What time of year?

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

i dunno yet, it depends, leaving it open for now

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Return to LA, sir. (Arthur was saying this the other day.)

Well, go through the South in the winter or through the North in the Summer. I-70 across the center of the US seems like it would be boring, most of the way.

NY->Pittsburgh->Chicago->Minneapolis->Black Hills->Seattle->West Coast
CA->Phoenix->Dallas->Atlanta->East Coast

i want to do a great lakes thing, myself. it may happen soon.

If you're going on the bus, it helps to have a shiv and your own supply of toilet paper.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

you want to see lots of interstate? why not the train?

haha, green tortoise. i spent 2 hours in their hostel in sf once.

i think april/may would be nice, and i'm also thinking about a winnipeg-LA type deal

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I dont know why anyone would put Oklahoma City on a list of things "to do"...

Spink, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah especially when chicago's not on the list!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

But does Chicago have the Muscle Car Ranch? No.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Steve's list might make sense as dots on a line, but as destinations, these seem in need of serious rethinking (which isn't to say they aren't near interesting things or contain interesting people):

Kansas City
Knoxville
Boise
Cheyenne
Amarillo
Baton Rouge
Tallahassee

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Go to the wig museum.

Spink, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i've done Chicago already (not that i wouldn't go there again, but it never strikes me as convenient for the sort of coast to coast trip i'd want)

as for the other less obvious places, they're not so much cities i want to visit, more like just co-ordinate points on the road map, logical places to stop etc.

but if they're NOT not interesting or have interesting people, why would you not want to visit them?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

i meant that they might be close to interesting things, but aren't so interesting in themselves, or, you could justify going to them if you were visiting someone

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

great lakes thing

I can't let go of my dream of circumventing Lake Michigan. In the hot, hot days of summer, it takes some restraint to not just hop in the truck and drive to the U.P. If I get bored as I'm coming back south through the mitten, I can always jump onto the SS badger!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

circumnavigating lakes, now theres a thought! i'd like to start a thread on that, though i have a feeling it would generate comedy responses only.

shall i try it anyway? yes, why not

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

it might be fun.. then again, I thought going between the greatlakes on 401 from Detroit to Toronto would be a fun drive.

ugh. most fucking horrible drive ever. when the flying J at london, on is an oasis of fun, you know you're not maximizin' good times. (especially in the middle of a snowstorm.)

do knut (donut), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Cleveland!!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Lincoln, Nebraska!

I have done two coast-to-coast trips.

One was Amtrak - NYC-Niagara-NYC-Chicago-New Orleans-Memphis-El Paso-LA-Santa Barbara-Las Vegas-San Francisco. I liked this one, but not much in the way of small off-the-beaten-path stuff, I suppose. But you can't really go wrong with America.

The other was Greyhound - Las Vegas-Santa Barbara-Santa Cruz-San Francisco-Reno-Salt Lake-Cheyenne-Omaha-Des Moines-Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinatti-Phuladelphia-NYC. Then I flew to DC and drove down the East Coast DC-Richmond-Raleigh-Wilmington-Myrtle Beach-Charleston-Savannah-down trhough Florida to Miami.

That was a good one.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to do Pacific Northwest/British Columbia/Montana/The Dakotas, or a big Southwest trip next.

I suppose New England is my other big blind spot, but it's never really appealed. Maybe Vermont.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm also thinking about crawling on all fours across the Yorkshire Dales.

What kind of socks does one wear for that?

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

vermont i like a lot

im not a fan of the north yorkshire dales, they are a bit wax jacket and wellies. the pennines of west yorks, along the border with lancs, is another matter. they dont mind what socks you where, when you're lost on saddleworth moor

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to have a lot more questions for you about this, I feel.

obv the crawling on all fours thing was bullshit

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Also "wax jacket and wellies", I can't see what's wrong with this.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

you're greyhound trip was very 'I-80'. been to a few places on that list, would be nice to link them though.

the dakotas, nebraska, kansas, oklahoma appeal. it must be my inner stephen shore.

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

wax jackets and wellies?

have you never heard of class war, man?

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

well, you can go for places that are slow to change, but I'm not sure 00s South Dakota = 70s California

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Nebraska was a definite highlight. Even for an agnostic Jew, I felt like I was permitted to lay momentarily in the lap of an irascible Old Testament god.

xxp - oh, I'm beginning to understand now. Class war.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking in aesthetics rather than symbols.
