekend then it's relatively quiet and cheap. hotels further north in Manhattan tend to cost more, and midtown is a bit intense.

the Hampton inn downtown Brooklyn is reliable and fine with kids if you just need somewhere to sleep and eat breakfast and get on the subway. otherwise the downtown Brooklyn hotels are on the expensive side. bizarrely more expensive than the equivalent hotel in Manhattan.

I've stayed at the Evelyn (was the Gershwin) in nomad. not an especially pretty neighborhood, but fine and may be more conveniently located than the financial district. a bit more expensive than the jane.

also the app hotel tonight is good, although they don't make it easy to find double rooms.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Chelsea last year when we took our 12 year-old to NYC. Picked that one because it was halfway between Financial District (where my wife had to work a couple days) and all the touristy shit we wanted to do. Worked perfectly for a place to sleep and grab a quick breakfast in the morning before heading out for the day.

Hampton inn (as a chain) will also guarantee connecting rooms if you request those at booking, which is why we often end up there.

There are buckets of new hotels in bk from the ace at the high end to the Even (???) at the low end; close to the blue green red n orange lines so u can get to whatever side of manhattan u want.

There is something to staying in a midtown hotel if it’s ur kids’ first time in the city. Concrete bunghole and whatnot

There's an Air B&B hotel (it's a hotel, but all bookings are handled by Air B&B) in the Lower East Side called "Untitled at 3 Freeman Alley" that's actually very reasonably priced. It's about a two block walk away from the 2nd Ave. station on the F.

everyone who lives here recommends staying in hotels in Brooklyn to save money, which makes sense, but I don't know if they realize that downtown brooklyn/williamsburg hotels are no cheaper and often more expensive than the Manhattan equivalents.

eh, I haven't been since 2019 but unless you're doing something late night/early morning and don't want to limp back to a hotel, staying in Manhattan and bouncing over to Brooklyn for the day wasn't that inconvenient

Not cheap (but not uber-expensive either) is the Maritime Hotel. Good location (Meatpacking District, w. 16th St.), cozy lobby to lounge in plus neat round windows in each room.

The Andaz Bryant Park, across the street from the NY Public Library, may be pricier but would be a good home base and is a really cool hotel.

Archer and The Refinery are also both in the garment district (just south of Times Square), so you have the midtown home base for getting around but on streets that aren't hectic.

Doubletree Financial District was totally fine, reasonably priced.

Stayed here this past summer, thought it was good and very um contemporary Brooklyn. Same group owns other Brooklyn hotels
