apple + Q

amon (eman), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

i deleted it as a bookmark so that i would be forced to type the URL in every time.

bookmark usually gets re-instated after about 4 hours...

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Put

127.0.0.1 p3r.net
127.0.0.1 wh3r.net

in your HOSTS file?

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I suppose I could actually ask our sys admin to block it from me, but I think that would just raise too many questions about how much time I spent on it and what I was doing it in the first place. :-/

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I dunno about Firefox, but IE allows you to add sites of your choice on a "restricted" list (found in security options).

Alternatively use hammer on comp.

I just did that and I'm still here. All it did was get rid of my registration details.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

download the adblock extension (a good idea on its own) and mark the above domains as ads site?

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

ahh! a sensible answer.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

doesn't work.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

How about we just abuse you mercilessly if you post anything, douchebag?

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

that certainly doesn't work, either.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

StanM has the quickest solution.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

if only ILX was presented in Flash.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

I have just seen a nightmarish vision of the future!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

what is a HOSTS file?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Are you on Apple or Windows, cutty?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

APPLES

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

What about if somebody posts huge NSFW images on all the threads?

Oh, hang on.

Le Marquis de Salade (noodle vague), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Open up a terminal, then

'sudo vi /etc/hosts'

Add the lines

'127.0.0.1 ilx.p3r.net'
'127.0.0.1 ilx.wh3rd.net'

This will cause ilx.*.net to point back to your own machine.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

that seems dangerous in the long run

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

In what way?

When you want to see ILX again, just comment out (i.e. add '#' to the start of the line) the two lines. Or remove them.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

the adblock thing works if you click the 'Site Blocking' option in adblock preferences (otherwise it only blocks scripts, images etc, not plain html)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

you can't

hostile java crips (dr g), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

dr g is right

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

the host file thing would work

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

slash your forearm with a razor each time you log in to ilx.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

uninstall firefox. install netscape navigator.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i can't edit my hosts

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

i mean, it won't let me add anything to the file

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Why don't you just go on the moderator board and ask them to ban you?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

ha, because this is a temporary thing

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

So were previous bans done by people who requested being banned!

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

ahhhhh i see

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to block myself from seeing ilm, but not ile. is there an easy way to do this in firefox/greasemonkey? i guess i'd settle for blocking the new qs/answers urls, if blocking all threads is impossible.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 13 May 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

you can't

i changed the permissions on the hosts file but it doesn't seem to take and i still can't save the changes. any advice?

jed_, Friday, 31 October 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

try: lookupd -flushcache

horrible (harbl), Friday, 31 October 2008 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

thanks, what does that mean?

jed_, Friday, 31 October 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

oh, after you exit the hosts file type that. then try reloading. wait are you using leopard?

horrible (harbl), Friday, 31 October 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

yep, i rebooted and still i can't save the changes to hosts.

jed_, Friday, 31 October 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

i mean that, when i try to close and save hosts it says that don't have the appropriate access privileges even though i changed the permissions for that file.

horrible: that is one awesome ASCII charcter, I’m nicking that!

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 31 October 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

One of my roommates uses Leechblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4476) to limit the number of hours he can be a political junkie. When he's been on those websites too long, firefox says, "Not-Roommate: Leechblock has blocked these sites. Use Safari. Roommate: Your time is up. Get something done."

Maria, Friday, 31 October 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

ten months pass...

^^^^^ this works great for blocking a certain site I'm trying to avoid when I'm at work.

But is there anything like a Safari plug-in to do the same thing?

I Like Daydreams, I've Had Enough Reality (Masonic Boom), Friday, 25 September 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

But is there anything like a Safari plug-in to do the same thing?

Modifying the hosts file is completely surefire. See: http://www.dreamlight.com/insights/bugs/Apple/lookupd.html#adsonar

Not quite the same as a plug-in, but will block the site from anything on the machine attempting to connect.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 September 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

I got it, thank you so much.

Will keep the site bookmarked for those moments when my self control is on the loooww.
